    • RE: SketchUp 2018 - first impressions

Just downloaded and opened a couple of small files (what I consider to be small). One I did a "save as" to keep my older 2017 file intact, the other, a 26 MB file, I went to save in 2018 format, figuring it'd be easy enough to resave as the 2017 version, and... spinning beach ball! (MacOS).

      Had to force quit.

      Disappointed barely scratches the surface.

I found 2017 to be very unstable and slow (20+ seconds to save a 140 MB file on an SSD? I can duplicate one that size in about 3). 2018 show no early signs of improvement. Which was all I had really hoped for - A STABLE APPLICATION. Most of the upgrades they tout were available already as darn good plugins.

WTH, Trimble? I really think its time to find an alternative... Ideas, anyone?

I just downloaded / installed SU 2018. As is usual, my SpaceMouse didn't work. Usually, as in every time before, downloading and installing the latest 3D Connexion driver solves this. It didn't this time. Space Mouse no work.

Anyone else encounter this and come up with a solution? I have emailed 3DC support, not sure how long that will take.

      I'm on MacOS Sierra.

    • "locking" layout viewports

Seems there always more to learn... hoping the knowledgeable crew here can help!

For starters, I recognize that the accepted method of importing particular Sketchup views to Layout is to create a scene in SU then reference that scene in LO. And, in many instances this works quite well and I make use of it in many situations.

However! Since SU does not have any hierarchal structure to the scene window or scene creation with which to organize scenes into discrete "groups" (or the layers window, for that matter), creating a scene for every possible view of a model that one might want to reference in LO becomes pretty unwieldy when one approaches 50 or 100 scenes. Certainly, there are scenes in any given model that one would like to be able to return to, but many of the views into a model, for me anyway, are "one of's" where I simply need to have that view to annotate using LO, and then never have a need to return to it. To do this, I have been using the "send to layout" button, where a new LO file will open, I fine tune the orientation, usually select "hybrid" render option, then copy/paste that view into a different layout document where I do the annotation, creating a "detail" sheet of annotated views. The purpose of this is to document issues with the particular project for reference by the site construction team (I use SU to model custom home structures and MEPS assemblies for contractors).

All well and good, unless and until I find something in the model that needs modification (move a structural element, for example). Then, if I make the mistake of "updating" the model reference in LO (it will prompt for that), everything goes awry with my previously annotated views. Luckily, in the instance that prompted this topic, I did not save LO and was able to revert to "Last saved" and so did not lose hours of the previous day's work. But, it would seem, to me anyway, that a right click on a viewport in LO should bring up an additional option to "delete reference to model", or "freeze model reference" or something similar, so that a save in SU does not translate to a jumbled viewport in LO, if model reference is updated.

I suppose one work around would be to use a screen shot of the SU model at the particular view, then bring that PNG image into LO for annotation, but I lose that fine tune ability of the view orientation.

Any enlightenment from the SU masters here would be greatly appreciated! As I continue my never ending education...

      Thanks to all!

    • RE: Problems after changing drawing axis

I use the axis tool and align it with a wall corner on the plan. So, on the cabinet wall, I can take the tape measure tool and search for a corner of a cabinet door for a reference point from which to measure and it doesn't find a corner to reference. You didn't encounter this? Are you on a PC or Mac? I'm on a Mac

    • Problems after changing drawing axis

I have a recurring issue perhaps someone can shed some light on

the project I'm modeling has a wing of the residence spun off at approx 63.4Β° to everything else. I change the drawing axis to match when I'm modeling objects in this wing to facilitate. But my objects behave strangely when drawn - they're difficult to select, to snap to, to drag a construction line from etc etc. Its like everything is created ever so slightly skewed from this odd angle axis. This has been a recurring issue, so I have become extremely careful about pulling construction guides and using the arrow keys to lock tools to a plane. And yet, I continue to have this issue. I keep trying different approaches to the objects I'm modeling, but it continues to happen as I get into the details of the modeled objects. Any way to keep SU on the "straight and narrow", so to speak?

The model is at close to 70 megs, so here's a DB link if anyone is inclined to take a look.

      Thanks!

    • Sharing model with client

      Hello everyone

I want to share a model with my client. They're not really the end user, but they did commission it for the builder's use and he wants to be able to "play" with it. I'm trying to figure out how to give him the file to open in a template that would have just the viewing tools in the toolbar at the top - orbit, pan, zoom, tape measure and maybe section tools. I basically want to "hide" the drawing and move tools from the toolbar of the file I send him so he can't get into too much trouble navigating through the model. SU Viewer would be a good option if it only allowed the ability to control layer visibility. But, it doesn't. In addition, I have the cross over challenges (if any) from my system on a Mac to his Windows.

Any ideas or suggestions are very much appreciated.

      Thanks!

Apparently, there is some conflict in the plug in. Just learned that this morning. Apparently, they're (3Skeng) waiting on info / analysis from the SU team at Trimble.

So, when do we get "D'oh" version 2, Rich?! Great little guide, was very happy to get that a the last confab in Steamboat.

Does it crash if you disable it?

125MB is not so large but if you have a style enabled that draws on GPU resources it could chug a bit.

    • RE: 2017 crashes constantly

I'm one update behind on Mac OS Sierra. I could try updating that, see if anything changes.

Another odd behavior has surfaced this morning

I am working on a "wing" of the house that is rotated at 63.4 degrees to the rest of the structure. So, I have temporarily rotated the drawing axis to facilitate. I'm having a devil of a time drawing rectangular objects to this new axis orientation. I need to draw the walls surrounding the room, and I keep trying different approaches but they are all "breaking down", as in, becoming problematic "solids". Right now, I'm trying to use the "outer shell" tool to just join different segments of the walls I've drawn. I select one particular wall and I get a volume in the relevant box on the entity info window. ThomThom's solid inspector shows it as a solid as well. Yet, when I go to perform the outer shell operation, the tool tip on this wall object says "not a solid"! What in the world??

Phew, thanks, Dave. Its at least comforting that you, and the rest of the group here weighing in, are out there somewhere in the night helping me to remain sane! Haha

Yea, apparently there is an issue in 2017 with 3Skeng causing crashing in app. I just learned that this morning from Hans over at 3Skeng. That plugin is such a huge part of my workflow that I can't see working with out it. Maybe I just go back to 2016, not near as many issues there.

... and the used plugins. For evaluating this try if disabling them one-by-one at "SketchUp > Extension Manager" fixes the crashes and identifies the causing plug:

    • 2017 crashes constantly

Help! I am working on a MacBook Pro circa mid 2014. 16 gigs RAM; 256 SSD. I am running SU Pro 2107. The main ruby I have is the 3Skeng modules. IT CRASHES CONSTANTLY! As in a half dozen or more times a day. The file I'm working on is about 125 megs. I save after just about every move I make, and that takes about 20 seconds each time. I just did a complete delete and re install of SU this morning, incl files in app support and preferences and it continues to happen. I'm beginning to think that SU is not up to the task of complex modeling, but am very hesitant to buy a PC and try to make the move to Revit (who knows how that behaves?).

Does anyone else have this issue? Any solutions?

      Frustrating...

      Thanks for any advice.

    • RE: Wish list for Sketchup 2018

I may have posted this request before, but I'd really like the ability to "Lock" an object yet still be able to hide it. Locking should keep me from moving it, deleting it, changing any attribute - except visibility. I understand that layers are the main way that SU handles visibility, but my models have well over 100 layers now and if I was to create a layer for every single entity that I may want to randomly and temporarily remove from view (blocking something I'm looking at / modeling), I'd have thousands of layers. As it is, I must either unlock / lock an object every time its in the way of modeling something else, or risk moving it inadvertently and not discovering that until who knows when and after who knows how many objects have been modeled based on it. Which happens too often.

Another request, I often create a group or component, move to a layer, then hit the "m" key to move the object into place. Except I just created a layer "m" instead. I can't tell you how often I do that each and every day. In order to make that work flow work, I have to deselect my object, then reselect it! Find a way to make that work better, please, such as requiring that I actually hit the "+" in the layer window.

Another request, if anyone from Trimble watches this forum, some awareness in the program about where current modeling is taking place - as in, I often start to model something (usually piping or ductwork diagram with 3Skeng tools) in close and in perspective 3D. I then go to top view parallel so I can see my end point. I find that I have to scroll waaaay out and then back in on my modeling location. To have the top view / parallel automatically be over where I last was in the model would be superb!

Whew, glad to get those off my chest.

    • RE: Scene tabs

Haha, yea, don't even try to talk to me before coffee!

I had not noticed the scene tabs toggle in the view menu - I kept thinking it had to be in the scene manager window. Thanks for that input (and WoDan too).

I could use the ability to group related scenes together, outline style. In my models, I have the desire / need to make different presentations for different situations, all from the same model; there may be a particular set of scenes for a discussion with a client, a different set of scenes for a marketing presentation, perhaps yet another set specifically set up for presentation / discussion with a particular trade. I could easily specify a hundred or more scenes in my models, with sets of 10-20, or whatever, relevant to a particular discussion to be had in a particular presentation. But, trying to keep track of and manage that many scenes from the flat structure of scenes in the scene manager window is very unwieldy. I suppose I could make copies of the model file and then do particular sets of scenes for each particular presentation, but what would I do as I continue to develop the model? Throw all the previous work away done with scenes for presentations and start over with each one? It just seems like a natural use of the scene capability.

Like I say, if that's possible from a ruby script programming plug in, I'd probably pay someone to do that. But, I'm no programmer for sure.

      Just my 2Β’.

      Bob

by the way, heres a dropbox link to one of my model files, just to illustrate. You can see that cliff face in there that you did for me. The layer name is GRADE excavation new.

Bob, I did something a little different from TIG's method. First, I delete the everything but the cliff terrain group and then I converted it to a component for a bit of CYA protection. Next, I opened the component for editing and drew a large rectangle below the terrain geometry. I used the Project lines perpendicular to face in the Projections tools (from the SCF Extension Store) to project the perimeter of the terrain down onto the rectangle. When prompted to make faces, I chose 'Yes". Then I deleted edges of the rectangle. When I closed it and checked, the component showed as solid. I have had cases with the projection thing when it doesn't split the rectangle into regions inside and outside the projected edge. If that happens, deleting the edges of the rectangle will leave the bottom of the terrain shape open. Just trace one of the edge segments with the Line tool to heal the face.

Note that there was nothing exploded and so no need to worry about layer associations if there'd been any layer associations.
