Could someone please tell me how to use this plugin in sketchup? I put the file in the plugins folder but I do not see a "UV tools" context menu. Please let me know.
Thanks,
Justin Spencer
Hi spence,
Someone else posted this issue using a Mac system. I am actually not sure if the plugin works at all on Mac. Has anyone got it to work on Mac?Yes, the trick on a Mac is finding the right ruddy plug in folder.
Go to Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Google SketchUp 7/SketchUp/plugins and stick your ruby script in there.
Ignore the plugins folder in the SketchUp 7 package in Applications, it's just there to confuse you.
I've just tried it on one object, a complicated vase that already had the texture badly applied by projection. Worked fine. Texture a little woolly looking but UV projection correct. I will experiment with the textures to see how it works.
Great stuff Whaat!

I downloaded this plugin today, since I had the need to map a sphere. In SU 7.1, I created a sphere (by creating a circle, deleting half of it, then using follow me to create the spehere. I select the entire sphere, right click and choose the UV Tools content sensitive menu option, and SketchUp crashes and closes down.
Is this plugin compatible with the free version of SU 7.1? If so, any idea what I might be doing wrong?
-
Hi Wizaerd,
It crashed my SU 4 times today, too.
I'll have to get a better look into it but then Dale (developer of this plugin) can also see the details (I'll make sure to let him know if I found that the tool is indeed the culprit). -
now we are on sketchup 7.1 , and no improvement on special mapping!!! so once again I am gonna ask our ruby heros for help and progressing the script

No need to create a sphere the hard way. If you have SketchyPhysics installed, use it to easily create a sphere with the SketchySolids toolbar. UVtools will map it without problem, except for a few hurricanes in both poles.
-
hi,
I haven't tested the plugin using SketchUp 7.1 yet. Maybe there is a conflict...
-
SU 7.1 here, and no conflicts at all.

I didn't necessarily think that method of creating a sphere was hard or difficult. Plus the plugin you reccommended, SketchyPhysics, seems a bit overkill just to create a sphere... I don't use Sketchup for animations, so physics aren't really necessary for what I'm using it for, unless I'm missing something...
-
Hehe. True - for a couple of second job you really don't need that robust plugin (or you can even make a couple of spheres and save them as components and keep reusing them)
-
That's why I said:

Is there something I can submit or show that'll help troubleshoot the porblem I'm having with it? Because everytime I try to use it (just choosing the menu option in the right click menu) causes my SU to crash, each and every time.
-
i guess you could post the .skp of your sphere along with the texture to make sure those aren't causing a problem..
fwiw, it works for me with su7.1
[edit] oh, make sure you have the proper face (front) showing.. if i'm trying to map the sphere with the back face showing -- instacrash..
also, make sure there is a texture on the sphere before using the tool.. trying to use the tool on the blank sphere will crash su
-
I suppose I can send the sphere, but it's just a basic sphere. Created a circle, deleted half of it, used the follow me tool to create the sphere, made sure the faces were all pointing outwards. As far as the texture, I never get to that point. I select the sphere, right click to choose UV Tools->Spherical Mapping and SU crashes, so there's no texture involved. At all. And it consistently crashes each and every time...
EDIT
Never mind, I get what's wrong... Never dawned on me I had to have a texture applied before I run the plugin... Completely my fault... D'uh.
-
ha, yeah.. afterall, you are trying to map the texture

I assumed the plugin was creating UV coordinates so that when a texture was applied, it would use them. I really feel kinda stupid now... heh heh heh
-
is there a box mapping function for this?
-
good work - thank you .
-
Thank you so much.Very kind of you (all).
Regards.

Thank you for your plugin. Between all of you (plugin´s developers) are going to do of sketchup a software as good or even better than softwares like rhinoceros.
cheers
