I haven't tried resclaing the material. However I did try repainting the faces with a completely different texture and the same thing happened. Its almost as if the face itself has been set to a particular scale. Could that be possible? I've never heard of it being done before.

That "problem"-group (the painted group) has been scaled indeed.
Right click on it to see in the context menu.
Scaling it back to normal will probably fix the texture to normal size.

    • RE: Rotating locally

      reflexion,
The only way I can think of right now is to temporarily change their properties to 'Always face camera'.
When orbiting they will all have their local axes rotated, i.e. Red= horizontal on screen and Blue= vertical on screen.
But it's going to be difficult to figure out how to get this to work properly for you.
(Rotation is only working in one plane)

I guess it could be done by writing a ruby script for this purpose:
-select components (and/or groups) to be rotated
-select option a) local axes intersection or b) component center
-input rotation angle and select (counter)clockwise
      -etc.

      @alan fraser said:

Use 2 section planes...1 down at ground level, 1 just above the highest point. Set up 2 scenes, either from the same viewpoint or different. Then edit and update each scene so that you have the lower section active in scene1 and the upper section active in Scene2. Adjust the transition time to get the effect you want.

      architeriffic,

Following Alans advice you may even want to exclude the 'Camera Location' from being saved in both scenes.
See the 'Scene Manager' to uncheck 'Camera Location' just before 'saving as a new style'
This will allow you to see transitions taking place from any angle. You can even orbit during these scene transitions. Although not always with the best results.

    • RE: Transparent or absent faces??

      Kurt,

About the unfilled loop: 3 out of 4 corners are coplanar, obvious (3 form a triangle and are always coplanar) One solution: the bottom corner near the green axis needs to be moved in the red AND green direction to fix things, to position it perfectly below the other endpoint of the vertical black line => result=blue.
But there is more going on here. These examples give the most problems because you do have the topline that shows as being on axis but it is NOT!! It is within tolerance, so to speak. The vertical black one is without tolerance hence shows black as it should.

To resume: the short vertical black has an angle with blue that is without tolerance while the longer top red edge has an angle within tolerance with red.

How to check: change your settings as follows:
Window > Model Info > Units > change Format: Fractional to Decimal with high precision.
Open your nested component to reach the bottom level, the edges and endpoints in question (i.e. ultimate edit mode).
Use the ‘Text’ tool to label the 4 endpoints. You will see following coordinates:

      A= 13,559926", 2,049547", 12,394535" C= 10,567197", 2,049763", 12,394535"
      B= 13,559926", 2,049547", 11,842216" D= 10,569578", 2,048282", 11,828312"

Here you can see that A and C don’t share the same green value hence aren’t even
      on red axis.

How to fix this side is easy but how much that influences the rest of the geometry depends strongly on how accurate the rest is.
Redrawing the arc you should do only after fixing the position of the 4 vertices
      (here: moving C AND D)

      Hope this helps,
      Wo3Dan

p.s. Why is correction important. When not, you will constantly get conficting situations for the inferencing engine 'gets confused' about inferencing with almost on axis endpoints and the corresponding axis itself

    • RE: Doing dashed lines

      James, Bob,

In the image (cube) you provided I can see the option 'Convert to Xlines'.
Are they construction lines i.e. short guides with the same properties as guides?
Are they going to be deleted with the 'Delete Guides' option in the 'Edit' menu? Can you snap to them while drawing?
I use the cline.ruby and don't see the option 'Convert to Xlines' in the right click context menu. So this must be another ruby. It there a button to select a [guide line pencil] to start drawing these lines like in cline.rb?

      Nice design. Nice render.
Having had a closer look I can also see some truth in remus's remarks, especially about dof in the second image.
Another though minor thing. It looks a bit like your house is floating above the grass, no real 'connection'.

      Hi,

Is it possibe to push\pull faces located behind other faces (in x-ray mode) ? I hope it is possible.

      Thank you.

      Alphavill,

Not just like that. In X-Ray you can only get to (i.e. select or work on) edges, guides, components and groups (by their edges) etc., not other faces.

There is a simple workaround, create two shorcut keys, one to 'hide', the next to 'unhide last'. This is my approach:
      Window > Preferences > Shortcuts > assign "Edit/Hide" to key combination [Ctrl+U]
      Window > Preferences > Shortcuts > assign "Edit/Unhide Last" to key [U]

Now to come back to your question:
-select front face > hit [Ctrl+U]
      -apply push/pull on back face(s)
      -hit [U]

Remus, (the link to) that horn lacks the twist. Cross sections aren't parallel -> Different approach.

Here is a handmade twisted tapered bend column in attached -.skp file.

      • rectangle 3mx3m pulled up 30m
      • top scaled by 0,5* (with +CTRL)
      • top rotated 15 degrees about center (midpoint diagonal)
      • sliced by 11 section planes
      • edges drawn on each section plane
      • outside-diagonals to create outer faces
      • grouped entire structure and rotated flat (horizi=ontal)
      • applied Smoove tool (in Edit mode)&(large radius / 30m) on structures center
      • rotated back (vertical)
      • smooted (WIP) edges and diagonals to create outer smooth surface

Well, what do we learn from this? Always have a big smile on your face when drinking beer or even better….. carry around a huge mirror to hold in front of you at the right time…. when Google comes along. So you will always be able to trace the Afro-American 😎 once you are looking at ‘Streetview’ later.
b.t.w. how was the beer? Will we soon get to see (in ‘Streetview’) what brand you prefer?

-First click (and hold down LM button) to select first point
-Drag in red direction and release mouse button.
-Continue to select first and second point to determine beginning and end of the rotation.
You can also lock the rotate tool and protractor to a face by using [Shift] when draging to
      the center of rotation.

thanks! but how do I get the oblique projections?

one2 (the man with many names!),

I thought making oblique projections (-cavalier and -cabinet) was more or less taken care of in the other forum:
      http://groups.google.com/group/sketchuphowto/browse_frm/thread/1ef6ee1e6bfada67#
in sort of simulating/approaching the right projection. I'm still thinking of a better way though.

About the other projection: planometric. To set up a 3D-environment for this seems a lot easier.
In fact I think it could even be made into a ruby plugin for general use. That's for ruby-scripters to decide and for you to request.
If not you could use sort of a template if you need it a lot.

Let me work on the model to present on how to achieve this.
A little patience s'il vous plaît. I got to do it right. I'm half way now.

      ridix,

It's likely that you have 'Enable length snapping' checked.
To ease things when drawing (reduce jumpy cursor behaviour) just uncheck this feature:
Window > Model Info > Units > disable (uncheck) lenght snapping. (or reduce value as much as possible)

      @remus said:

      .......
To make a 2d comonent always face he camera, you need to explode it then mak it a component again, there should be an option to 'always face camera.' You need to make sure the component is aligned properly before you do this, though.

      remus,

No need to first explode an existing component to change its property ‘Always face camera’.
In fact it’s not even desirable at all since you may mess up layers and/or texture assignments.
(default geometry in a higher level will inherit (when exploding) certain assignments without you wanting that to happen.)
      What you can do is:
Window > Components > Select-tab > In Model-tab > right click on the component that needs to be changed > Properties > and select (check) ‘Always face camera’.
Another advantage: you don’t have to bother with component axes again if they where right in the first place. The component will simply rotate properly (R/B=screen) to 'face camera'.

As the title says, I was wondering about the use of this function. I have known about it for a while, but it isn't listed anywhere obvious in sketchup.

Is it just a glitch or does it have some use I am not getting?...

      mxabucknell,

This feature is most certainly described in Sketchup User's Guide.

      @unknownuser said:

      Suspending the Gravity Setting
The Orbit Tool is designed to maintain a sense of gravity by keeping vertical edges pointed up and down. Press and hold the Ctrl key during orbit to suspend this gravity setting and to roll the camera on its side.

There are more than one 'reasons' to use the option 'Orbit+[Ctrl]'.
One is to be able to see your model from any angle you wish with rotated camera. Obvious!
You can then save these scenes for as Gaieus wrote, the rotated camera setting is not stable. Releasing Ctrl will bring the camera in vertical position again.
This feature can also be very useful when you need to make special selections dragging a window 'around' part of the model that you want to select. Often you can only do so after more or less rotating your model in the right position.
Now you can do that even better with the option 'Orbit+[Ctrl]' to align that part (the geometry) vertical/horizontal to the screen, like the selection window is aligned. (SU hasn't the best options for selections).
Try to 'Orbit+[Ctrl]' your model clockwise or couter-clockwise to have other geometry vertical/horizontal aligned , combined with 'Wire Frame' back and forth etc. to see how much more you can do when selecting certain geometry.
