RE: From a Kid's Drawing to a 3D Model with Sketchup PhotoMatch
Guzman That's very cool. I plan to teach a SketchUP course to kids this summer you can see the promotional video here:

Do you have any suggestions or tips for teaching kids in Sketchup?
how do you embed youTUBE videos in your post? I figured it out...thanks to Simon Le Bon and his excellent tutorial here:

RE: A Noobie's Render
Yes Welcome to SU-Addiction... I agree with this comment:
It's like watching a movie where it's supposed to be pitch black, but the audience still needs to be able to see what happening.
We are creating "altered" reality with the renderings, and as such you are free to take creative license, but of course your viewers must be able to discern what it is you are trying to portray.

There's one way to settle this once and for all...ask Mike.
I think he was at the Premier
Thanks Rich I got a chuckle out of that comment also...Mike is the Gadget Guy after all...heck Now that I think about it maybe it is Mike himself...Maybe Mike is the time traveler....Mike if you are a time traveler can you travel to the future when I am rich and famous and get me to give you a million dollars and then bring it back to me in the present day..It's my money anyway so what difference does it make when I spend it...I already spend money I don't have why not spend my own money I don't yet have.....hehe Hope you are doing well Mike. I missed not seeing all the Original @Lasters

RE: Paint bucket - whats happening here - film
I've posted to the RenderIN website as well this issue is a complete problem for windows users. Has RenderIN made a fix for this to anyones knowledge?

RE: SketchUp in the Browser
Forgive my denseness but will this run Sketchup on a machine that does not have Sketchup installed? is this a web browser version of Sketchup or just running the local install of Sketchup within a browser environment?

RE: NPR Retro Style
Ross your comments are "spot on" you have a great eye and design sensibility. Glad to see that you are graciously sharing your experience and expertise with all of us.
Robert this looks like a fun venture. I have a few "original" S&R catalogs from I have always loved the simple but welcoming renderings of their home kits.

FLABERGASTED...This is Awesome...What a time saver this will be.

RE: Thanks Plugin Creators
YEA THANKS VERY MUCH!!!... as has already been stated SU would not be the tool it is today if it were not for the advancements made by third party developers.
Now GET Back to work developing the next whizbang plugin.....hehe

Umm don't let it "help" you after you get your replacement car...We don't want to have you start another crash thread.

RE: My car....absolutely ruined!
oli Super glad to hear that you were not injured. Sorry about your baby though. I had to say goodbye to my first car a 1972 camero after I hit five cars with it and completely totaled it.
Yes the flashbacks do go away. One thing I clearly remember though is that in the moments that the accident is happening it seems like time is standing still. I remember watching the windshield as it was cracking it seemed as if I was watching every single fissure and it was a time laps video or something. I remember spinning around etc. all in slow motion and then all of a sudden BAM real time returned.
Again great to see that you are fine.

RE: Bounding box as a zoom constraint?
like agamemnus
I have always been bothered by this as well. If you keep the cursor on or above an object this "WACKO" zoom to infinity does not happen. But it's just a workflow thing I tend to keep my focus on modeling and rely on the middle mouse wheel as a navigation tool. I for example never use the orbit icon or the zoom icon etc. It's a workflow habit. It would be great if when an object is selected the zoom feature will use that object as the basis for zooming. I realize there are zoom extents and you can bring the camera back to the previous camera view. What I don't like is that the dynamic zoom jumps so rapidly into outer space if you happen to zoom while the cursor is not above any entities.

RE: Google is Listening!
Diego-Rodriguez Thanks for the informative post. You show some useful Rubies I was not aware of.
I think the Idea of extending core functionality of SU to incorporate Successfully implemented Ruby programs is a great Idea. I'm not sure about the Process and or the ability of Google to simply adopt functionality that was created by third party developers though.
John are there examples of Native SU functionality that originated from outside companies. I believe that the whole Dynamic components addition came about in this fashion if I am not mistaken.

RE: The new Render[In] plugin
Thanks Ross. I am kicking the tires on this one as well.

RE: Google is Listening!
The tone of this conversation has now reached the correct balance. Developers and end users agreeing to mutually work towards a common goal. I clearly remember sitting in a bar in California watching Justin Chin (MonsterZERO) show some of his amazing work and his workflow to several of us beta testers. Todd Burch was present and you had an end user showing his "made up" methodology to accomplish a desired task (rigging) and a developer Todd saying things like we could do that series of manual tasks with ruby. It was great to be present when the people who have the experience and knowledge on both sides of a teeter-totter are working together >>SU is the support in the middle<< The users are on one side and the developers are on the other. It's a balancing act The developers must not be too heavy and the users must not be too heavy. John put it very eloquently when he noted that there is a continuous need to improve hardware and software to meet the demands of the user but as soon as a user has the software and the hardware to meet his current needs he or she promptly pushes the boundaries beyond their current needs and hardware and software are forced to expand yet again (it's a viscous cycle).
Lets just be thankful that we are all here and have a voice in this cycle. Are all the ideas, requests, improvements, etc. going to happen...did all of your plans for your life come true...NOPE. I for one have about 999,000 dollars to go to make my goal of becoming a millionare...hehe.
Maybe John could release a SU retrospective video showing snippets of the development of Sketchup through the ages. I Started using it in version 1 so I remember many of the milestones that were made. It's helpful to know where you have been in determining where you want to go.

Yes, it looks like that mesh.
Now I'm trying to put the label on.
- make an outline of the logo image
- make the outline a group
- open the outline object and extrude it until it completely intersects the boot
4)close the logo shape group - select the boot mesh and the logo shape group and intersect selected
- delete the logo shape group
- Explode the logo image and it becomes a texture
- select the exploded logo texture right click and select texture and make it a projected texture
- use the material selection eyedropper (hold down alt while you are in the paint bucket to sample the exploded and projected logo material
- with hidden lines turned off now you can paint that projected logo texture onto the patch of the boot that conforms to the shape of the logo
- now you can hide the lines that define the shape of the logo or soften them.
voila you have the logo on the curved surface.
there are other ways but this is just the old fashion way that I use.

RE: Google is Listening!
I know Ron Popeil has invented many multi function devices like the pocket fisherman etc. and the Swiss Army knife should be in everyones camping gear, but seriously in todays day and age no one application will meet "everyones" varied needs. Sketchup will certainly NOT meet everyones needs and by the many comments here it is apparent that Many people have and use many other applications 3DStudio MAX, Maya, Blender, Cinema4d, Rhino, Softimage, XSI, Modo, ETC. ETC. ETC. as modeling software and the litany of rendering engines is growing daily, many of which are available as plug ins for Sketchup. The third party developers have written a plethora of ruby plugins and extensions for sketchup that ostensibly extend the functionality of Sketchup well beyond what anyone could have imagined just 3 years ago. We have numerous developers, technical supporters, and past @Last employees and current Google employees who visit and comment here in this private user forum. Sketchup is still by far the simplest 3d modeling application to use and with the free version and the GLOBAL user base the SKP file format is becoming a household name. Let's temper our comments and remember that the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence. I made a post on the original SketchUP user forum Eight years ago which essentially went something like this "SketchUP has forever changed the way I produce and present my work to my clients" I am still using it nearly on daily basis and if you look at any recent architectural magazine that shows an architects proposed solution for XYZ project the likelihood that the image was in some way produced with SketchUP is high.
So ask yourself are you looking for SketchUP to replace 3dStudio Max or Softimage or Maya? It will never do that. Are there free applications out there that do compete on a functional level with the BIG ones YES Blender, Truespace etc. Lets be thankful for the recent additions in SU8, Let's be respectful when requesting software improvements. and Let's enjoy the software for all of the things that it does right which allows it to maintain it's place in our tool bag. Go and take a look at your tool chest I bet you have a hammer, a drill, some screw drivers, some pliers, some wrenches etc. Each of those tools serves a specific function. SketchUP is a tool and should only be one tool in your tool bag If you are serious about your craft you will find the best tool for each task and use that one. Use SketchUP where it is the best tool and use other applications where they are better.
Just my 2cents..

RE: Google is Listening!
Passion runs deep in this community. SU has Come a long way from where it started. Remember when we had to FAKE transparency? because there was no such thing as having a transparent surface material. Have a look at the icon its a pencil sketching a house....that's the origins of this program. It was created as an application to make it simpler to create 3d in the computer in a method that was closer to real world than currently existing 3d modeling software. The developers and the users and the third party ruby programmers have pushed and pulled Sketchup into its current configuration, but lets not loose sight of the origins of the program. I have a mental picture here of a normal looking Honda civic un imposing but functional. and then the next picture is of a totally pimped out low riding flame throwing Honda civic pumping out jamming bass and lit up with neon lights...but under the hood it's still the simple Honda civic. SU has been pimped out but it's still a Honda civic.
