I thought there was a way to subdivide (or whatever its called) to divide something into equal sections, or does that only work on lines?

I dont know how to do it myself as I keep forgetting to look it up ive seen it before but i have to find time to try it myself a couple times so i remember it.

    • RE: Adding thickness to a curved surface

Wow I feel like I finally contributed on here after all this time!

But, it may have some issues with complex shapes for example, but I can only think of a few cases offhand where it "might" not work. Oh, and thanks for the tip to get rid of those stupid small faces not being present when using follow me. I cant believe i didnt think to just scale everything up alot while working.

The problem I have now is finding time to do stuff, i pretty much work 7 days a week now. The only things I have time to do now are models of desks and tables and stuff that Ive been wanting to physically make. Its just too bad that I dont have time to head out to use my Grandpas woodshop or Id have me a really nice computer desk I think.

As far as creating 1/8th of a sphere goes i think you can get away with using the follow me, then deleting a bunch of extra geometry. The way I do it though is make a half a sphere then draw a couple faces through it to bisect it twice. That leaves me with one fourth of half a sphere, which is the 1/8th sphere you were talking about if im not mistaken.

You can either create the shape in place (which is a hell of a mess) or figure out a method that works for you to keep it aligned while creating the shape at another point. Then just move it into place. The latter isnt too hard.

I think the best you could do is to use the follow me lathe tool.

Maybe you could possibly copy it, scale it up a bit, then align it over the original object, although I dont think this would work in every case.

I should start working in metric.... its so much easier. My problem is I was raised around Carpentry and such so I learned everything in inches.

Anyways, thanks for the tip again Gaieus.

Ah, but that simply resizes the image. the site you linked to simply moves images around when I resize the window, i dont know if thats what you meant to show me or not. This is talking about actually altering the image.
It can take a 1000 px wide image and shorten it to 500 pixels and have it still look like it should without distortion.

By the way, why is this in the components requests forum?
The strangest thing happens when you press play in sketchy physics: All the gumdrops flip upside down, save for the ones on the left of the roof. Then ALL the roof ones fall through the roof. though I know why that happens, I cant figure out why almost all of them invert, and even more so, why not all of them do that.

I really hope this sort of thing catches on, it would work wonders for people using lower resolution displays:

Yeah, I just figured that out actually πŸ˜„
It is indeed a double click, and I think something was causing it to register as a double click.

At any rate, it seems to have stopped now, a fact I am grateful for.
Thanks for the reply at any rate. Now I think I'm off to figure out what was causing it to read any sort of contact with the scroll wheel as a double click.

    • SU acting strange

I started up SU after a couple weeks of not using it and now for some reason or another when I pan or rotate or anything using the mouse and shift button combined (or sometimes when using the actual tools) it gets insanely jumpy and the screen starts moving around erratically.
Has anyone else had this problem? Im about to reinstall SU, but I figured i would share this with you guys to see if im alone in this issue or not.

A specific issue is when I click the middle mouse button (the scroll wheel) it jumps in even intervals moving the camera to the right for each click. This might be the only thing happening and when combined with rotating using the middle mouse and shift it makes for an uncontrollable mess.

**EDIT: It turns out that clicking with the middle mouse centers the view on that point. How do I disable this (it never did it before), because I use the middle wheel to rotate and pan. This means almost every time i release the middle mouse it centers on that point. The only times it doesnt center is when I hold the button for a second or two, and quite frankly I rotate and pan alot faster than that.

The even stranger part is while it certainly does center the view on the point that i click, it only seems to do it 2/3 ish of the time. Not only is it counter productive and annoying based on how I am used to using the program, but it doesnt even consistently act that way.**

It's our first snowfall of the season here. We had a few flurries previously but no real accumulation. Today its snowed maybe 7 to 10 cm so far but the bigger problem is the high winds. There's steady winds of say 40 km/hr with gusts to 80km/hr so the snow is forming drifts.

I have to venture out now and do some grocery shopping. Thankfully my bride had studded snow tires installed on the car last week.

      Regards, Ross

By studded, do you mean the metal studs, or simply the big rubber nubs? The metal ones are illegal here sadly. They make for some good fun on the lakes when ice fishing. Fun of course being that you can tear across the lake at 30+ MPH with no problems.

All the snow is drifting up here too. Normally I like to be outside when it is snowing, but right now the stiff wind pelting me in the face along with decent sized snow made me retreat back to my desk.

      Hey all

I literally just d/l-ed Sketchup a day ago, and so far I've drawn my dorm room with some uploaded components. A draftsmen at the IP mill I'm intern-ing at reccomended it to me. I'm a senior EET student and graphic designer. My modeling skills are relatively limited. the basics of AutoCAD and Pro E. Was really nifty at Bryce3d back in middle and highschool but lately the only computer software i've used period is Multisim and Matlab (dang senor project). so I'm looking to learning all I can.

Welcome to the forums, I am the resident village idiot Masta Squidge. But you can call me Robert, Rob, R.J. or "Hey you" seems to work also.

To be honest though you are probably more advanced than I am at this stuff given your background, so I don't imagine you will have too much trouble. If you want some good tutorial videos go on youtube and look for Aidan Chopra's videos. They were created to go along with his book, Google Sketchup for Dummies, but alone they are very helpful. (And just about everyone else here seems to be amazing with the program no less)

      @woodjoint said:

Yes all of those. I used this joint to join two timbers to form the bottom on the frame I made to hold my tools behind my bench. I didn't have a piece 12 ft. long so I ripped the 7 ft piece of white fir I had and when I did it came off the saw looking like a couple of bananas but they were a perfect match. I was going to use that joint anyway but decided not to try to straighten them out but use them as is. I think it make the piece.

That does look really nice. One of the best tool racks i have ever seen in a persons shop to be honest. Most people just slap a few 2x4 boards together and call it a rack.

It snowed here today to, about 1/4 inch, but it just finished melting... 😒

Since i made this thread we went from no snow sticking to the grass (only the cement and roads and such) to having an inch+ in the backyard. I hope it keeps up all night so I can laugh at everyone moving 15 MPH down the road. Personally when I am driving in the snow I dont do less than 5 under the speed limit, and usually I do exactly the speed limit. With no problems. Its like everyone forgets how to drive in the winter.

    • Need a model....

...of the trunk space of a 96-98 2 door Chevy Cavalier. To be honest I dont NEED it, but it would be nice to mock everything up in SU that I would like to do. It is for a custom subwoofer enclosure that I have been tossing the idea around to build.

I would like to have something on paper to build it from, and I need accurate measurements of the trunk. The measurements are not a problem, as the car is in the driveway, but it isnt so easy to transfer the curved surfaces to paper. In order to make it I would need to make several templates. But if anyone can find a CAD file or something of the sort that I can open in SU to work with, that will save alot of steps.

Thanks in advance for any effort that may or may not be spent! (Im looking too still)

Yeah, we also had snow a couple of days ago but it's never really nice here. As snowing, it also starts melting so the whole winter is mostly just sloppy and muddy. We hardly ever get really nice winters.

Eeeewww, I hate it when that happens. Then again the fact that Im in a good sized city doesnt help either. By the time my birthday rolls around in January all the roads are covered in brown slush all the way to the sidewalks. Its rather unattractive.

Oh, hey anyone who reads this: Is anyone willing to provide a really novice user with some material I can attempt to crowbar into a model?
Everything I start winds up unfinished because I have no real idea in mind. The only thing I actually completed thus far was my desk. I figure if I had something to base it off of it would be real easy to produce a complete model. I never had problems like this in school, in my architecture class I completed all 7 plans and all elevations we had to do for the entire semester in the first month. And had the highest marks on it... But at the same time I had solid direction from the instructor. (Its just too bad I forgot most of what I learned in there)

Then again isnt there a rule about being off topic... if so sorry πŸ˜„

Yaaaaaaaaaaay finally after all these weeks of below freezing nights it is actually snowing. I would take a picture of all the nice pretty snowy evergreen trees out my back window, but all i got is a crappy webcam...

Any of you guys got snow yet? Or are any of you guys in a place where you havent seen snow in years? For that matter, am I the only person in the world who sits at my computer with the window open when its REALLY cold out? (Im really hot for some reason)

There are videos that go with the book, and can be found here for free (and are usually more than enough):

actually i figured out that its just an incredibly strange problem with moire (sp?)

it depends entirely on the position of the camera as to where the odd stretching effect occurs. But for the moment i have the model hung up, i lost a bit of motivation on it for the time being. Ill get it back on my next day off, but right now its work all dang week.
