    • RE: Pdf export scale is incorrect

Steps for successful PDF (or EPS or DWG) export to scale:

      1. Select Parallel projection (Camera menu)
      2. Select one of the standard views (Camera menu or toolbar button)
      3. Set your export scale in the export options and export.
      4. When printing the PDF to paper, set Page Scaling to None in the Print dialog (assuming you are using Adobe Reader), the default is Fit to Printable Area

This should get you a correct print within the tolerances of your printer.

Here is a toilet seat with grab bars, made by IDO. It is in need of some cleaning, I imported it from GDL and just smoothed it.

And the SU front page misses the small "lines to faces to buildings" video that was the first thing to make me a convert in the early rel.3 days.

Don't cover the paintings with the lighting fixtures. Better use spotlights fixed to the ceiling.

    • RE: Google scrambles the SketchUp websites again

I have always been somewhat sceptical of "company style guidelines" or similar concepts. Of course, a logo might be useful, but many companies just are so diversified and segmented that any strict regulations become straitjackets that neither customers or staff feel comfortable with. If you sell potatoes and perfume and try to do it in a common style the result is usually drab.

    • RE: Push-Pull sometimes won't delete face

There always seems to be a limit to the accuracy of the math behind the models. A known example is that SU 2D hidden-line output from any but very small models almost always has some lines missing. I don't know if the inches that lurk there deep within SU make it any easier for a modeller using metric.

    • RE: How to view actual size?

Basically the view in SU is like looking out of a window. There is no such thing as "actual size" in that, and inversely, everything has its actual size all the time.

    • RE: Is Sketchup good for designing board-games?

SU is primarily a 3D design tool with no emphasis on typography. I would recommend for a board game designer to use some 2D illustration software, like Adobe Illustrator, FreeHand, Xara, or Corel Draw. These treat text and lines as vector graphics, so the output would always be the best the output device allows. Also a hybrid vector/raster package like Canvas might be good. With some more limitations, even Photoshop could be used.

SU 3D Text objects are converted into facetted 3D entities when entered, and the real text objects can only be placed relative to the screen, so using SU in stead of a 2D drawing package is a waste of energy, the powers of SU are elsewhere.

You can set the import scale units in the Import options dialog that opens from the Options button in the Import File dialog box (down on the right, below the thumbnail pane) The default is Feet, and it is independent of the Units settings in the Model Info panel.

sketch3d.de: why FX rather than NVS?

The NVS is a series of 2D display cards meant for business users (like stockbrokers etc) who need multiple screens. People have had problems running SU with hardware acceleration on it.

Other sorts of clients might not be taking themselves too seriously, so better luck with others. But of course if a client got used to your jokes he might in subsequent projects just start looking for your easter eggs, and forgetting about the architecture. I have forgotten the name, but there was a famous British architectural modelmaker (used by architects like Rogers, Foster, grimshaw etc.)who used to add things like this to his fabulous presentation models.

    • A glitch with Photomatch

I have created a Photomatch scene for my model. For later playing in Photoshop, I want to export two images from SU, one of the background only, and another with the model inserted. So I deselect the "model" checkbox from the Match Photo dialog box, and my model disappears from the screen, leaving only the background. Now I export a JPG file - hey presto - the model is shown in the image, but not on my screen. The model remains hidden even if I change my view to fall away from the Photomatch mode. I have to specifically hide the model for it not to show in exports.

In the United States 1820 is an historical building... If you were in Spain you would shout and scream of terror with such modern buildings

In Finland, too, a building that old is quite rare. We have a little more than 100 late medieval stone churches, 7 more or less ruined late medieval fortresses but the bulk of our buildings are less than a hundred years old. Of course, during the history, wood has been the prevailing building material, so rot and/or fire has been the fate of most old houses. I live in the second oldest town with the oldest mentions of it in documents from the late 1300s, but during the history it has burnt down several times, so the oldest buildings except the late medieval church are from the mid-1700s.

    • RE: Really bad performance on Mac OSX Leopard

      Vodnivole,

Regardless of platform or OS, to me your tale of woe sounds like it might also be some serious hardware problem, like with system cooling, memory or motherboard, or even a beginning harddisk failure. It might just be that as SU is possibly the most system-taxing software you are running so it is only showing with it. Better have everything checked. During the years I have had lockup problems with three of my Macs at home (in the old, old times), and they all had motherboards replaced under warranty.
