Dave thank you for your reply, I understand your facts but that doesn't mean that I and many others which have been using SU for many years are wrong to be deeply disappointed...Don't want to be rude but by the way how much will it cost to follow your suggestions for such a basic feature (probably you don't need it if doing "woodworking").
Perhaps is time to learn Blender or why not Rhino.

RE: Geolocation 3D toggle feature removed
Unacceptable! what architectural project we can do without geolocation?? is like going back to pen and paper but on a computer. Both Google and Trimble are dismantling a good software which was mostly built by users and developers... same all! people do the hard work and companies make a mess while profiting.
PS geolocation not longer available in SU 2014. -
RE: Texture workflow
After 3 years HeadsUp UV layout still the best way for me to texture some geometries even though some times I have problems exporting and importing uvs not to menthion that I can't save the unwrapping/texturing for another day. does any one have similiar problem?
I have noticed in the last catchup ed19 that mr Obrien is also using Blender and reality paint.
Whats the best method for you to unwrap geometry for texturing this days?
Thx for any comment. -
RE: Sketchup in big architecture offices (running Revit)..
Thx SI'X and sorry thomthom for misspelling your user name ... so how is SU looking in big Architecture office in 2015?
-
RE: Sketchup in big architecture offices (running Revit)..
- Agree. Although SU is the most user friendly could be quite intricate by using many plugins.
- What's IMO?
3.How large or heavy can be done in sketchup?
I thought Autocad was mostly used for technical drawings but with Revit you document (detailed construction drawings, materials specifications, quantity, etc) while modelling a designed building for regulators and contractors. which I guess is a big part of a large Architecture office.
How about PlusSpec?
PS it worries me that if we loose guys like tomtom, fredo,Tig etc who actually made SU competitive we could end up doing things 'the hard way' using those 'monsters'
-
RE: Sketchup in big architecture offices (running Revit)..
All right!
There still a lot I got to learn from SU but I noticed people are struggling to link SU to popular BIM like Revit and perhaps plugins like PlusSpec could fill the gap. -
RE: Sketchup in big architecture offices (running Revit)..
Interesting thread! even more for people like me who will like to work in the field of Architecture.
I understand that most big Architecture offices are using Revit, since according to Randolph ''excels at documentation'' and '' Revit and 3d Max are now sold as an Autodesk package deal with 'smart' FBX linking between the two pieces of software'' any other reasons?
Since last reply was in june 2012, I was wondering if you guys now think SU could do what Revit does using plugins like PlusSpec?? are you guys still using SU in your offices? if yes, more or less than Revit?
I don't mind to use 3dmax again but I don't really want to do Revit. Excluding SU, Vray, AutoCad and/ 3dmax what software do you guys think I should start learning?

RE: Vegetation to 3rd party?
Thanks Ocean & Casca, yes I have looked at Plant factory and will check Speedtree, actually I'm not too concern about something a bit pricey as long as is good, widely used and not too complicate to learn.
Does proxy in sketchup solve the problem even if I use many different plants of 15mb + each? to be honest I have not used the new vray 2.0 yet.
Will be nice to make like a poll to see what people here are using to deal with photorealistic vegetation. -
Vegetation to 3rd party?
Hi, I will like to learn how to add a lot of 3d vegetation to some of my sketchup models in a photorealistic manner. I'm not sure that even with the new vray 2.0 and proxys I could achieve it without having to worry about polygon count all the time.
Could you guys advice what third party software to use? I'm thinking something widely use, in a good price and not too difficult to learn. 3d max, Vue, LumenRT, Maya? I believe that will have to render there but would I be able to keep textures?
Thanks for any comment or advice. -
RE: Creating a new surface! Help please!
my bad! sorry, even using sandbox from contours create some unwanted lines and faces... will check first next time!
-
RE: Creating a new surface! Help please!
All right! but why not to start by extruding plane 1 and scaling the top surface to get plane 2?

RE: Component texture Help junkie fix
Thx Casca and Dave,
guys I have tried TIG idea for the pinecote pavilion which I think went ok, using a rectangular components for all columns and beams, trying to keep file size small. Please check the model in the 3d warehouse as pinecote pavilion ( about 6mb but went to 7mb after location) please let me know what you think. -

Thanks for any comments or suggestions.

RE: Component texture Help junkie fix
Thank you Casca. The first option is better in this case, if I'm not wrong still represent two variations using two materials for many component instances.
-
RE: Component copies with different materials or mapping
Thank you both, good ideas. Tig first idea will work on my rectangular geometry but not on rafter or others, the second will also help but wanted to use as little components as possible or more than one texture .
Sorry to open another thread I though... :% Casca thank you for that nice video can we move it here in order to delete the other thread?
Will be possible a plugin which mix groups and component behaviour with capacity to modify geometry in all instances but able to texture independently?
Maybe one day me too will stop trying to bite my own tail! -
RE: Component copies with different materials or mapping
well the initial intention to use component was to keep file size small but yes I was talking about texturing component instances without obvious patterns, you menthion about axis but dont really understand your suggestion.
-
RE: Component copies with different materials or mapping
I'm affraid I don't get what you say.It looks like I'm try to bite my own tail! at the end of the day groups vs components doesnt make much different when it comes to file size?

Component texture Help junkie fix
Hi, I'm doing the Pinecote pavillion but this time tried to be a bit 'clever' by scaling the same component for all columns and beams. How to apply a wood texture avoiding obvious repeating pattern? have tried uvtools to uvlayout but doesn't open components, wont like to use Texturerandomizer cause I think will defeat the purpose (keep file size small)
I am about to explode everything jajaja but will like a 'fix' is possible. I know similar issue has raised but not good solution.

RE: Component copies with different materials or mapping
Thank you Casca, how about if I got one component representing 30 wooden colums and beams? what will be the best/easy way to texture without repeating pattern?
-
RE: Component copies with different materials or mapping
Hi,you could use something like texture ramdomizer or a external UV mapping tool but I guess is not what you want. If one could at least move the texture in just one component!
