    • RE: Gaming development

      I have some experience using SketchUp & Unreal, not Unity.
      It could be some sort of collision setting (use the actual mesh of the stairs for collision instead of its boundingbox - this is what I have to manually do in Unreal for stairs) OR increasing some step setting allowing the user to 'climb'.

      Simple google search results in:

    • RE: Substance and Sketchup Workflow

      Thanks for the suggestions. Learning Substance is on my to-do list but I'm reluctant to start learning another complex program because I'm short on time. Went back to AwesomeBump and did some manual tweaking of maps in Gimp.

    • RE: Substance and Sketchup Workflow

      Anyone using Substance ever tried making overlapping wood planks? Something like this? http://www.textures.com/download/woodplanksoverlapping0030/46418
      Can it be done or should I better model it in 3d instead. I would be using the output in Unreal Engine (normal map / ao map / heigth map / roughness map).

    • RE: Texture mapping on wavy form

      maybe try ThomThom's plugins; SUBD($) and QuadFaceTools(free) ? If the mesh is quads, its way more easy to map the texture.
      Also, maybe Wrapr might be a good plugin to watch out for. It should be released sometime in the (near) future...

    • RE: File size differences

      Interesting problem.

      I was able to make the big file 2,8Mb again by doing:

      1. explode the group
      2. use 'show hidden geometry' and select everything (including the invisible edges )
      3. assign a default material to everything -> saves 3Mb
      4. run this ruby code in the ruby console to remove any attribute on any entity (delete the lines with the 'puts' if you dont want to report everything in the Ruby console. -> saves 4 Mb (dont forget to close the Outliner or it will slow down the execution of the code)
      model = Sketchup.active_model
      sel = model.selection

      sel.each {|s|
      	attrdicts = s.attribute_dictionaries
      	if attrdicts
      		attrdicts.each{|d|
      			puts attrdicts,d
      			attrdicts.delete d
      		}

      	end
      }

      I really hope in the voting box people see past their reluctance for Hillary and see she has a ton of experience for the job where the other candidate totally has not. We don't need another cowboy in charge of a super power.

      Hi,

      It's in testing. The release candidate is getting final touches.
      We will be looking for more PC only testers well versed in unwrapping.
      If your interested mention it here.

      If you still need a tester, count me in. Experienced in unwrapping uv's since 3ds-dos (for real-time purposes). I'm very interested to see if it can assist in the process of getting stuff from SU to Unreal without having to go through Blender (2nd uv channel).

      Exploring Ruby is what changed it all for me. No waiting, just code it yourself-just like you need it. That has improved my workflow a lot and was one of the best worthwhile time investments I ever did.

    • RE: Who's been how long.

      I think it was 2007 that a co-worker pointed me to SU. Immediately liked the simplicity and easy modeling process and the fact you could give the model to clients as well. Before that I worked at firms where we used 3dsDos - 3dsMax (from 1996-2006). I only miss the uv tools from those days.

      No but it would be way more efficient if the tray would resize itself just like in previous versions. Having to resize the outliner / entity info / etc manually >100 times a day is not really fun.

    • RE: What is the best background colour for working on computer

      +1 for grey. Although when starting importing SU files in LayOut, I switch to white. For some reason, making updates to styles sometimes cause havoc in my LayOut files.

    • RE: To many 3d points how to reduce.

      Using models from the 3d warehouse is a risk. Always open the model in a separate file, look at the statistics, do some cleaning, renaming, welding etc etc. Most of the time I remodel it myself and just use the original as a reference for dimensions.

      There's always a big chance the original 3d modeller made that model with a different goal in mind. So the glasses can be either too low poly (very faceted and not suitable for doing renders) OR too high poly because the modeller wanted to spend 1.000.000 faces in making the perfect glasses and he wanted to render just one pair using his renderfarm.

      I wonder as to why they created this (instead a fixing problems like the clipping issue). Would this be an answer to all requests for a Linux version? Without Ruby plugins a lot of people (including me) wouldn't be using SketchUp though. Still-signed up and curious.

      @Charlie_V
      Thanks for the suggestion. It seems the Precision 15 5000 Series (5510) is/looks almost identical to the xps15 although its hardware is not as good at the same price(at least over here in The Netherlands). Slightly less cpu speed, quadro instead of gtx960m, 8 Gb memory and 256 Gb ssd instead of 16Gb and 512 Gb ssd.

      still looking...

    • RE: New Computers, Laptops and Slates.

      I'm up for a new laptop as well. So many choices..and still soo few since most brands don't offer a product for my 'ridiculous' wish-list. I'm looking for:

      • a nice looking business style laptop (no plastic crap, no fancy gaming design and no bright fancy gaming colors)
      • a good ips display. 15" and 1080p will do.
      • 3 Mhz dual/quad core cpu (Intel)

      • dedicated gtx graphics, somewhere in the 900 series
      • and of course; fast ssd, good keyboard, etc.

      I have been a long time user of Thinkpads and I really like the keyboards and small red-mouse pointer. They look like black boxes though and the screens are not that great most of the time. The ThinkPad T560 might be an option; i5-6200U (dual core 2.4-2.8 Ghz a bit underwhelming), GeForce 940MX 2GB is ok.

      An alternative could be a Dell XPS 15 9550; i7-6700HQ (quad core 2.6-3.5 Ghz), GeForce GTX 960M, nice looks and thin bezel. Keys on keyboard are apparently flat (on Thinkpad they are curved). I know someone who did have lots of problems with his xps13 a few years ago so would be interested to hear some more.

      Another one could be HP Envy 15-ae121nd; 6500U (dual core 2.5-3.1 Ghz) GeForce GTX 950M. Again, would be interested to hear more if someone uses this one.

      Lets keep this thread going so we all now where to look for a decent laptop.
