    • RE: Import Problems

I thought about the resize idea.. the only problem there is exporting back the completed assemblies to tS.. but I can work round that if I have to..

I've tried all the templates I have and it's the same with all of them.
      the scripts I'm using are

      http://sketchuptips.blogspot.com/2006/12/plugin-obj-importer.html
      http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=180&t=19866

both are giving me the same results.. a 78x78x78inch cube is appearing as a 2x2x2inch cube in Sketchup (same with non cubes - all objects are being affected). position's being scaled as well.

      ironically, exporting is working fine.

edit - I tried the imports on a 2nd machine with a fresh install of SU. same results 😞

      update with some more fun...

a cube created in Hexagon with a 6x6x6 size, exported with meters or inches as the scale.... comes in at about .005 meters square.

      erm what?

    • Import Problems

I'm running into a problem that's basically kicking my ass.

I've got 2 OBJ import scripts and both are having problems with importing any object.. they ignore scale.

I found this when I was trying to export pieces of my TARDIS model from trueSpace to Sketchup to work on - Sketchup is great for doing pipework and I'm doing a LOT of pipework on this model.

thing is, things come into Sketchup tiny. at first I thought it was trueSpace's export.. but the OBJ's are coming into Hexagon and Blender at the correct size.

an example with a cube : Exported from trueSpace at a size of 2meters (78.74 inches). Imported into Sketchup at a size of 2 inches.

the same cube imported into Hex and Blender at the size of 2meters, saved them out from Hex and Blender... and they imported into Sketchup at a size of 2 inches....

anyone got any ideas what the problem is?

    • RE: UK Airport Advice

with the underground and luggage, it depends on what time your taking it. but a trick I learnt growing up in London was, avoid the middle of the train. everyone goes to the middle. take the time to walk to the end of the platform and the carriages there have less people in / empty.

but going from London to Heathrow the tube is your best bet anyway. the traffic is murder.

Heathrow to London your best bet is the Underground.
Piccadilly line straight through, no fuss, no muss.

    • How do I precisely postion in 3 axes?

I'm probably being dense and missing this.

I want to place an object precisely in 3 axes. for this question they are - x -.096 Z 1.678 and y -3.301 this matches up on another model I have in trueSpace thats just to large to import into Sketchup. my idea was that by matching the center point of this pipe's face I can then build the next section in Sketchup and export that out to tS.

but, I can't seem to just enter the co-ordinates I need easily. is it really try and position this from the origin and move it axes by axes into place or can I just enter the 3 co-ord's in and bam I'm there?

    • My Mum and Dad's Victorian Terrace

I'm actually a bit nervous to post this here.. but here goes

this is an inprogress model of my parents Victorian Terrace in England. It was built to house workers for the Chatham Dockyards... the House actually has some of the original fittings still in place, Gaslights, gaspipes and 2 beautiful Iron and Marble Fireplaces... (someone had boarded then up we think in the 60's and forgot them.... they still even have the original tiling and firebrick. Dad found them after he bought the house and pulled the boarding away).

so.starting with the Cellar. modeling in SU7 free and rendering in POVRAY. this is from Memory, so the sizes may be a little off.

yes but in this case it's very more easy to manipulate object like this with "double" enable πŸ˜‰

your missing my point. the object he posted was not hollow. it was a solid so doublesided is not needed since he'll have faces you'll never see.

your showing us a hollow object. that's something different.

      double-side faces?

Internal, external so your are sure to have an opaque face!
But that take double time to calculate πŸ˜’

double siding the face makes it opaque from both sides. if you are only viewing from 1 side, you don't need to double side the faces at all.

with a solid that has no requirement for a view from inside that would require a solid view, all you are doing is doubling the polygon count and also with a few applications introducing a zero thickness doublesided polygon.. not good, since they clash and when displayed rendered you end up with 'hatching' as each face try to display at once.

With any manipulation I obtain that πŸ˜‰
As I have SU free version I must use DoublecadXT-Blender-Zbrush

      Seems works fine! β˜€
You must enable "Double" in the Menu Tool / Initialize) for have double-side faces πŸ€“
(click image for zoom 1/1 )

      doublesided faces?

ye gods man. those don't play well with a lot of 3D apps. the method I've shown, using Quads will work with any 3D app that imports OBJ files.

but I'll leave you to your convoluted workflow...

    • RE: Tris to Quads

ok I can see why thats not working for you.

you need to split the faces into four sided polygons.

      here's what I mean.

      http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3550/3539876836_cb8ff1a70f_o.jpg

see how on the right I've split the face into four sided polygons? thats what you need to to. Quads (four sided) are preferable, but if you need to use a Tri (triangle) do so.

you can then use the linked Ruby Script I posted earlier to export the mesh as an OBJ straight into Zbrush with no other programs needed.

..I would try what you said if it were more explicit (I mean, retard proof), I'm not really technical savvy, I'm just trying to model...

      Thanks.

it's simple. I make sure there's no faces with more than 4 sides (3 if I have no choice). that's all.
if there is a face with more than 4 sides I draw in lines to split it down to 4.

simply model with quads and export. when I was trying out Pro, I just exported. now I'm using the free version and the export ruby, thats all I'm doing...

the main thing I think is I don't leave any N-gons... I split them down into Quads before I export...habit from modeling in trueSpace for Poser..
