I thought there was a program that worked with sketchup (developed with or partnered with) that could import skp files and convert them to nurbs. I swear I recall it was featured in a newsletter or some sort of announcement. I've searched all over trying to find it again. Anyone recall the program's name?

Shark FX does not currently support SketchUP 8.

you can save a copy as Sketchup 7.

I just emailed support and asked if I could test the import/export features and they sent me a fully functioning [time limited] key.

      Did anything come of this?

    • RE: Video card error, or sketchup error?

      thanks again guys.
well it seems like I have all the requirements that are recommended here http://support.google.com/sketchup/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=36208

my graphic card is an Intel HD Graphics and it claims to support OpenGL 2.1 --> http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/cs-031105.htm

but I did see this on sketchup's requirement page

"SketchUp's performance relies heavily the graphics card driver and it's ability to support OpenGL 1.5 or higher. Historically, people have seen problems with Intel based cards with SketchUp. We don't recommend using these graphics cards with SketchUp at this time."

so does this mean that the Intel HD graphics card does support OpenGL but that it's just not compatible with sketchup's requirements? 😲

I'm gonna go have a stiff drink

That indicate a graphic card issue. Have you tried updating your drivers?

ok the drivers and everything else is up to date on my computer. I tried purging unused and it didn't help. I also tried removing all the plugin and that didn't help either. the file size is only about 2.5 MB. and this only started about a week ago. my laptop is a month old.

you guys got any other suggestions? at the moment I'm working on my stuff with the fast feedback unchecked.

    • Exact wall thickness

Sorry if this is answered somewhere else. I did a quick search to find a plug in or something in the program that would do this.
Basically, certain 3D printers require a minimum wall thickness. for some printable materials it's 1 mm for example.
now I know for a simple flat side I can push pull to that thickness. However, is there a way that a complex or curved open shape (like a bowl) to be clicked on and "thickened" to a specific wall thickness? I've attached an image to better explain what I mean. The underside of this flying saucer is hollow. I want to make the blue or reversed sides extrude a couple millimeters. again, sorry if this is a simple thing and covered somewhere else.
      thanks guys! πŸ˜„

    • RE: Getting Started

So I'm fairly new to this program and the virtual 3D world in general. I get a little lost when someone explains something and uses one or more words that are specific to the program or 3D programs in general. I know this would be a chore for one person to do but perhaps a thread of such words and their definitions could later be organized alphabetically which can be updated quarterly or something as the thread grows. Just a thought.

yeah rich, I noticed it slowed down immediately. my computer is an old old man.

StilTeg, I think you might have something there. I didn't realize I could change all that stuff in the file info thingie. This guy is pretty small. I'll play with it a bit and see if I can break it further. πŸ˜„

That .dea would be Collada .dae, right? What I think I know is, dae can convert to obj(or they are the same thing), and some apps can handle either one.

yep, I messed it up. thanks for catching that. yes, it's collada .dae. sorry 'bout the f up. πŸ˜„

    • RE: What's your beginners tip?

So a lot of hobbyists have been using SU to design various parts for their projects and printing them at shapeways.com

The exported .dea files out of the free version, which is what I have, seems to upload unprintable for some reason. I was able to solve this by downloading MeshLab and importing the .dea file into it and then exporting it again as an STL. the same file became printable. I'm not sure how this wizardry works but it does.

hope this helps someone out. this bit of info would have saved me a week of swearing! πŸ˜†

    • RE: Crazy lines

      Thanks for the responses guys.

wasn't sure how to look up the graphic card. but after a little research I think it's an Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphic Controller. Does that sound right?

Rich, the hardware accelerator was enabled. The lines disappeared when I turned it off.
Gaieus, the lines would "highlight" or turn blue with the rest the connecting points when I double clicked a connecting surface but I couldn't select them by clicking on them specifically. The cut and paste into a new window didn't work as desired. 😞

jgb, I've seen the invisible lines before, these were something else. They weren't dotted and seem to be very random. but I didn't know about the hidden line feature. πŸ˜„

Mitcorb, I did scale up the entire model recently. That everything looked fine when I saved it and closed it down. It was when I reopened the file later in the day when these lines showed up.

So, for the time being, turning off the hardware accelerator made them go away. Just for the fun of it, I turned it back on to see if the lines came back. They did not. I spun the model around a bit, zoomed in and out etc etc and they didn't come back. So, should I have my hardware accelerator on or is this something I should have off at all times when working with SU.

      thanks again folks.

    • Crazy lines

I know the subject title is not very descriptive but I'm not sure what else to call them. I've been working on a fairly complex action figure in SU 8 on xp and everything was going fine until this happened.
      2.jpg
It doesn't seem to be affecting the file in that when I exported it in 2D the lines went away. I had to print screen it to get this image. I can't select the lines or make them go away.
      any thoughts?
oh and please talk to me like a dummy. I'm so newb it hurts.

      Hi everyone,
you've got a great site going here. I wanted to start off by thanking you for a) having this place and b) solving so many of my early problems already. So, thanks.
I'm new to the program and I'm basically using it to try and design some toys for myself. toys toys...not adult...things. πŸ˜•
      anyway, Hi!
