Batch render in 2.0 solves this now. It's pretty straightforward.

Just tested a simple cube using RT with a Titan X GPU and it doesn't work. Like Andy said, for now use CPU and if you access to DR nodes, use them as well.

I am not having any luck with it currently. When it did work, it wasn't great. Let's keep pusing for a 3.0 release!

Displacement is just a bad deal in VR4SU, in my opinion. Every post I see about insane render times always turns out to be a displacement material in the file.

Pixero, keep making those proxies for the SketchUcation store! They are great and the pricing cant be beat!

    • RE: I hear crickets....

I have been using Thea for about 2 weeks now and all I can say is that it has been fantastic. I really love the ease of use, the UI, simplicity of the settings, the flexibility, and most of the all the development team has been very responsive to my questions and suggestions.

I did shell out the money for a TitanX card and that has been life altering. It's a terrific render engine and I think the integration into SketchUp along with the Presto engine is a ton of fun! I was initially worried about learning yet another render engine's parameters but it really only took a couple of days before I felt really comfortable with it.

    • I hear crickets....

Starting to feel like that period when we were all using 1.49.01 and 1.49.02 (for the pirates). Where are the Chaos team members? What's going on in the development? Where's the 3.0 teaser videos? I got so bored I bought a license of Thea. 😮

    • Look familiar?

Saw this the other day on Instagram. So used to seeing it every time I reinstalled VR4SU. Did not realize it was a real project.

    • RE: Vray bad quality renders

Just load the preset for Exterior - High. Right now what you have are the defaults loaded. Make sure when you choose the preset, you click the green check mark to load it. You will get better results. Most likely, its your IR map settings. You can save the IR Map and view it with the Viewer that's located in your Start menu / Chaos / VRay for SketchUp/ Tools menu

    • RE: Vray bad quality renders

Splotches are not caused by the JPEG, its your lighting or render settings.

Are you using a dome light or just the VRay Sun?

Have you loaded the highest quality Exterior preset and try that?

Send a screenshot of you settings.

    • RE: FBX Export doesnt export textures

Seems to be a saving to network thing. Exporting to my desktop worked. Hmmm. Simlab worked because it saves the maps to a location in your plugins folder. The other nice thing about Simlab is that when you import the FBX, each object is its own in MAX and not a single group with a multisub material applied. Not sure of the advantage/disadvantage though. Just testing a SU to Max workflow that would allow for a linked file.

    • RE: FBX Export doesnt export textures

Nope. It says it exports them in the results box, but nothing. I wonder if it has anything to do with how V-Ray now makes the textures in SU some weird name located in a temp folder? Tried Simlab's plugin and it works fine exporting the FBX file.

    • FBX Export doesnt export textures

Exporting as a FBX with the Export Textures switch ticked on does not export the texture maps? Anyone ever have this issue?

Take it one step further and add an arrow so you know which way the front face is facing. Similar to how the icon looks in Max.

    • RE: Crappy Performance?

I have been using Simlab's OBJ importer and it is light years better. Imports come in clean, grouped, smoothed, no performance issues. All this time I thought it was just SU not being able to handle the geometry. Never could understand it.

    • RE: Crappy Performance?

Yep, it seems like its the importer (FluidImporter) screwing things up. I opened the file in Ultimate Unwrap and then saved a new OBJ and it imported a file that was way more responsive. Then I tried SimLab's OBJ importer and that was actually the best result. Groups and smoothed geometry ran like a charm. I guess FluidImporter, even though quite fast, might take too many shortcuts, leaving a lot of extra junk in your SU file.

As for thea, I have been testing proxies by importing into Studio and then rendering in SU and I am very impressed so far! Looks great. I actually ran my first production render for a client this week and they (and I) were impressed with the quality.

    • RE: Crappy Performance?

Very impressed with Thea so far. Presto is pretty amazing actually.

This really isn't related to just one particular project. I import OBJs using Fluid Importer and I was curious why those files run so sluggish. Anything from a pillow model to a tree. I get that these things are hi poly and will weigh down performance, but I know what a 40MB SU file 'feels' like and something is just not right with these. Wonder if its FluidImporter?

    • Crappy Performance?

Why is it that I can have a 100MB SU model and zooming, panning, opening groups, etc. seems to work pretty quickly and decently but if I import a hi-ish poly file from let's say an OBJ file and my SU file is 40-60MB it runs like a dog turd? Sooo slow and unresponsive, opening a single group takes minutes. Does SU just not want to play with geometry from other sources? Of all the 3D programs out there, most are capable of importing large files and being able to not come to a grinding hault.

    • RE: How to import max files to sketchup with textures preserved

      I use http://www.fluidimporter.com/

Open MAX file, collapse all VRAy materials to be Standard (might need to install a converter script), then export as OBJ - Using the Bryce setting usually works.

When importing with FluidImporter, make sure you turn off Merge Coplanar and turn on Triangulate. I find this works the best then I run ThomThoms CleanUp.

WARNING - Hi Poly models from Max imported into SketchUp can seriously become very heavy. A 3-4MB OBJ file can very easily become a 10-20MB SketchUp file.

If you are using V-Ray 2.0 I would make proxies right away.

    • RE: DR SPAWNER - 50+ SETUP

I didn't think you could have more than 10 nodes? Is it really unlimited? You need the CMD window from what I understand. it cant run as a silent process. Do people in your office understand while you are slaving their machines will run like crap? Its going to use all the resources it can.

My workflow is to only DR to machines not being used during the day and at night send final renders out to whatever I can. Let us know what you are able to figure out.
