Well this is interesting, I scaled the snake back down and rendered it again and it now has the same material as all the balls. Altho there us still a section of the snake which looks a different colour altogether.
Head scratching indeed.

Hmm.. well I scaled the snake up until only a small portion of it showed and it does appear to look like steel. But I still don't understand why it wouldn't take on the appearance of steel when its smaller.

I don't think it has rendered a different colour on the balls as it has on the snake. Both the snake and the balls are a mirror-like finish, but because the balls are much greater in size it appears differently to the much smaller snake shape.
The width of the snake isn't too dissimilar to the size of the very small balls and they appear the same as the large ones so why not the snake?
I'll scale the snake up and see if it makes any difference to the finish.
Thanks for adding the person, Maverick. That really is going to be a beefy powerplant. I wish we could have plants like that over here in the UK. When I see all the huge expanses of wasted rooftops out there it just saddens me that we don't utilise them and help our environment.
I've only ever used Podium as a renderer so I can't comment on the others like Kerkythea but I've seen its output and they have been impressive. Altho the free version of Podium does have a limit to the resolution size, it isn't an expensive programme to buy and it is incredibly easy to use and learn. In my opinion it is well worth the money.
I can see why your daughters love Pato. I like his illuminous shoes, was that intentional? The only thing I would say about it is to make his fur a little softer looking. He's a bit prickly at the moment. Not sure I'd want to cuddle up to him at bedtime
Its good for a first attempt though. I still have no idea how to use S&S
I'm guessing that if a computer is specifically designed for gamers then it will be more than capable of dealing with 3D modelling and rendering. Or are they handled in different ways?
Has anyone come across the Alienware computers?

They are certainly.. distinctive to look at but appear to be made especially for the gaming and graphics market.
As I don't really know what makes a good computer I can't tell if these are any good or not
I ought to buy "PC's for Dummies"
Chris, did you get your new computer from a website? If so, could you let me have the address of it please? Sounds like you've got yourself a good one there and is just the kind of thing I'm after.
(This is where Chris says he had to take out a second mortgage to buy it and I start to cry)
I've read this thread with interest but being a computer dunce I have no idea what all these technicalites mean
I want to buy myself a really good computer in the next couple of weeks as I'm hoping to be doing a lot more SU work and rendering in the future and want a machine that is going to keep up with the demand.
Has anyone summarized all this data yet and come up with the definitive spec?
Or could someone advise on the very best computer to get?
I've bought about 4 computers in the past and always end up with ones that are slow . I don't want to make the same mistake this time around. My bank balance won't allow it.
I've been having a mess around with the subdivide and smooth plugin and although I still have no idea how it works, I've come up with a bit of a snake-like shape. I added it to a scene with some stainless steel balls and even though I painted the snake with the same material as the balls and assigned 100% reflectivity to it, it has rendered a different colour. Is there a certain way of assigning colours to an object made with S&S?
That's a great portfolio Richard. Very professional looking. The renders are brilliant with a nice cool style and I even like the design of the architecture.
The only little niggle I have is the transition between the two pieces of music was a bit clunky, but thats hardly important and doesn't spoil a top star presentation.
Absolutely fantastic stuff as always Pete. I especially like the playroom chair. However it looks as though its made of hard plastic. Good for wiping away those accidental 'spills' but maybe not so comfortable to jump around on. Maybe a leather finish would be more appropriate?
Sorry, it doesn't seem right giving criticism to one of the SU masters
Oh and if your after an easy to use rendering programme, you can't get much simpler than Podium which runs inside SU itself. http://www.suplugins.com
It would be interesting to put a person in there somewhere to give it a sense of scale. How big are those panels?
Good images tho
Here is an apartment I've been working on based on a layout I designed for the conversion of an existing factory. I've included the native SU output and an image of the model rendered in Podium.
Hmm, I closed the model, reopened it, did a purge and it exported fine. I guess thats what the problem was.
I've been trying to export my model to a jpeg but each time I try a box tells me its failed. I've never encountered this before and not sure why its doing it now.
Has anybody come across this problem before?
Wow thanks Dylan. That's praise indeed.
I hope to post more in the next day or so. Just trying to get the lighting right on an interior.
I hope you're right, Mike.
That's a great idea, chango. I haven't got anywhere in particular in mind at the moment but once I start looking round a bit more closely I think thats something I would do.
