    • Codecomply.com - Building Code Automation - IBC SketchUp Tea

      SketchUp Team,
I noticed a few of your members had comments about http://www.codecomply.com and I thought I would respond. The website automates many of the requirements for the building code. It has many of the exceptions included in the calculations. You can think of it as "TurboTax for the International Building Code". The software is not perfect but I believe I can account for any situation the Building Code may throw at me. Give it a test run on your next IBC report and let me know your thoughts. It should save you hours AND it is free!

    • RE: CS3 and SketchUp

I've been using CS3 Extended since day one of availability...I pre-ordered it after playing with the beta.

I have found the enhanced Vanishing Point capabilities (for applying textures and scaling inserted images into existing 2D exports from SU) and the Smart Objects (think: Photoshop components or blocks) much more useful than the "3D layer" capabilities, however. The 3D layer function is limited by it's inability to generate real (or real-looking) shadows and light sources...you can only choose the general direction of light, and then what you get is very much like shading in SketchUp.

There is some decent video editing capability in PS 3 Extended. I'm very much looking forward to the next animation task, so I can give this a shot. Unfortunately, like most architects I mainly deal with still images, so it just hasn't been terribly useful so far.

The big problem with CS3? In general this release has many unresolvable issues with printing (just do a web search to see exactly how many people are unhappy about that). Where I could simply hit "print" in previous versions of PS and send the image to a color or BW laser writer with some assurance that I would get on paper something like I saw on the screen, with CS3 that is not usually the case...I'll get a coarse-screened mess, no matter how much tweaking I do of the driver settings. To get a decent print, first I must export my PS file as a Photoshop PDF and from Acrobat print that. Quite a nuisance...I truly envy those rare individuals who lucked out with printers or printing systems that worked "out of the box" with Photoshop.

    • SU for Dummies

have you guys seen aidan chopra's Google's Sketchup for Dummies ? i have just received it by mail and had only a quick look at it but it was easy to see that it is a book well done, full of illustrated tips. my first impression was that even SU veterans would benefit from it. i hope i still feel that way after going through it.

perhaps we should somehow call some attention to it in the newbie forum.

They are going to start construction in a week or two, so here is the wiki

Should be a pretty neat looking building when its all said and done

Pretty neat support system inside it too! All of the floor slabs are suspended from the exterior structure, which compresses the whole building because of the shape, pretty neat trick of architecture...

the same firm is putting a building up here in Calgary called the Bow, its supposed to be 59 storeys or some such

    • RE: Basic illustration app needed

      Edson,

When you say "illustration," I infer you want something that's vector-based rather than raster-based (that is, more like Adobe Illustrator than PhotoShop). I also think you should have something with a bit more horsepower than bare bones basic, although not necessarily top-of-the line.

Therefore, I recommend either CorelDraw Essentials (a repackaging of CorelDraw 9, arguably the best version ever) or Xara Extreme, which is similar to CorelDraw in many ways but has a few outstanding features that Corel doesn't, although Corel has a few that Xara doesn't. They are both superb programs, both capable of combining bitmaps with vectors, and both a bargain at around $70 - $80 USD.
