Thanks folks, the light levels in the second render were raised in Irfanview. Handy little app.

It as if Father Ted and The Hobbit had a spinoff series. The image itself looks very CG. The lack of bevels and the overuse of busy patterns give it an unrealistic appearance. The HDR/Background Image is too low res which adds to the CG feel. Not my cup of tea but if you're chuffed with the result then that's all that matters.
