3D Warehouse is not downloading anymore (2017-2018)
-
Hello, since yesterday 3D Warehouse (for SKETCHUP 2017 AND 2018) is not downloading anymore for me. I can open it and search the models just fine, but when i click on it and try downloading nothing happens. Tried unistalling and shit like that. Nothing works.
What happened?

It was announced a while back that SketchUp would no longer support SKP versions older that v2019 when downloading from the EWH.
That's now in effect. There's the Collada option for older SketchUp versions...
Sorry

This is not a SketchUp bug so I moved it to the Sketchup Pro & Make Discussions category.

Downloading 3D warehouse items into a Sketchup 2017 model no longer works, but apparently a workaround exists. Reportedly it involves logging into https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/?hl=en 33 with an up to date browser using Trimble id and password, and downloading the desired warehouse item; then importing the item into your Sketchup 2017 model. I tried that but it didn't work. I was able to download the item, but when I tried to import it I received a message saying it had been created in a later version of Sketchup than mine (2017) and that to complete the procedure I would have to upgrade to the current version - i.e. after payment of US$299/CA$375 to Trimble. When downloading the item in my browser I was offered 4 options: Sketchup 2019, 2020, 0r 2021, or something called "Collada". I assumed the later model versions probably would not work with my Sketchup 2017, so I tried downloading and importing the Collada version but unfortunately that didn't work either. It appears the functionality of the free versions of this invaluable software are being progressively diminished, leaving frequent users with only a very expensive alternative to achieve the same results that have been provided free for years. I doubt that is what Google had in mind when they sold this software to Trimble on the condition that there would always be a free version available to the public for private, non-professional use.

Google didn't make any conditions like that when they sold SketchUp to Trimble. Google would have just let SketchUp die like they have with many other applications they've purchased over the years. It was clear that Google wasn't interested in investing any more to improve SketchUp. The last version released under Google ran for several years.
For your hobbyist use you can still use SketchUp 2017 Make and get components from the 3D Warehouse through the Components panel or as you described, you can access the 3D Warehouse through your browser and get the Collada files to import. You could also switch over to using SketchUp Free.
You said using the Collada version didn't work. Why? SketchUp has been able to import the .dae files included in the Collada zip file for years. What happened when you tried it?

which is absolutely right Dave! I am far from being a hobbyist and use the latest SkUp versions very intensively in my professional environment. With almost the same intensity I also use SkUp 2017 Make as a private person and to be honest, up to now there is almost nothing I would miss so far... -
This is p!$$. Forcing all users who use warehouse to use 2019 onwards...? F-U.
This has triggered me to move to finally move 100% over to Fusion360 after 12 years of solid sketchup use and word-spreading thru the industry. I'm now converted to 360 after being locked out from using my own models from the warehouse. I don't want to spend $2000 every year for my machines to stay up to date with a program that is already lacking in so many ways. Seeya, won't miss you and the frustrating plug-ins needed (& often needed to be purchased) to make even the simplest curves, bulges, chamfers, 3D model checks and the need to upscale to 10x real size to create polygons before reducing back to 10% of the design. Its terrible for 3D printing too... Its Terribly-terrible as soon as you try and make a semi-complex model from several parts to be prepped for 3D printing. Good luck finding a quick way to find and erase 100's if not 1000's of polygons, open ended lines, points and 'artifacts' that are caused when merging two items together for 3D printing... unless they are a VERY simple shape at a decent size scale.

There is always Blender to translate models. Fgx for example can be translated into Dae. If a Collada file fails to open in Sketchup 2017, put it through Blender and export.

Due to recent changes in the Chromium embedded browser, we are no longer able to support the embedded web dialog in SketchUp 2017 Make and Pro.
You can still download from 3D Warehouse using an up-to-date browser like Chrome, Edge, Safari, or Firefox, or by using the Components dialog in SketchUp 2017. Thanks for your understanding.

In keeping with SketchUp’s Current Minus Two policy, 3D Warehouse content is available in the current version and the two versions prior to it. When a new SketchUp version is released, the files for the oldest supported version will be removed. A Collada (DAE) version of the uploaded model is also always available for all users to download, however, the original uploaded version is available only to the original uploader.
