frustrating. the more I try to get the textures and lightning right the worse everything gets. maybe best to put this on hold for a week and come back with a fresh mind….

I wish I was better with photoshop, so I wouldn't have to worry that much about getting everything out of the renderer as realistic as possible.

      Same question?

Also on mac ML with Sketchup 2013. BZ tools crash every time.

I went through all the suggestion in this and the plugin thread and unfortunately nothing helped.

Here some pics of the model mesh. And they come with some questions on top 😄

In the last image you can see the tapered and rounded structure under the main shell (that is the drone workshop in the movie I believe). I played around texturing that shape yesterday and pulled my hair out. Trupaint, SketchUV nothing seems to work on that kind of shape. Please don't say it's impossible in SU. Any ideas on this are welcome.

And more generally asking about texturing. With all the textures in place and materials roughly designed for thea render, what would you guys think is the most effective way of getting the wear on edges and rust into the models structure. I fear you'll say PS compositing 😄

you guessed it UV texturing and texturing are my absolute killer skills - that's why I make such a good team with SU 😆

Great looking model, did you model based on what you saw in the movie or did you find additional resources?

That home was it hovering in sky? I ask because the same home in the other zone (in movie) was perched above a mountain.

Now time to add the bubble plane.

I made screenshots from the movie. no other resources. the home is not really hovering in the sky, it is connected to the groud/sea with a telescope like pole. (see image). I still have to model that part.

either way a majority of the structure wouldn't work outside a scifi plot -> overhanging landing area for example. one has to assume that advanced anti-gravity technology is used here 😄

not sure i will do the bubble plane. let's see…

That's impressive, crap movie but I like the model, well done

Why was it a crap movie? I enjoyed it, great twist. Not many bad Cruise movies.

      well, i didn't like it either 😄

beautiful cinematography, but the story was pretty thin IMO. but then again, maybe it's because I don't like Tom Cruise that much (his acting, never met him in person)

    • Sky Tower (Oblivion Movie) - WIP

      Hello guys!

I lately saw the movie Oblivion which was - well, let's say not my favorite, but I thought those "Sky Tower" apartments floating in the sky were quite cool. here's a preview of my reconstruction.

I modeled everything within Sketchup. Scene is rendered in Thea SU (TR2) with physical sky as I'm still struggling to get the IBL right. Hence reflections look pretty flat for the moment.

This is WIP. There is a lot of work to do still. Texturing is missing nearly completely, lightning is in a raw draft and there are also things missing in the model as well. As I didn't have any blueprints this was done only by eye from various images, the scale is surely a little bit off the original.

More views and renders to come soon. Feedback and recommendations are welcome.

    • RE: Animation Export Problem

i just tried a workaround with the trial version of the new keyframe animation plugin. though its intended for object animations it has a tween feature that automatically creates all the transition frames between scenes in a separate file with a specified framrate.

after creating the new file with all the tweened frames i exported the file again as an animation with transition and delay set to zero, which the plugin also does automatically.

sensational result: the animation export to png with imagesize set to full screen resolution took only 15min at 25fps. the creation of the tweens went nearly instant.

this is great, i think i will invest into this nice plugin. only downside, the tweening process ignored hidden objects in some scenes. i will have to see if i can find out why...

    • RE: Animation Export Problem

      thanks for your reply

i feared that this is how it is 😉
i have no shadows turned on but need to have the sketchy edges exported. seems like i have to accept the long export times.

i have one one more suspicion though. as there are a lot of 2d faceme components in there i get the feeling that when the camera passes a 2d component in a way that it has to turn around its axis to stay faced to the camera the export of these "turning-frames" are the ones that take forever to export.

i will investigate that behavior and report back if i can find something significant.

      again, thanks for your help!!!

    • Animation Export Problem

      hello everybody!

i´m trying to export scene animations with sketchup8(osx) and run into some problems concerning the speed of the export.

the scene consists of mainly 2d face-me billboards (about 10-20) and some basic 3d models. i made something around 10-15 scenes with individual transition and delays. only the camera is moving. style is set to one of the built-in sketchy edges defaults.

although this model is very small the export of the animation (jpg, png or avi doesn´t make a difference) takes more than 5 hours (image size of export makes no big difference aswell). depending on the fps settings i talk about 88 to 200 frames. strange thing is that some frames render quite quickly as you would expect it and others take up to 60mins. i even investigated those frames but couldn´t find anything suspicious that could cause the slow export.

if anyone has an idea on what makes my export sooo slow or knows any tweaks/tricks, please let me know!?!
i know that sketchy edges rendering slows down the export, but this seems to be a little too extreme to be explained just with the rendering style, isn´t it?

thx for your help in advance!!!1

      I beg your pardon! - OBSESSED ? 😮

I rather prefer "enamored," if you don't mind.

( "Smitten," "enchanted," "infatuated" or "enraptured" will also do )

      ~Taff

It's been 40+ years of fascination with the geometry & mathematical derivation of the elements of geodesic domes, which used to be closely-guarded proprietary information.

haha! ok i will keep that in mind. whatever your "relationship" with these is - this is simply great and fascinating work

    • Need help finding example animations

      hello together!

i hope this is the right place to post this request?

i´m working on a project that i need some example animations to show a specific idea to a customer. as this is in very early stage i hoped i could find something that fits without having to animate/scribble it myself.

      what i´m looking for:

animations/graphics that show houses/buildings/cities/bridges or other architectural objects that organically "grow" like plants, grass or ivy. i tried youtube/vimeo and the likes but couldn´t find anything suitable. the project is about environmental architecture and the final goals is to show the customers projects grow and melt with the environment in an emotional animation.

so if someone has done/seen something similar and could point me to some examples that would be very helpful.

      thx in advance

    • RE: SUMMER GARDEN

this is a nice model. nevertheless i believe that you could add more realism to the scene with just a few improvements with the materials. especially the window frames material looks too diffuse IMO. another thing that popped into my eye (maybe i´m mistaken) is the scale of the outdoor furniture. it somehow looks bigger than it should be. possible?

the DOF and plants are already well done so there´s not a lot missing to make this a perfect archviz!

IMO this is great modeling and even if it´s a quite rectangular car i´m quite impressed by the detail you´ve put into this baby. i also like that you shared your workflow.

i´ve never been too much into automotive modeling but this makes me think about a giving it a go one day.
