    • RE: Draping a jpeg over a contoured site?

yeah this is posible, however you do not want to drape the image, you need to project it.
this is a very simple procedure:

      1)file/import/(selecty your image)

2)click to place the image in the modelspace, and drag to resize accordingly

3)position the image above your terrain, face upwards (ie blue axis line perpendicular to the image face)

4)context click the image and 'explode'

      5)context click/texture/projected

6)with the paint bucket tool selected, hold the "alt" key while clicking the image
      (this will sample the image)

7)last step! release the "alt" key and use the paint bucket on your terrain.

      voila!

hope this is helpful, if not please to say!
all of this is under the help menu as well, probably in more detail too!

      happy modelling

Adding to Gaieus' reply, I found I can get all three controls with a wheel mouse. Scroll the wheel to Zoom; click the wheel and hold to Orbit; wheel click and hold, then left click and drag at the same time to Pan.

Takes a little getting used to but with practice you can move around well with just the mouse.

i found this out by accident a few months back, at first i thought it was pointless, but looking back, now i realise that i have been doing it more and more frequently.
i guess somehow i find it more instinctive, which is what sketchup is all about really!

he he, i know dude, i was just clarifying! ha ha.
i use this ( http://www.timeleft.info/ ) piece of free software so i never spend too long on something trivial!
that said, sometimes i spend longer using this than sketchup! ha ha.

give it a go, you can set multiple countdowns (amongst other things) and customise each one.

he he, no worries i was just messing, felt a bit lonely...he he.
admittedly 10mins doesn't sound like a long time to make it, but it is essentially just one shape mirrored, and a combination of the draw helix and tube along a path rubies.
that and the fact that it is pretty much all one material, makes it a very quick model to make.
know what you mean about the detail though, i had to stop myself putting the branding on it...maybe tomorrow.

i'm no superman i can assure you.ha ha.

    • RE: Acceptable or unacceptable?

i'm actually better off since i have been driving.
as i drive a classic car my insurance is virtually nothing and i pay no road tax.
i have spent so much on bus and train fares to get to and from work it's crazy.

ooh, i might buy a bike and save even more money! he he

now that is awesome, i don't see that the colour banding has such a detrimental effect as you imagined. in fact, i quite like it in a way

      IT WAS ME

joking...i ebayed my conductors uniform ages ago.

if he had let you retrieve your ticket he would have been a super-conductor...he he

if the conductor was a midget, would that make him a semi-conductor?

      sorry couldn't resist

    • RE: All nighter

solo yet again you have hit the nail on the head.
as a practicing student, there are three rules for an all nighter.

      1. stimulant (ie. coffee, redbull, pro-plus etc)
      2. background noise (radio, tv, anything that makes a noise but isn't too distracting)
      3. a clear goal (always aim to achieve the best, and not to do the minimum requirements)

i guess you could add a fourth rule, being never on any account stop for a break long enough for you to fall asleep (i try not to stop at all)

ha ha, this is awesome! didn't mean to cause such a recation, but i'm glad i did!
maybe we could have s simple modle of an everyday object which everyone makes each week so we can compare modelling styles n stuff?

come on peeps, more people need to make a rubiks cube!

on the contrary, i believe your model is the better of the two!
my rubiks cube is fully complete (took me ages till i worked out the sequence!) but it seems a lot better with the colours mixed up. is that a genuine mix or a guess?
i ask because something about the blue just doesn't seem right.

      very nice render too!

shall we start a rubiks based sketchup competition? ha ha
