i am going to have to download and start playing with render plugins.

so you want a lava lamp from the 70's eh? well, lets make it realistic! color and current state.
sitting somewhere in a closet, unplugged for years and color correct!

The 'Model this' challenge is not time restrictive, you can take as much time as needed to get it right, the point is when you do succeed that you share your technique with everyone so that it works like a learning thread.

doh! i was thinking of the speed modeling challenge being the same as the 'Model this' challenge

      thanks for the correction

      Really?

      Got any good reference images?

maybe a 'Model this' challenge will bring solutions.

I doubt any attempt under 30 minutes will be close to the below helmet.

      the Shoei VFX-W

30 minutes on the yoke is possible, but to get it looking correctly might take a bit more time.
as for a yoke... more photos if you click on the images.

    • Toughest modeling...

so i have found 2 objects that are amazingly difficult to model!

      1. Motocross Helmet
      2. Drive shaft Yoke

want something to rack your brain? try taking on a modeling of a Shoei or Fox motocross helmet.

want something a bit less frustrating? try a yoke! everytime I get it to look right, its poly count is extremely high!

      just venting

I was wondering, if this could be used for a 'Render this' challenge in the future, my thoughts are that rendering it to look like a toy and not the real thing will take some decent texturing, composing, adding something to give scale or even using DOF or Tilt shift to give final illusion.

      what say y'all?

sounds cool, but i've never rendered anything. i have or had a trail copy of one render app, but never actually used it.

feel free to use it for a challenge!

I didint want to drill down into too much detail, so the wheels arent 100% correct. but everyone that sees it should know what it by name.

had a bit of time over the weekend and played with sketchup some more. was thinking about brining something to the warehouse that was not yet posted, so i started a build of tonka toys!

attached is a head lamp i'm still working on.

projector beams, bubble covers like a mercedes a turn lights.

best advice would be to work with circles and pulling lines. think of wedding cakes and cones.

looks like you're getting the idea! keep it up!

    • Little trailer

So i havent really posted any work in the gallery, so feel free to criticize!

dimensions for this trailer were taken from a Featherlite trailer mfg site. the rest were just best guess by appearance. most of the work i've completed has been via that method.

link to the file on the 3dwarehouse

i have a copy of Vray, but havent played with it much. i find it more enjoyable to create new models.

It will not intersect and clean up, you'll need to do that yourself.

      worked great!

now to work on cleaning edges.

    • Wire frame to pipe?

need some help, as i'm not sure if this can be automated or not.

have a wire frame, almost all square edged, and quite complex. i'm wanting to know if there is an automated way to create a pipe or tube that follows the entire wire frame.

clean edges a plus! prefer not to have pipe inside of pipe, to save some file space.

the model i'm working with is located here

      open for suggestions.

i've been playing with sketchup for around 18 months. i've done almost all i can do with the free version but dont yet see how the use of the tool is profitable.
link to the models i posted on 3dwarehouse

yes, it is addicting, but application to a work environment i'm not seeing.

can someone explain to me the uses for this as a job or profit?

    • Understanding a few key steps...

i'm boggled. i know there has to be a "best practice" way to complete this, but i have not yet discovered.

in post of the gallery for silvershadows eye candy, i understand all of the steps but the first few. i will identify each that i'm puzzled with.

here is a link to the thread with his blackhawk post.

for the below image, i understand how this was created.

      http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x165/hondsekont/02-1.jpg

i understand the vertical slices of the image at each point.

      http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x165/hondsekont/03-1.jpg

this is where i'm puzzled! how is the rounding completed? NOTE: i've been completing this on my own models with trial and error nothing automated

      http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x165/hondsekont/04-1.jpg

and this image... for the slices after shaped to rounded edges, is there an automated process for this or is it manual point connection?

      http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x165/hondsekont/05-1.jpg

i feel that i can create models that can rival his eye candy post if i can get a better understanding of these few steps.

cheers for any help or suggestions!
      thanks!

i've been using sketchup for over a year and each week I'm getting a bit better.

From the models I've posted on the 3dwarehouse, I notice more duplicates posted from other users. I understand and agree with the ability to download a model and call it your own, but I think a nice addition would be for a user to list the % of their own original models on the begging of the users model page(s). At the same time, have a running total of members votes.

      pixelmonkey380's claim of original models = 85%
3dwarehouse members claims of original models posted by pixelmonkey380 = 85%
pixelmonkey380 overall model stars = 4.79 stars out of 5
      total models posted = 53
      models with rating = 19

would anyone else like to see this?
