micione, thanks for the linked...
yes this does work, but it's an imperial version... but i work in France, so metric needed... how do I get it to point to the metric lumber size file that came with the metric version ?
thanks

Quick Selection
Hi all, quick question:
Has anyone else tried to install "quickselection.rb" by D Bur in SU2014 ?
I put it in the correct plugin folder, I get no error message on starting SU2014, yet it just doesn't show up in the Edit menu (works fine in SU2013) ? And since I have no idea how to invoke it via a ruby console command, I can't force it to run to see if it comes up with an error code...
Thanks if anyone has any ideas...Best,

RE: SU 2014 and Plugins
Tig
Once again, thanks for saving the day..
I was also thinking the accent had something to do with the problem & have created a user account called patrick and SU automatically created a plugins folder...C:\Documents and Settings\Patrick\Application Data\SketchUp\SketchUp 2014\SketchUp\Plugins
I popped my plugins in there & zoom, all is well, no more ruby console messages on startup !
Makes me think the Trimble crew might like to take a closer look at their code...
What would be best, is if there were a preference item where like in other cad programs the user can define the support file paths. In the office we put our plot config files for bricscad on the server and point all instances of brics/autocad to that.
Anyhow, many thanks
best,
Patrick

RE: SU 2014 and Plugins
Hello all, I have read all this as I'm perplexed...
I have just reinstalled SU2014fr on a PC with windows XP,
I downloaded the Sketchucation Tools plugin (v2.5.1)
and "installed" it from within SU2014, restarted SU2014 & got this Rubyconsole message:Erreur de chargement du fichier !SketchUcation_loader.rb
Error: #<NameError: uninitialized constant SCF::TOOLSS>
C:/Documents and Settings/Propriétaire/Application Data/SketchUp/SketchUp 2014/SketchUp/Plugins/!SketchUcation_loader.rb:181:in<module:SCF>' C:/Documents and Settings/Propriétaire/Application Data/SketchUp/SketchUp 2014/SketchUp/Plugins/!SketchUcation_loader.rb:16:in
<top (required)>'Can anyone help ?
I have 2014 working fine on a machine with Vista, had no real difficulties migrating, but I need this XP setup to work too...
I suspect that there is some folder missing someplace, but can't track it down...
Thanks,
-
RE: SketchUp 2013 Maintenance Release 1
yup, my bad. actually, I did update most plugins and unloaded a whole bunch I never used... but it is odd that friday, before M, I was doing fine, hého, mine is not to reason why !
BTW 2013 is otherwise a great improvement & Layout has become usable without driving me back to smoking ! (the previous versions were so slow that I nearly started nicotine again & went back to bricscad instead) & no, I still have the same machine as before, so i imagine that on a super-duper machine with a vavavoom graphics card it would be even better.thanks
-
RE: SketchUp 2013 Maintenance Release 1
ok, found the culprit... it was an outdated version of TIGs sectioncutface... upgraded to v3.7 of said plugin and all is working again.. thanks folks. (and M is for merde when things start messing up ! )
-
RE: SketchUp 2013 Maintenance Release 1
ok, for info, windows vista SP 2 and as I said, all worked fine until M
-
RE: SketchUp 2013 Maintenance Release 1
no V ray... it all worked fine until applying M release... (no plugin changes)
-
RE: SketchUp 2013 Maintenance Release 1
oops, since applying the M release, practically every scene tab update results in a bug spalt !
so M is for merde ?

RE: A new home for SketchUp
I am intrigued by this new development in Sketchup history... i have been a user for a while now & it has become a core tool for my architecture business.
I have also used the tool as a teaching support for groups of young people in social reinsertion programs.
In both contexts it has been so valuable for several reasons: (not in order of priority)
1 - ease of initial learning
2 - cost, whether free for the students, or a reasonable price for a very small architecture outfit in the Pro version.
3 - ease of capture of google earth terrain
4 -the wonderfully rich plugins available from an extremely talented & dedicated community.Like so many of others that I have read on various blogs & forums, we all seem to share worries on these (& other) core principals of what makes sketchup so special.
I have been 3d modelling since about 1988 (yes, on a mac with no hard-drive) when i used the then revolutionary modelshop software from paracomp (later bought by macromedia) which was a precursor to sketchup in so many ways: A no frills, easy to learn, intuitive & value for money product... & we all know what happened when it got bought by macromedia... RIP.
I, like so many million other users out there rely on Sketchup to remain accessible to ordinary folks who do not want & cannot afford Autodesk et al. & their huge unwieldy products which are surely useful for corporate architecture/engineering... but akin to killing a fly with a bazooka when it comes to small & medium size bespoke buildings... We don't need, or want full BIM, just reliable easy software to quickly sketch-up & work up projects that we can communicate to clients who do not understand working drawings !
A bonus would be easy extraction of 2d drawings for contractors, but only if that does NOT involve a huge price hike & loss of ease of use ! BTW the current Layout is sooooo like pedalling in molasses that it is next to hopeless (yes, I have tried to give it the benefit of the doubt, but I just can't get it to be smooth enough, so short of taking up smoking again, I gave up...)So ? The real question is, does Trimble care about us small users, or are they only interested in their corporate clients to the extent that they will let sketchup share the same fate as modelshop ?
Let's hope the core team of developers really will be allowed to keep some freedom & not be marshalled into the big-boy rigid world of BIM bam boom & large price-tag licence programs... good luck guys, 'cos i think you'll need it to keep the faith !

RE: Sketchup to bricscad *.dwg & back
Jean
yes, you are right, infact SU obvioulsy cretaes poly meshes when it exports to *dwg... maybe there is a mesh to 'solid' (acis) converter somewhere... ? if i find it, i'll post back here
Merci en tous les cas
Paddy

Sketchup to bricscad *.dwg & back
I tested this:
1 - Created in SketchUp some 'solid groups' & then transferd (exported) from sketchup a dxf or dwg file. Then, when it was opened in Bricscad, these 'solid groups' from SU are interpreted as groups consisting of poymesh faces and not as solid objetcs... (I don't have autocrade, so I don't know if this happens in their heavy software)
2 - however, when one creates with dmextrude or dmpushpull some solid entities in Bricscad, and import them into SU they are correctly interpreted as 'solid groups'So, who's translators are messing up ?? The thing is it would be great to be able to open a SU model in B'cad in order to do all kinds of drafting stuff that is nigh impossible in Layout as it's soooooo slow
Anyone have any ideas ?

Sketchup to OpenSim ?
hello folks, not sure that this is the right rubrique, but I have a question:
Can anyone help out on how to get a sketchup model as a mesh onto a friend's grid in OpenSim (like 2nd life) as the viewers that support mesh import (2nd life v3 & Kirsten's) do not seem to be able to be forced to find the ip address of the friend's grid which is hosted on another mate's serveur grrrr & lovely viewers like Hippo won't do mesh... any ideas ???

RE: Yaml schpamel
Thanks guys for the advice: I did search in my plugin folder & couldn't find the offending yaml.rb...
Not sure I have the patience/time right now to hunt further, it's not a major hassle: However, if i do find out, i will post the answer here !I actually need to spend some time working out how to get a sketchup model as a mesh onto a friend's grid in OpenSim (like 2nd life) as the viewers that support mesh import (2nd life v3 & Kirsten's) do not seem to be able to be forced to find the ip address of the friend's grid which is hosted on another mate's serveur grrrr & lovely viewers like hippo won't do mesh... hého, such is life, real life

RE: Yaml schpamel
Dave, I also wonder what plugin it is that wants this :-s I have manually downloaded yaml.rb & tried putting it in plugin folder: nothing doing 'cos it then wanted other files that are in the yaml directory in the ruby folder i showed in my 1st post... so i tried putting the whole kaboodle in the plugins directory: still not happy as it still looked for the files that were just there under it's nose...
It doesnt really matter, but I guess I would have to chuck out the plugins 1 by 1 until it stopped, but that would take ages, so i guess i'll just live with it...
thanks anyway
