Sky Tower (Oblivion Movie) - WIP

Great looking model, did you model based on what you saw in the movie or did you find additional resources?
That home was it hovering in sky? I ask because the same home in the other zone (in movie) was perched above a mountain.
Now time to add the bubble plane.
I made screenshots from the movie. no other resources. the home is not really hovering in the sky, it is connected to the groud/sea with a telescope like pole. (see image). I still have to model that part.
either way a majority of the structure wouldn't work outside a scifi plot -> overhanging landing area for example. one has to assume that advanced anti-gravity technology is used here
not sure i will do the bubble plane. let's see…

well, i didn't like it either
beautiful cinematography, but the story was pretty thin IMO. but then again, maybe it's because I don't like Tom Cruise that much (his acting, never met him in person)
It was a beautiful looking movie, I actually do not mind Cruise, he has acted in many great movies IMO. I did enjoy the movie as it had all the elements of a good scifi and even with a good twist. The criticism I heard was the movie somehow projects a Scientology agenda, It was lost on me as I have no idea what those folks are about nor do I care.
This weekend I'm going to see Elysium, this I believe will be better.

I think the only problem Tom Cruise has is he is too recognisable, like John Wayne. Like the renders and the model, very cool.

Not many bad Cruise movies.
agree.. the guy may be iffy irl but generally doesn't pick bad scripts.
-
I enjoyed the movie, I typically enjoy cruise's acting because he puts his all into a part. personally, he's bat$#!t crazy... I too was inspired by the house and started my own cloud house... Haven't gotten very far on it. Yours looks great.

Here some pics of the model mesh. And they come with some questions on top
In the last image you can see the tapered and rounded structure under the main shell (that is the drone workshop in the movie I believe). I played around texturing that shape yesterday and pulled my hair out. Trupaint, SketchUV nothing seems to work on that kind of shape. Please don't say it's impossible in SU. Any ideas on this are welcome.
And more generally asking about texturing. With all the textures in place and materials roughly designed for thea render, what would you guys think is the most effective way of getting the wear on edges and rust into the models structure. I fear you'll say PS compositing
you guessed it UV texturing and texturing are my absolute killer skills - that's why I make such a good team with SU
-
wow... great modeling. very efficient.
-
Verry niice !
-
What they say^^^^. Impressive!
-
…with the missing geometry added. now comes the compositing part...
-
Really nice, can't wait to see the finished model with texture
-
Tom Cruise had to marry an Australian to become famous....
....oh, hang on, it was the other way around wasn't it...??!!
-
Great model. You need some naked people swimming I liked this movie. Good sf story on many levels. I bet the ending was not original. Without it would be the way better (less is more). Beautiful 3d and photography. Tom was good too, as always. His wife was not.

frustrating. the more I try to get the textures and lightning right the worse everything gets. maybe best to put this on hold for a week and come back with a fresh mind….
I wish I was better with photoshop, so I wouldn't have to worry that much about getting everything out of the renderer as realistic as possible.
-
a first shot from the inside. due to bad render results, rather artistic than photorealistic.
-
This is highly impressive, I'd like to try that out in a game engine and explore it, looking forward to more updates

Or share the model so the guys here can play with various render engines and see what they can achieve.

I can surely do that, if people want to. So you can see my sloppy modeling on some parts
Would love to see what some render experts can get out of it. Maybe a render that challengeQuestions:
- Where would I share the 50MB+ file. I don't have a filesharing account? (wetransfer probably?)
- How would you like me to share the file. Cleared from all the materials/textures or with them?
I can also share some movie screenshots and images for reference with the model.
@iichiversii: I think those game engines are really an interesting alternative to static still renderings nowadays. Could you recommend one for mac? (Unity, UDK etc.) Is this somehow straight forward to get results with them or is there a lot of coding involved?

Dropbox, here: http://db.tt/SFTUykI
Get free dropbox space, and you can upload model and materials, reference images, just zip and upload, post link.
-
dropbox sure!!!
I do have that. knot in my brain. I'll go over the model and rename materials definitions and group names so the structure is easier to understand in english and post it soon.
