Good to see that it have been helpfull !

The automatic translation is a really good idea (in fact, I've never really try this kind of tools before...😳 ).

In fact, after some test, the google translation is better, and there are not that much big mistakes or nonsense (just when I'm going off topic...).

      http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=fr&ie=UTF-8&u=www.wip-archi.com&sl=auto&tl=en&history_state0=

For instance, I've quickly check the Vray lessons, and it works quite well... give it a try...

      Trillium,

In fact, it's possible to compare every renderers, because, finally, they're all able to achieve the same result (more or less). The main question his, in fact, how easy and how efficient will it be to create this picture, with this one or this one...

      • Vray is well inserted into sketchup, and with some efficient presets, you can have a really good result. For example, and that's more than useful for an Architect, making a quick clay render to test a space is one of the most intersting thing with Vray. In addition, view point, face me component, layers are kept just the same than in sketchup, and so you can, for example, add the sketchup edges over the render easily.
When it came to the material edition, it's a bit more tricky... In fact, the link between Vray mat and sketchup one is not always well done, and it require more skills to set up well their properties.

      • Artlantis is a complete independent application, and even if the link with sketchup is well done, you're not working directly inside it. All layer setting disappear, all face me component does not move, the focal angles are not matching... so you have to set up things by yourself. But when you begin to adjust materials or light, it's really easy and clear, and you can see the effect immediately. In addition, the render engine is one of the fastest you can find...

So, I think, for someone not specially familiar with 3D rendering (like architects...), Vray is really quick and efficient for concept renders, quick test, and a wide range of original effect (by combining it with the Sketchup styles) and Artlantis is better for a final picture(with more realistic effect in materials).

If you are interested, you can find a tutorial in English for Artlantis here http://www.wip-archi.com/wip-visualiser/artlantis/le%C3%A7on-1-les-bases/

Thanks Chris... and by the way,I think (but it's not original in fact) that you're doing a really amazing job on loft, bending, and others. In addition, you're almost on every post, responding to everyone, and that's great!

So,I don't want to change this ruby particularly, it's just that a ruby like this one seems to be just what we need for... In fact, after checking in the .rb, the one I'm working with have been created by TIG, so I should maybe contact him directly...

      he oui, well done !

    • [REQ / IDEA] For a new section tool

[It's about visual sections, not booleans]

...Again, I throw here an idea that I have since a long time, not knowing if there is a way to make anything about it with a Ruby script, but it's worth a try...

Sketchup owns a really useful (and finally rather original) section tool.

      Normal.jpg Section Plan.jpg

The thing is that it is always a bit too radical (basically it's an infinite plan). So, to reduce the effect, or have a more precise cut, it's necessary to combine it with groups, but that's not so easy to do cleanly with huge or complex models.

      Section+Group.jpg
What I'm looking for here is something that will be able to change the way the sections are handle, in order to have, mainly, a kind of Section Box, that could look like that :

      Section Box.jpg Or SectionBox_2.jpg

      So, any chance...?

Is there a way to know if someone (but I don't want to force anyone of course...) will have time (or is interested, at least...) to make modifications to 'Global_Material_Change.rb' (it seems the easiest way to do it finally), in order to have a script able to do what we're looking for ?

    • [Tutorial] To take a first step in Artlantis, easily!

      Title.jpg
I have to face (sadly..) the fact that none of you will soon learn French...So I must adapt my tutorials if I want to be a bit helpful around here.

If you're interested (or just curious) you can take a look at this new page of my website http://www.wip-archi.com/wip-visualiser/artlantis/le%C3%A7on-1-les-bases/, where you will be able to download the tutorial [ENG]TutoWip_Atl_Basis. Before downloading you can take a look at the slideshow just below, which present the French version, and may help you to see what is it about.

It's important to precise that the tutorial aims architects or students who are not confident with the idea of rendering...

Hope it will be useful, and all comments are greatly welcome !

Ps: sorry for translation mistakes, but without some, it can not have been done by a French...

Ah guys...I know I know...I should translate it , but I already have barely time to write and create things to update it in French...And I really have a lot of things to say, so, it will come, be patient... Soon (let say some days if everything is fine..) there will be a basic Artlantis training course, to diversify the offer!

It's good to see your interest, it give more motivation to take time for it...

And by the way, at least, I've made a translated version of the Vray Presets an lights:

    • RE: [Request] 'Clever Clay' mode

      Gaieus,

I know about Kerkythea, I'm also working with it... but what I'm looking for is something that works inside sketchup, without regards for the render apps use afterward.

If it change well the materials, then you can use your model in Vray, Kerkythea, Artlantis, or any other, just as a classic model.

And after thomthom answer, I think that this plugin will be destructive : save your model, turn it into clay with transparency, render it, and go back to the previous save ( or just undo if it's possible) to continue working on it.

    • RE: [Request] 'Clever Clay' mode

After reflexion, there is maybe two main way to do it:

      • A global change of all the material, by erasing the old ones and replacing them by the new materials ( just like global material changer does), and the script may use something like : if transparency level = 100 , pick one (it does not have to be always grey in fact), and if transparency < 100 (or maybe this one could be enter by hand, so the semi transparent material (80/90 % of transparency for example) could be also change to opaque in the same operation ) pick another one.
This method will be destructive, but Chris idea is maybe a good solution to avoid it.

_ A global change of all material by only one, directly, but with the respective material transparency levels.

I don't know which one will be the simplest to code, and which one will be the quickest to run in the end...

If it work kinda like grey scale, there will be no problem with Vray, because it works just fine in that case (a grey model is render grey by Vray). And if its a global change of material it will also work, because Vray will use the last material present on the geometry... so normally that's not an issue.

    • RE: [Plugin] UV Toolkit

I don't know if my last request was clear, in fact... What I'm trying to say (but maybe you get it) is modify your tool to make it able to be active all the time (or not), so the simple fact of applying a texture on a face (back, front, whatever...) will automaticly apply it on the other side (something that sketchup does not do by itself...)

      Hi Remus,

Thanks!... but I know absolutely nothing in Ruby scripting... My works consist basically in using them as well as possible, and waiting for new one to be made by clever coders...
That's why I post this request, if someone is interested and have time to do it, it will help me greatly.

The greyscale.rb that you send me is the original one, there is no change in the script that may do what I'm looking for, right?

    • RE: [Plugin] UV Toolkit

Thank you so much! this plugin is really great and make things soo easy (aahh, curve walkways with precise repetition all along the track of the same stone tile...)

By the way,I just have two questions:

      • Is it possible to add a shortcut to your UV tools in the right click menu ? that will improve greatly the workflow.
      • Is there a way to add an option 'automatic' to your 'front face to back face'. It could be really good to have such a switch, so all the texture add when it's 'on' will automatically cover both sides, and with the same UV (it should work in the same time from front to back and back to front with the option on).

    • [Request] 'Clever Clay' mode

      Hi,

I had a long list of imaginary / dreamed plugins, but it's reducing fast this days, due to your hard work... But there are still some interesting ones not already done, so I dare post a request!

As a lot of architect, I'm really fond of a clay render style, directly whitin sketchup or for a picture. Solutions exists, for example in Vray, to overwrite all the material before the calculation, but it also kill, logically, all transparency parameters.

So, what I'm looking for is a plugin (let's call it 'clever clay' mode...) that will be able to overwrite in one operation all the material, but keeping the transparency information (for example by creating 2 new materials, one simple gray for all the solids, and one transparent for the rest). Here are some picts to illustrate the idea.

      Normal Render
      Classic Clay Render
'Clever Clay' Render (the glass is here a bit too transparent, so quite invisible...)

In fact, there is already scripts able to do things close to what I'm looking for, and I think minor modification can make the trick...
For example Global material changer works really fine, but on a complex model it's a bit hard, and long, to select all the materials one by one, regarding to their nature, transparent or not. There is maybe a way to adapt it...
The way Grey Scale works is also interesting in term of interface (a simple switch), but in that case the only information modify is the color range, not the texture.
Finally, the result should be a mix between hidden line and monochrome mode in Sketchup.

For presenting quickly a project, with selected informations, such a ruby will be really great, allowing to show only the effect of the sun light going t for example.

Hope it will inspire you !

    • RE: For all those who don't take a look on Ruby discussions...

      Thanks Silver Shadow!

Yes, something between hand style and photorealistic is what I'm looking for on those ones... The renders that I've post so far are not final presentation pictures, but just tests, to see the effect of a technic on a space ( clay model, line overlay, etc...).

I've begin to use Vray not really long ago, so it's necessary to do a lot of this kind of renders to find exactly how to get to a precise result...

Here are two other tests of bump / displacement for the first one and Photoshop postprocess for the second (I know, the texture is too repetitive on the ceiling...but it s hard to fix with this kind of material)
