Yes, Matt and I are Presenting the book and the basic elements found inside. We are burning the midnight oil trying to have it all wrapped up for basecamp. We are also doing a bootcamp session.

My apologies for underestimating the time required to do this. And don't worry, lots of pictures!

    • RE: 10 years with Sketchup

Congratulations. I couldn't have said it better!

On the schools and software - keep in mind there is huge marketing by Autodesk and others at schools to plant the seed.

I still remember when I made the switch to all layout. I've been using SU since 2002 combining it with ACAD (which I used since version 2.3) I had loaded Windows 7 on a machine and tried to load my 2004 version of ADT to no avail. I called Autodesk and they told me I needed to purchase the latest version for some crazy amount, I can't remember, but it was in the $5000 range. I said no thanks and their response was "what else are you going to use" I responded to that arrogance with "Sketchup, of course" and promptly hung up. I never looked back.

    • RE: Naming Section Cuts?

Sorry, I should have been more clear - when I was talking sections, I was referring to actual vertical building sections. I do keep the sections that create the plan views in the base model as you are showing. My base model will generate scenes for floor plans, roof plans and elevations. The Section file I mentioned, that have the base file referenced, only generate building sections and they are graphic in nature. Their sole purpose is to provide height information and for keying details and assemblies.

Our workflow differ in this point as I use sections for both work and presentation purposes. I cannot have them separate from my regular model as the iteraction between sectionface and model is constant and evolving from day one until final project.

What I tend to do is use layer panel plugin to hide a lot of layers and forget about the scenes tab and manage my scenes from scene manager, where scenes are better finetuned and I can find them faster as I group them by names.

Still, it's a lot of fuss.

Actually mine are always evolving as well. You simply just need to update the reference. I mainly do the separate file to minimize the scene and layer management. It also allows me to run separate files on different machines at the same time. Since the actual model is never edited in the section file, only those tasks related to sections occurs - scene management, section placement, generating section Linework. Same for the RCP and the Site models.

Im very confident this would work for your workflow as well.

    • RE: Scale issues from Skp to Dwg

For the 2d vector scale issue, double check the scene you are exporting from is not only set to Parallel projection, but is also aligned perfectly with regards to view alignment.

This happened to me a long time ago; and what I discovered was that I slightly orbited (very slightly) before I updated the scene. While everything looked fine to the naked eye, it produced a slightly off scaled version. Back then it took me a good couple weeks to realize what had happened. Once I re-aligned the view to the section plane, everything scaled perfectly in the ACAD export.

    • RE: Naming Section Cuts?

I typically run at least a dozen sections (not counting floor plans and RCP) on all my projects. I've found over time, that the easiest/fastest way to deal with the organization of both layer and scene management is to create a separate section file. This file has the base model imported as a reference and is never edited. This file only produces section drawings so it limits the number of layers as well as scenes in a given file. I do the same thing for RCP.

SU currently does not have a native way to name section planes. If you creating any type of Linework from the section plan, you can group the section plane with the LW. Then you can name it.

Or simply select top view, then Cmera, parrallel projection, zoom extents, save scene.

That would give you a plan view of an angled roof distorting the relevant sizes, whereas align view would give you a "parallel projection" of the actual size.
Here is the same roof from overhead and align view.

My apologies, I didn't read all the way through. In your case then:

Select face, align view, camera, parrallel projection, zoom extents, save scene.

Saving the scene allows you to not go through this each time.

    • RE: Duplicating Viewports in layout

Yes, paste in place is key. Also the new changes to the layering are excellent since you can select the layer to paste as well as paste to current layer. I use this method for all my plans to ensure alignment between pages. This makes grids and dimension layers easy mult-page layers.

Or by saving the scene in SU. Then LO will recognize it. Make sure selection in Layout does not say "modified", and is the saved scene in SU.

    • RE: Can not make yellow triangle go away

Have you saved scenes in the SU model? Those scenes should be selected to render in LO in the Sketchup Model tray. If the scene in the LO Sketchup model tray reads "Last saved Sketchup view" then that is your problem. It is very important that the link to the saved scenes in SU is maintained. If you do this, the LO viewport will not shift and you will have no yellow triangles. There is no need to redo any LO work if this accidently happens - leaders and dimensions are snapping to the SU model reference. Once it is rerendered to the original scene (assuming you placed all the leaders and dimensions with the correct scene selected), everything will automatically return in order.

    • RE: Unstable viewports

You simply need to reselect the correct scene in the Sketchup Model tray in Layout. The scene in the tray should never read "last saved sketchup view" It should read the saved scene name from Sketchup. That is the problem you are having and it will be the same from 2015 to 2016.

hi jason, have you tried this one...

      I havn't for a while, but yes!

I think the problem is I like to show exploded stuff in Perspective and that creates challenges for seeing everything nicely in the explosion.

The most annoying thing is that it interrupts my workflow because it makes you have another copy of the SU geometry in a separate file just for the explosion

Rather than creating a separate file, why not just copy and create a separate group for the expoded view and set that on its own layer; then create the "exploded scene". That way, if each element is a component, you only have to modify once, in a single file.

      Hi Paul, my apologies.

We are a little behind, which is my fault. Running an architectural business and writing a book at the same time has been more time consuming than I expected. Trimble came to my office last month to do some follow-up videos, so hopefully this will ease the wait a little. The book will go into a lot of detail on these processes, as well as provide one of my house models to follow along or dissect as you feel necessary. Without Matt, this wouldn't even happen!
Here's a link to the new video series...much more in depth than the last ones:

I'm not sure why I missed the announcement of this book, but I just found out and I'm very excited! Do you have any update as to when we can expect its release?

      This fall!

First post. Nick, fantastic videos and you are an inspiration. I am puzzled about something though, your dimensioning style. I've never seen anything like it. But I see the advantages immediately. Is this your own invention, or something you learned at RISD? I'm used to dimensioning to structural grid lines for columns and such, but you seem to have a system of reference grid lines tied to key jogs in your buildings. Then I suppose you tie intermediate dimensions within those where need in the plan. Certainly makes the drawings look very clean. No more stacked dimension lines around the perimeter (I've had them 5 deep at times). Just curious about that. Can't wait for the book. My wife is getting tired of listening to you in bed while I watch and rewatch the videos on my Kindle...

OK, there is a dirty joke in there somewhere......LOL.

Seriously though, thanks. The grid lines are a standard I've learned over the years. It is very common in the commercial industry to grid all corners and structural points of a building to a grid system. It makes phone and email discussions very easy to comprehend.
