Group the original shape then subdivide. Your original becomes the proxy and your desired shape is the subsurf. Check Outliner and Layers windows.

When you edit the proxy the subsurf will adjust 'on the fly'. Just use the layers windows to hide and unhide either.

      Thanks!

Oh! Actually I found out how to do after I posted this. LOL. I went to too complicated before that, it is actually quite easy...

But anyway, I am still need help in using SDS tool. I do not know well how to modify the model after I convert the basic shape to an organic shape so everytime I want to make a changes, I have to go back to my original shape then subdivide again. :S

    • Helps needed!

      Hey guys,

I would like to learn how to create a model as shown in the image.

I am able to create the "a" part (irregular shape) but I don't know how to create the tentacle like "b" as I do not know how to sculpture or bend it like this picture.

      Can someone teach me?

As I found that my biggest problem in creating organic shape is I do not know how to create a basic form before I use SDS to smooth it.

And also, I do not know how to sculpture or modify the model after I subdivide it.

      Any great tutorials?

      Thank you very much!

Hi, thanks for replying. What is happening now is basically nothing. I follow exactly the instruction but just nothing happen. No change to the geometry, no iteration window etc. Haha.

Erm it probably because I am using the school computer which I don't have the admin right to install anything onto the computer. The installation might not be done properly through the Installer. I copied and paste other plugin directly to the plugin folder... they are all working fine. Probably that's the reason. Otherwise I really can't think of any reason. 😞

That's likely what's causing the problem. If you don't have admin rights the installation won't include required changes in the registry -- i.e. "permissions". Copying and pasting won't work -- would have to check with Whaat. Why don't you ask the administrator to install it for you and go from there.

      Hi,

Ya. I think that's the problem. I am not sure if I can get the admin for help. :S It's all right. THANKS FOR ALL THE HELPS GUYS! you all are really helpful πŸ˜„

      Hi,

I know this is strange but I don't know why.

I have installed this tool (15 days trial) and when I was trying to use the subdivide and smooth tool, it failed.

There is no Iterations to be set and the geometry doesn't turn into mesh like what shown in video.

      Any idea? Thanks!

My first question would be is it working though?

In order to see the mesh you have to turn on hidden geometry (Top menu selection: View --> Hidden Geometry). Then:

**1. Select the group containing your proxy geometry.

      1. Click on "Subdivide and Smooth" which will generate a default 1 iteration.

      2. Now, go back and double click on that same group and a small "Settings" window should pop up where you can set:

      a. Iterations from 1 to 4.
      b. Auto-update option checkbox.**

      Hope that helps.

Make sure you are either first selecting faces or are selecting a group or component that contains faces (not nested groups and components)

Also, please check for error messages in the Ruby Console (Window->Ruby Console)

      Thanks!

Yes. I did select faces or a group. 😞 What is nested groups?

I draw a square, pull it up and group it, that's all. It should at least turns the cube into a sphere I guess?

      Thanks for replying.

Hmm... once I delete the initial shape I can't edit the shape anymore right (for the middle picture)? For e.g. to add face etc.

    • Questions: Subdivide and Smooth

      Hey guys,

I am having some problems when using Subdivide and Smooth plugin.

Please refer to the picture attached.

As shown, the most left hand side is the original shape I created and I want to use S&S to smooth it.

So, after I used S&S to smooth it, I manage to get the shape that I want, and in this case, it's a nice bun shape.
BUT! the lines (edges) from the original shape are remain! How could I delete them so I can have just the bun shape?

Then, another problem. I intersect my model with another model. And as you can see from the most right hand side picture, MORE LINES appear! and I have no idea why. The whole model become very messy right now. I am able to delete some of the lines using Eraser but it takes me very long time to do that.

      Can you tell me:

      1. How to get rid of the lines of original shape for the middle model?
      2. What might go wrong during the process for the intersect part?

      Thanks! Your helps are appreciated!

    • RE: Burning questions

      Hi,

The model that I want to create would be something like in the picture. The sheet comes with waves i.e. it is not flat sheet. It is enclosed.

The main problem now is to connect the sheets to the bun in the middle. I could intersect two models but I couldn't delete the extra part of the sheet from inside of the bun.

As you can see from another picture, eventually I want the "bun" to be continuous connected with the "sheet". Right now I can't get rid of the part inside of the model, even that I have intersect two of them.what i want to create

    • Burning questions

      Hey guys,

I need to create some complex organic shapes but I am not sure if it is achievable using SU.

Here are what I would like to do:

      1. First create a "bun shape", the bun has to be enclosed, and there is another smaller bun inside it. i.e. when I cross section the model, you will see two layers - this represents a double membrane nucleus (yes, cell nucleus. πŸ˜„

      2. I will need to create several "sheet" - these sheets has to be enclosed too. the sheet has rounded but not sharp corner - something like you smash a ball into a pie but not in perfect circular shape. The sheet is not a total flat sheet but with certain curvature or waves. It can be smaller at one end but bigger at another end, however the lumen of the sheet is always constant.

      3. These several sheets have to be connected to the bun created in one, but only connected with the first layer (outer bun). The connection can be done in anyway. It can be connected on the top, side, bottom of the bun. since the bun has a rounded face.

I have tried using SDS to create both bun and sheet, but when it comes to connect them together, I get confused. I couldn't delete the extra part of the sheet from inside of the bun, after i intersect them. And, the model that created by SDS has too many lines, how to get rid of them? For, e.g.: i create a rectangle and subdivide it into a ball shape, but the rectangular edges remain there, how to get rid of them but yet I can modify the model still like add new faces etc.

Can you guys give me some opinions whether this can be done? Any plugin that you recommend?

      Thanks!

Hi, just to add on. You may want to understand this model as a "chain-linked fence", just that it is 3 ways connected and the sizes of each hexagon is not in equal. Thanks!

      Hi,

Thanks for your quick reply. I modified the picture a little.

As you can see, I want to make the edges become tubes. The faces should be deleted, which mean hollow eventually. Ultimately it will become like a piece of fishnet lying on the floor.

I hope I have made myself clearer this time.

Really appreciate for all the helps given. Thanks! πŸ˜„

    • Question: how to create a 3 way connected net

      Hi,

I would like to create a net with 3-ways connected tube (as shown in picture).

I have tried follow me tool but it seems like it can't follow the line that branches out to two different directions.

Can anyone tell me how to do that? Thanks!

    • RE: Helps needed for creating organic shape

      hi,

ya. the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a one big sheet that wrap around nucleus, the structure is complex. the nucleus has double membrane and its outer membrane is continuous from ER, or you can say ER forms the outer layer of the nucleus. what you usually view from the textbook is just a small part, and usually cross section.

haha. ya it's not the right place to talk about biology but you can always look for relevant information in other forums if you are interested.

anyway i am trying to create a cell model using SU for my school project. seriously need some helps from those who are expert in SU. for example, i need to create double membrane for the nucleus. i am able to do that by first creating a bun shape (nucleus shape), using Section to build another smaller "bun" inside, which space around the inner membrane. every organelle that i am creating has to be enclosed, means no open edge.

now my problem is like what i mentioned above, the outer of nuclear membrane is continuous from ER. i need to somehow protude the ER from the nuclear membrane. i am using subdivision and smooth tool to do that and still looking for easier method as it takes me very long time to do that ( i am still not familiar with SU).

i was tried to first creat some ER sheets that connect it to the nucleus model before i use subdivision and smooth tool to close the edge. but the connection of ER to nucleus model doesnt seem well. 😞

anyway, if you happen to use SU to create organic shape like cell, or cell components before, do you mind sharing your experiences here?

      thanks a lot.

and i am wondering can i reverse the action of subdivision and smooth tool, meaning, after i smooth the model out, how to convert it back to its original shape, other than using undo button.

      thanks!
