Having two different materials inside a group shouldn't be a problem. The issue that I discovered with proxies in V-Ray 3.4 is that if you forget to paint just one face somewhere, and leave it with default material, proxy will break and model will be painted without any logic. So, see if you painted everything before you make a proxy, don't leave anything with default material.

Kt is really powerful and almost easy to master and also delivers a good knowledge and understanding of rendering, lighting and material properties and setting that might be useful even in other render engines.
