      Oh, those are some of the old videos from 2011. Shortly after I saved scenes for the Linework so no more copy / paste between the two. The connection is all scene based.

      Splitting the model types up probably isn't required for smaller projects, although I use the same system now regardless. What it allows is better control of scenes and sections cuts. Providing that many scenes and section cuts in a single model really becomes cumbersome on a detailed model.

      Dear Nick,

      I am not an architect and so this might be a dumb question, but is your book centred on American standards or would a UK/European architect find this book useful too. If essentially written for the American market, do you plan to publish a companion book that would meet the needs of UK/European architects with respect to standards, symbols etc. People are so busy these days that they want to hit the floor running when trying something new.

      Kind regards,
      Bob

      Certainly. The book is more about the process. Yes it is in American standards, but that really isn't discussed at length. What is discussed is the simple process of model configuration, layout setup and overall concept of producing full CD's with only Sketchup and Layout. The book includes a full sample project in both SU and LO as well as, all the templates I use in both SU and LO.

      JQL How do you split geometry across inside and outside layers of the building? Are external doors and windows residing on both internal and external layers?

      Exactly!

      I have an hole cutting component in the inside of the building glued to each wall face, and I have another hole cutting component in the façade.

      As you got there so fast I'll tell you the following:

      Imagine you have a VERY big master plan to develop. And you're also developing the interior of the each house and each floor of the buildings.

      How would you manage this extraordinary project?

      • Masterplan is composed of several buildings and a plot of land. Each volume is a component only composed of outer wall faces and windows (exactly what I have).

      • Then you export each component into a folder;

      • You then import a that component into a new file;

      • You now got a link between the components of both files;

      • In the new file you start working on the individual building and you create a new component, detached from the first, with only the interior and the oppenings.

      What you get is at least 3 files;

      • Masterplan with terrain and buildings and no interior;
      • Exterior volume components inside a folder that you don't edit;
      • Individual building file with building and interior and no terrain.

      You can further split this building file and send bathrooms and kitchens to your collaborators, structure to your consultants... etc.

      What about that? You can do any project inside sketchup after all! 😄

      NOTE: Let me tell you another thing related to your initiall question - You can do all 3D modelling only in layer 0...

      Excellent JQL! This is exactly what I describe in the book.....the use of multiple models conceived from a master model. You can have a full office working on a single project. It's fast, efficient and much more manageable than trying to create everything from a single model.

      I use simple Arial. I used to use AvantGarde, but it causes issues as well. The font you are using may be a cause for text alignment as well. If they do not have the font, then alignment with leaders will be off depending upon which text is used to replace it.

      I don't use hybrid mode. The benefit of using vector linework is the ACAD export is perfect. Only the raster viewport exports as an image.

      So far no issues with Surveyors, Civil Engineers, Sprinkler designers Etc.

      I think the target audience is educators. With many schools adopting the Chromebooks as standard issue, this is the ideal way to plant the sketchup seed. Due to current limitations on internet access, consistent band width, this is in no way a replacement for Sketchup Pro.

      Most are left aligned, some centered and some right.

      No, I'm exporting to model space. But that's where the model is supposed to be.

      I dont understand why would it be better in paperspace. Would it be because of the deafault white background?

      In Layout, everything exists in what is effectively the equivelant of paper space. You can also export the Sketchup model as DWG in either 2d or 3d, to replace the raster image that is exported from layout in paper space. The Sketchup model is exported in the effective equivelant of model space.

      Give it a try. Since I've done it this way, all my consultants have no issues at all.

      Are you exporting as paper space? That is the key, and making sure your consultant selects paper space. Then everything is there. I coordinate all the time with surveyors, civil and structural engineers without issue. The key is paper space.

      All joking aside, it really was an incredible event. The Sketchup team successfully created a fast paced experience that was really exciting. The venue was beautiful, accommodations were comfortable, and the comradery remarkable. I learned so much about plug-ins, VR, BIM, and the different uses of SU, that it feels like information overload. Thankfully I'm taking a few days to relax and recover. Don't miss the next one:

    • RE: Architectural layer name conventions

      I think those naming conventions simply do not apply to Sketchup and Layout. Simplicity is key and the primary purpose of Layering in SU and LO is visibility. We actually discuss this at length in the new book where there is a heirarchy of layering by:

      1. Overall level (first floor, 2nd floor, etc)
      2. Objects (walls, floors, windows, doors etc)
      3. Special elements (line work, calculations etc)

      It works really well for both setting up scenes and modeling while minimizing the number of layers required. My projects typically have less than 20 layers.

      Whew! Glad it is working out so far!

      I really hope you all enjoy the simplicity of the system.

      The project sample that is included with the book is a finished project, so you not only get to see it develop in the schematic design phase and design development phase, but also into the construction document phase. There are also images of the built home scattered throughout the book.

      This system which I have used for many years now, was finely tuned and honed over the last 18 months with Matt's remarkable skill and knowledge of both Sketchup and Layout. Since I was self taught, it was really incredible to have Matt on board to ask questions, make suggestions and help refine what you see in the book.

      As an Architect, the use of Sketchup and Layout has allowed me to do the one thing that other CAD programs could not............Spend most of my time DESIGNING! Now the documentation falls into place seamlessly allowing the real focus of my services to be as they should.

      Many thanks to everyone here.

      Heed the advice! Always draw on Layer0. Always have all edges and faces on Layer0. Place groups and components on other layers.

      It's all I use for animation and rendering. Probably the most amazing feature on LumenRT is sharing Live Cubes. They are self executable so the end user needs no special software. I issue them to the contractors with every plan set. We do Live Cubes for both Architectural and Structural and it really helps in the field.

      The other aspect that is pretty amazing, is speed. My large site files in SU (80mb) will export to LumenRT directly out of sketchup in about 2-3 minutes. From there I can export animation at 1080P at 1 frame/ 1.5 second. I can also export high res renderings in about 3-5 seconds.

      Solo, they are working hard on the next version with apparently many upgrades! The whole team is still there.

      Sonder,
      This is the direction I want to go.Are you working with the "Studio" version of LumenRT with publisher? I noticed your work featured in some of E-on Software's videos. Kudos!

      What hardware do you use to achieve your results?

      I have the full GeoDesign package with publisher.

      My son built me my computer - It has 32 Gb ram, i7 67XX (not sure), GTX980ti, 500Gb SSD

      We're getting the new GTX1080 next month. The Video card is the most important component. The new 1080 is around $600. I think it should be great for rendering with twice the speed of my GTX980ti.

      Solo, I don't think they are going to basecamp, but I'll check.
