    • RE: Texture: how to map it to a bending cylinder

Mapping textures can be tricky in some situations, but what you're talking about doing is fairly straightforward using a projected texture.

Paint the texture on a vertical face, like a rectangle, then right-click > texture > projected. Then sample the texture and apply it to the cylinder or bent cylinder.

    • RE: Request Tutorial how to create Groove Pin

This is actually pretty simple. Here's an example of making two configurations. I didn't bother with any captions on the tutorial because I think it's pretty self-explanatory.

      See what you think

    • RE: Skb file location

Once you exit SU normally, the Autosave backup goes away. If you subsequently decide you should have zigged instead of zagged, without the incremental backup, you've got no way to get back where you were and wish you could be again. With a little imagination, I'll bet you can think of some situation where you'd be rather glad to have the .skb on hand. You really only need to have an incremental backup save your ass one time to make the almost trivial housekeeping chore of dealing with them worth while.

Turning off the incremental backup strikes me as an incredibly short-sighted thing to do, particularly for the non-reason of saving hard disk space. With the huge size and insignificant cost of hard disks these days, an incremental backup has to be the greatest value in insurance you're likely to find.

Why such a tiny image? I have some ideas how to go about this, but I'd like to try my hand at it before I start advising.

If you provide a representative image, I'll see what I can suggest.

Quick question; could you try the Pipe anolg path plugin with it? I would wonder if that runs into the twist glitch as well

Gaieus, the result is the same using Pipe Along Path as using Follow Me: there is a conspicuous seam where the extrusion loops back into itself as a result of twisting.

Okay, kilgo, here's a step-by-step solution. The .skp file was a bit too big to upload, for reasons that will be apparent, so here's a series of still shots:

    • RE: Can You EASILY Change Protractor Orientation?

      Louis,

I guess you mean the Rotate tool, not the Protractor, although both are oriented the same way.

In addition to the two techniques you and Remus have mentioned, you can also orient the Protractor/Rotate tool to a system axis using inferencing, without reference to existing geometry or camera orientation. When you set the axis of the tool, instead of just clicking the mouse, divide that action into mouse-down and mouse-up. First, place the cursor over one point of the axis--say an endpoint or midpoint--and press the left mouse button down, and leave it down.

Now drag the mouse in the direction you want to orient the axis. You will see that it trails a dashed rubber band line that represents the proposed axis of rotation. When the dashed line approaches one of the system axes--red, green, or blue--it will snap to the axis and turn the color of the axis, just like with any other inferencing action. When the axis of rotation is aligned with the desired system axis and is displaying in the associated color, release the mouse button (mouse-up), and the axis will be set, whereupon you can proceed to click to set the starting and ending angles.

    • RE: Plug-ins load in default template

      Hank,

Plugins do not depend on the template to load. Most plugins will load when SU starts up just by virtue of being present (that is, the *.rb file) in the SketchUp 6\Plugins directory, which SU reads at startup. In some cases, in addition to being installed in the Plugins directory, a plugin will have to be "enabled" by being checked in the list on Window > Preferences > Extensions.

      Dama,

      1. There is an item called Check for Updates on the Help menu.
      2. Layout is included with the Pro version of SU only. If you're using the free version, as I am, you don't have it.

    • RE: Help- how can i draw this 3D (water drop)

      ocean,

Just select two adjacent sections (circles) and click the Skin toolbar button. Each circle will be part of two skinning operations as it is joined with its neighbors on either side. If you're using the version that Darrel just uploaded, set the Preferences to:
      Skin Method: By Distance
      Prep Method: None
      Clean: Yes
      Smooth: --

This was done using skin.rb. Obviously, the more sections you use, the smoother the contour.
