    • RE: Trajan's markets, Rome

One thing that I (and others working on Roman buildings) would very much like is to get hold of some reasonably convincing figures to use for statues - men in togas, really, for the sort of places I'm making. Does anyone happen to know where such things can be found, please? A while ago I found a really lovely Minerva on the SketchUp forums, and if there's any more where she came from that would be wonderful.

      Dear Csaba,

thank you! I'm glad you like the model. I'm an academic, a Roman historian in Oxford. I'm not an archaeologist, but do use archaeological as well as literary and epigraphic material, so 'Classicist' seems about right. I find these models useful for my own research (which at the moment is on public libraries in the Roman world) and for teaching. I'm glad to have found some like-minded people on this forum.

      All best wishes,

      Matthew.

      Here are the close-ups.
I'm not so happy about the way the brick texture obviously repeats, but I do want to use this image: it's a picture I took of the brickwork of the building itself, so it's good to use for accuracy .

Thank you, all, for your kind remarks. I'm glad you like these, and especially pleased that Lewis approves of what I've done to his model!
Kelly - thanks for your comments. I'm afraid I'm new here and more-or-less new to the whole world of online forums; I hadn't even noticed that you can add profile data to describe yourself! I hope I've now fixed that (and I thought I'd put this in the gallery - not sure how that happened).
I did all the modelling in SU and then exported it as .3DS to Cinema4D, where I did the renders and a couple of nice flyby movies.
Some close-ups are on the way.

Here are some renders from a little project I put together as an entry for a virtual design contest at Lumberjocks woodworking website http://lumberjocks.com. The contest was to get woodworkers to use or sharpen their skills with Sketchup. Here is a link to my entry on the site http://lumberjocks.com/jocks/Brad_Nailor/blog/2002, and to all the enrtys http://lumberjocks.com/blogs/tag/challenge03.
I Modeled the table in Sketchup, and rendered it with Podium 1.41.

    • Trajan's markets, Rome

Lewis Wadsworth kindly let me use his model of Trajan's forum and markets in Rome. I've aded some details and textures. As can be seen in the first image, the walls of the row of rooms on the upper storey of the great hemicycle now only survive up to about knee height, so in the subsequent images I've added a reconstruction of this level. It draws on elements from the lower level and tries to follow the architects' concern to achieve an interplay of solid and void to break up the vertical surfaces of the complex.

I'm also not the biggest hockey fan out there, but I do know that the Flames are better than the Canucks in every way (bahahahaha). Especially because of the Red Mile, and Flames girls (neither of which I'll link to, because they are chalk full of topless women, just look it up)

Hahaha, yeah I'm not a big hockey fan either, I just figured it was the obilgatory post for me to make when confronted with someone from Calgary. I'm sure you noticed but, "yay" and "booooo" aren't really typical angry hockey rhetoric πŸ˜† .

I just thought I'd say, I have the exact same hairstyle as Tina, with the similar level of thickness bit shorter, but same colour. Please note I am indeed a dude.

      So heres my deal,

      20 years old, 5'9" 155 lbs

during the week I have probably 2 beers with dinner and on weekends, it can get up to around 20 beers/hiballs (sometimes more, often less).

I eat whatever I feel like, pizza, hamburgers, perogies, subs/sandwiches etc.

I excersize around 3 times a week (20-70km on my bike each time depending on how much time I have)

I have started to get a little chubby (big surprise, I know lol) and my question is this, how can I keep my weight down (I'd like to be around 150 lean, or 160 muscled) without a lot of change, coupled with the fact that I cannot cook, at all.

any suggestions? I know I should up the excersize a bit, and I've got a gym membership starting next week, but I need some motivation to go, or I just know I'll never make it...

I'm not to knowledgable on the subject, but I'd have to say mix up yor exercise routine a bit. I used to do nothing but jog and swim with similar eating habits to you and guess what happened, I ended up having really well muscled legs and decent arms, but I was fatening up in the middle. Now I try to do 50 pushups/sittups(25 of each in the morning/ 25 before bed) a day and some weights maybe 3 times a week, seems to be fixing things up.

Oh didn't read the last part of your post, well I find that it just becomes part of your routine, just as regular as brushing your teeth(I'm really bad at brushing my teeth twice everyday lol). If you are planning on going to the gym however, find a buddy to go with you.

I found cutting out the subway from my diet wasen't an option, cold cut trios = to delicious give to me now rawr! Of course even when you eat bad you can make good choices, get a water instead of a pop, if you don't want to spend $ on a bottled water just ask for a glass. Ask yourself do you really need to have chips with that sandwhich, yes you do must have delicious crunch with sand... ahem please ignore that the point is theres ways to avoid calories even when eating fast food, also try sushi or organic restaurants for a change some of the stuff is actually pretty delicious, especially sushi πŸ˜›.

Sigh @ being concerned with this stuff when I'm not even 17 yet, shoulda played more team sports lawls.

You describe a struggle that has been going on for many years Gully. You are treading on very soft feet, for those in the battle have contributed some of the most profound works.

I think you need to explain how intellect is connected to the proccess of creation and what is "intellectual integrity" to help us understand your view.

      mh,

I'm not going to spend much time on this, since, frankly, I don't really know what you're trying to say. Is the struggle to which you refer supposed to be between artistic expression and factual accuracy? Are you saying that artists' feet are soft? What does that mean? What battle?

You ask how intellect is connected to creation? Are you serious? If our buildings and bridges are to stand rather than collapsing, if airplanes are to fly and ships to float, if prose and poetry are to inspire and edify rather than spew forth as inane gibberish, intellect and creativity must be partners, not adversaries. What possible creative endeavor can succeed without intellect behind it? You must know your tools, know your medium, and know your audience, or, as an artist, you must stand paralyzed, silent, and helpless.

Insofar as the present case is concerned, with the model of the model of the solar system, presumably the objective here is to teach. So to teachers, I would say the same thing that Hippocrates said to physicians: first, do no harm. If you are going to teach, do not misinform.

Are you still unclear regarding my view?

Gully, quit being such a wet blanket. I know engineers HAVE to be precise, but that doesn't apply to all other fields of life.

Well, Juju, I think one of the most wonderful and fascinating things about our universe is how big it is and how small we are.

I think kids deserve to be enlightened about how magnificent the universe is, not to be misinformed because of the vanity of adults who wish to exercise their artistic license at the expense of intellectual integrity.

...I wouldn't find myself measuring the distance from the earth to the sun and trying to figure out the scales just to see if they are off.

        todamgood,

That's really very nice, but we're not talking about this model being just slightly or subtlely out of scale--so that you'd have to measure it to determine whether it's accurate. It's really way, way off.

Judging by the image, let's say that the Earth, the green ball, is about two feet in diameter. At that scale, the Sun would be over 218 feet in diameter and would be almost four-and-a-half miles away. At that same scale, Pluto would be 4.33 inches in diameter and 175 miles from the sun.

So please, let's not mistake grossly inaccurate and unscientific misinformation, which could seriously confuse both children and adults, for "artistic license." I would like to think that we can express ourselves artistically without plunging ourselves back into the Dark Ages academically.

jessalba, please do not be discouraged by this; make it a challenge to push both your artistic and intellectual skills to the next level.

I think my problem with this type of model is the inaccuracy... while it's beautiful... in reality would not the planets be on the other side of the park?

I don't wish to be a wet blanket, but not only are the sizes of the planets and their distances from the sun wildly out of scale, they're also out of plane. The ecliptic plane, which contains the orbits of the planets, passes through the sun.

its really not that bad u know....
when rendering u must make sure that the faces are in the right direction.... to do that switch to monochromatic view and chk for the blue colour and simply reverse it! πŸ˜‰ of cozin the new Su2Kt ver 3.0 this shouldn't be a problem....
another thing is the Glass.... make sure u model it with single faces and rename the material with TG_XXX... where xxx can be any name... this will automatically enable the Thin Glass shader on the glass material once imported into KT... there are a whole lots of other features within the Su2KT 3.0....
make sure u download the getting started tutorial from the KT repository.. its especially meant for the SU user...
      http://www.kerkythea.net/joomla/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=42&func=startdown&id=35

another thing... in KT if ur rendering an outdoor exterior scene lit only by the sun u could use PPT (Progressive Path Tracing) for realistic results... it might look grainy at first but after a few passes it should clear up!

regarding the scene.. imagine rendering as takin a photo.. unless u have helicopter access or unless u get access to the terrace of a nearby high rise building i dont think u can take that shot in real life! πŸ˜‰ so how bout lowering the cam to the human eye level??
also lose the 2d trees.. model some ground features, pavements, street lights, add some cars.. plaay with light and shadows...

join the forum at the KT website... much more seasoned users can help u!
      have fun!

Hey thanks a lot for the information. I have downloaded that getting started guide, and i'm going to mess around with kerkeytea now
If i have a good render then i will post it here.
