I see the logic but the truth is I really only use sketchup when I'm working on a project so no matter when I get it I will always be learning on the job. After the break-in period how do you feel about the space explorer? Do you find it to be noticeably better than a mouse? If so, in what ways?

Tablet vs. spacemouse vs. other fancy things???
Looking for anyone's first hand experience using something other than a typical mouse with sketchup. I am about to start a new design (residential construction) for a client and am considering buying another type of input device. Right now I'm using a Logitech Performance MX mouse and it works pretty well but I'm sure my experience could be improved with another type of device. Anyone have a gadget they love or hate?
I searched around and didn't see a similar thread, if there is one please let me know.
I'm a pretty fast modeler and use shortcuts for just about everything. I do very detailed models, I essentially model every component of the house, studs, joists, insulation, drywall, trim, vapor barriers, etc.. I use sketchup to see how it will all fit together and find any difficult areas before we even break ground. Side bonus is that I also have all of my quantities figured out when the model is done.
Thanks for any light you can shed...

RE: [Plugin] Color by Slope
Thanks for the quick help, its working now and great for what I am doing

RE: [Plugin] Color by Slope
I tried it again to get the direct quote and this time it worked. It may be that I tried the extension warehouse first then smustard. When looking at the smustard site it listed the prerequisite ruby (progress bar) which I installed.
If this were true it would raise the question: does the extension warehouse (via SU) give a warning or list of prerequisite scripts?

RE: [Plugin] Color by Slope
does this script work for 2013? I tried downloading from the extension warehouse and got some odd error messages. Next I tried the smustard download and installed in the plugin folder (along with progress bar plugin), restarted sketchup, checked my plugin section and do not see it any where. Am I missing something? I would love to try this out.
thanks for any help you can shed -
RE: Transfer pages from one LO doc to another?
Wow, I can not even believe I missed that idea. I got stuck on the idea of transferring over the actual page and couldn't see a way to do it. The idea of just copying over the contents rather than the page didn't occur to me. slaps own forehead
A humble thanks Fred...

Transfer pages from one LO doc to another?
I would like to move a few pages from one LO doc to another, is this possible?

RE: New layer visibility option
Hooray! I'm so happy someone made this. Thanks

New layer visibility option
I often run into this problem. I have a large model with many layers and many scenes. Then the client changes something and I have to add a new layer. This new layer gets put into every single scene I have already composed. I really only want the new layer to show in the new scenes. Now what I have to do is to go into each of my old scenes and remove them.
I would like to see a little dialogue box pop up when I create a new layer asking "Do you want this layer to be hidden in all existing scenes?" Y/N choice. This would just make me so happy.

Window behavior like LO
I configure both LO and SU in the same way, Model on the left and all of my dialogues/windows on the right. In LO I can have all of the ones I use expanded and am able to scroll up and down to get where I want to go. In SU I have to expand and contract the windows to make room for the one I want to use. It is cumbersome, I would like to see and option for the windows to behave like they do in LO.

RE: LO won't render scenes as memorized
After looking at my model I do think that it was a style update issue. Thank you very much for the help with that one, it was getting quite frustrating.
-
RE: LO won't render scenes as memorized
Nice thought Dave, I will take a look. I believe I could still see if that is the case in the SU model.

RE: LO won't render scenes as memorized
I do understand what happens when a scene gets modified and you are right that this is the same symptom but not the cause in this case. To be sure it wasn't modified I set the scene again in the sketch up model tab and hit render (several times actually). I even tried copying a scene that was displaying correctly and then changing the scene.
What seemed to work was to go into SU and memorize another identical scene and then use this new duplicate scene instead. I would still like to know what caused this behavior but I may not get to since I deleted the offending scenes from LO.
Thanks for the feedback Dave and Sonder

LO won't render scenes as memorized
Sorry if this has already been answered before, I searched for a while to no avail.
I have a set of plans in LO and have memorized some house sections. In Sketchup the scenes are displaying as I would like them to. I save the SU model. Move over to the LO file and update the reference. Then I render the scene.
Note that the SU model in LO is showing the scene that I want and it is saying it is rendered. There are many scenes that do not have any problems and then there are 2 scenes with problems. One will not show the active section cut and the other is showing hidden geometry when it's not supposed to. Again, they do not look this way in SU.
Any help is soooo appreciated. LO can be very frustrating sometimes.

RE: Questions raised by Nick Sonder's videos
@mwm, if you select "File > Import... > Files of type" then change to .skp you will then be able to import a sketchup model as Sonder described.

RE: Questions raised by Nick Sonder's videos
Thanks for the quick reply, I thought it would be something along those lines. So I imagine you lock it as a component and then just change styles, scenes, and sections to display as you like.
Thanks again for your contributions and willingness to share your well thought out workflow.

RE: Questions raised by Nick Sonder's videos
The Sonders videos were quite an inspiration to me. I have been modeling in SketchUp and printing plans in AutoCad. I have tried LO a few times and found it too slow and unstable however I am looking forward to trying out his workflow. He seems to have created a workaround for these problems with LO. I'm happy because I sort of despise AutoCad.
Anyway my question about his workflow is how he uses SU and scenes. He mentions that he doesn't like to have too many scenes per model so he will use one file as the master file and then reference this master model in other SU files but only change the scenes. Any editing of the model is done exclusively in the master file and the others are just a way to alter presentation and views of the master. Note that I am not talking about doing this in LO but in SU.
This is something I didn't realize that SU could do and I'm sure it's a simple procedure but couldn't find info for how to do it. Could someone walk me through it?
thanks so much. -
RE: A challenging problem but SU might be able to do it, perhaps
@Dale: Yes it will just be native SU output
@pbacot: That is a good idea I will play with that a bit and see if anything comes out
@earthmover: That is a very helpful thread indeed. I think this may get me pretty darn close to what I want if I take some careful notes about distance and such. It seems like I could get something close by measuring the angle of the field of view and use this to set the scale. Hmmmmm..
Awesome, and quick responses. I love it! Anyone else?

A challenging problem but SU might be able to do it, perhaps
Alrighty SketchUp Pros. I have a client who has presented a challenge and opportunity to knock their socks off.
I have designed a little guest house and garage for them. The guest quarters is on the second floor and there is a beautiful view in one particular direction. They are trying to get a feel for where is best to place windows and such. Is there a way to place the view accurately in a model?
I would be able to place a builders level at eye height and take a bearing on what was directly level on the cliffs across the valley. I also have a tripod which can be set level. I also have the ability to create spherical panoramas of needed.
I have seen the sky dome technique (though I have never done one). Could this be done with any degree of accuracy? I would love to be able to pull this off.
Thank you for any thoughts you are willing to share in this matter,

Source of more accurate/detailed topo information?
Does anyone have a source for more accurate topographic information than Google Earth. I am working with a site for a client that has some reasonably steep slopes and the capture from GE doesn't seem accurate/detailed enough for my needs.
I did search these forums but couldn't find anything along these lines, my apologies if I missed it.
A free solution is always lovely but I am willing to pay for something short of a full survey by a survey crew.
