It's good to see the President rush to the aid of Big Bird cause he sure didn't rush to help the ambassador that got killed on his watch and last I remember PBS wasn't nearly as hostile when Obama's debt commission suggested cutting funding.

Interesting. Obama did not go to the defense of Big Bird. The chart shows a Big Bird fan response to Romney's knee jerk reaction to subsidizing education, arts (includes appreciation of great architecture), and culture. Most governments this side of Somalia also support this type of activity to some extent. The remark about going to the defense of the ambassador is totally unfounded. The ambassador was certainly aware of the risks of being an ambassador and could have requested more security. But an ambassador locked in an armed fortress can not fully function as an ambassador. Also the protests were infiltrated by Al Qaeda operatives at the last minute to create a target of opportunity. Anyhow thanks for the opportunity to set this piece of misdirection straight.

Ahh, thanks, I never noticed that radius inference when the radius is parallel to one of the axes!

One other question, I have read frequently about the "tiny faces/edges" problem, but never have I seen what constitutes "tiny". Is 1mm considered tiny? Thanks!

       Bill

1/64" is the smallest dimension you can even draw in SU. Tiny is when you start to have consistent problems drawing small faces. I would say 1/4" to 1/8" is where the problems starts to show. The easiest fix is to draw at 10 or 100 times larger and when teh file is absolutely final shrink the project by teh same factor.

      Dateline Phoenix 10/4/2012:
The house Frank Lloyd Wright designed for his son David may soon be destroyed by a local developer. Last minute efforts by a cultural resources conservation group has forced a last minute reprieve. But a developer who bought the property says he will not take the financial hit for restoration and if a buyer does not come forward in the next month the house is toast.

    • RE: Including shadow as part of transparent floor render

OK I still can't visualize why you need what your asking for, but I CAN see how to do it.

Take the ground plane where you cast your shadow. With SU drawing tools draw along the edge of the shadow. Do an "intersect with model." Then erase all ground plane surfaces beyond the edge of the shadow. So now you have a ground plane that is congruent with the shadow. With your paint tool, convert the ground plane to a tranparent or highly translucent tinted glass with zero specular reflection.

Now you can place the building and the shadow on any imported image before rendering. Just not sure if the quality of the imported part of the image will meet your needs.

I feel very dense in that I do not understand why the model building is not being placed into a model landscape with a modeled light source and simply being rendered. What is it that I am missing in your original request?

When you say "put into an image" do you mean you are doing this in post production with PhotoShop or Gimp? If so, I would recommend taking the view that matches the angle and distance of the background you are pasting into and doing a select on the shadow and moving that shadow to a different level in Photoshop. Then set the transparency and color balance of that level to whatever you think looks good. The select the non shadow part of the floor and erase it. This should cause your your building and shadow to smoothly integrate into your background scene if you have matched your background perspective. Can you show the background scene?

What are the chances that SU9 will be able to manipulate larger files?

      We've been asking since SU6. ๐Ÿ˜†

I give up on some OBJ imports, from wings3d for example, there's a certain poly limit then I just can't import (or I get strange behaviour, missing geometry etc)

Do you think the poly limit is specific to your machine or does it have to do with the SU code. Any idea about how such a bottleneck works?

    • RE: Turning a 123D Catch file set into a Edward Hopper painting

A problem I am having is that the OBJ files that I export are often too big for sketchup to load when they are don at high resolution and sometime I even have the problem at standard resolution. Cell phone resolution always seems to load. However, the lower resolution of the original 123d Catch file, the more likely the file is to have have those nasty tornado shapped funnels connecting ht 3D object to the background. Now this surprises me because the native highb res 123d Catch files load even though tehy are also carrying texture as well as shape information. Even though the 123d Catch file is is created in the cloud I view it and twist it in space on an app that is resident on my computer.

The high res filoes created are also to big to open in Mesh Lab. So I guess this is just a SU capacity problem. What are the chances that SU9 will be able to manipulate larger files?
