    • RE: [Plugin][$] FredoScale - v3.6a - 01 Apr 24

It was easy. Just do a very quick sketch hoping to make it clear what I was asking and not pay attention at all when drawing. I unfortunately am an occasional sketch up user now and forget the basics way to often. As for using the extension vs drawing the curve, I had model that was mostly completed and I wanted the end to splay a bit. So using the extension seemed like the fasted way at that point in the modeling. The example I used was a very simplified example.
      Thanks Dave

I am using the Radial Bend tool to model a "splayed" end of an object. A couple of questions. I know it is just a few steps to copy and flip a face and then finish the end, but was wondering if I missed a command in the tool that would allow this to be done off a center line so that you could use a model, bend one face and the opposite face would bend the same but in the opposite direction? If there a better tool I should consider for this type of modeling please let me know.
Thanks for a great tool and all the support

We do commercial architectural millwork and that means days of field dimensioning at times. Going to wait a bit on this one but hope it is a real solution to a very time consuming part of our work.

      David
One of my plans is to use SketchUp to draw some vessels, but I have not done that as of yet. I am thinking about various segmented and free from glued up designs. I have a few rough sketches done up, but have not started drawing in SketchUp yet. I have been collecting lots of nice cutoffs for future turning projects from work. I would like to see some models of turnings that people have made and have ended up on the lathe.
      Thanks

I know many of you like to model furniture you see on line. I learned about 1stdibs here and enjoy the site a lot. This site is a very eclectic site, but every now and again there are some great classics that are shown. The Sam Maloof rocker is a treasure.

Secondary woods where always a less costly wood in the day but drawers with out runners need very dimensional stable wood. I think the old guys used pine for a reason. Very stable and easy to work. It turns out that Eastern white pine is one of the most stable woods around. Radial movement is 2.1% and tangential movement is 6.1%. As a comparison White oak is 5.6 and 10.5%, Maple 4.8 and 9.9%, cherry 3.7 and 7.1% (quartered cherry is my wood of choice for drawer sides) and for the curious Mesquite is the most dimensionally stable wood around. 2.2 and 2.6%. http://www.srww.com/ Swamp roads wood working has a great plug in tool for sketch up for calculating wood expansion and contraction.

We are planning on getting a new plotter/scanner for large prints at work and it will scan in color. Do you think I will get fired if I try scanning sheets of veneer?

Looking around the site and you can find some longer good quality picture like this one maybe 20" long. I know get the camera out! http://www.certainlywood.com/images-veneers.php?item=WENGE%201501-5
Dave when you photograph a long board say an 8' board how critical is it to be parallel to the board? What length board is the practical maximum from your experience and what lighting do you use? What are your thoughts on photographing finished vs unfinished wood to use as a material? I have found for small pieces of wood the best way to take a picture and get correct color balance is to use my flat bed scanner.
      Thanks

A quick way to get wood textures for small items is http://www.certainlywood.com/index.html web site. They have some good pictures if you hunt around the site and the dimensions of the veneers are in the descriptions.I save the images with my guess as to the width of the piece in the name so I can scale them. I have not tried the long pictures yet. Also a great veneer house. Sorry the pictures are not epic like Dave's.

    • RE: [Plugin] GKWare Cabinet Maker

For our use I was thinking that your program would be a great way for us to quickly produce better presentation models. We currently do all our shop drawings in Auto Cad 2d, then our CNC engineer programs all the parts with all the function and assembly holes. While it would be great to by pass the 2d drawings I do not see that happening in our shop as we do mostly commercial work with an enormous range of very odd cabinets. It seems lately that every designer is reinventing the wheel every day!

Great work! Our cabinets are assembled with confirmat screws and dowels. Finished ends are a loose panel. The base cabinets are on leg levelers. Are you considering these options for the program?

When I ran Solid solver on a component in this model I would get a bug splat. I fixed all my components so that they are solids and ran Solid Solver and still go a bug splat. Any ideas? I am using Ver 8 of SketchUp.

We still have designers and architects specifying the metal strips today and we have to make the cabinets with them. Very infuriating. I agree no back makes it a much more difficult piece. Was it used as a two sided bookcase?

They also have competitions for the thinnest complete shaving. Some of the shavings seem to be a translucent and unimaginably thin, yet are a complete shaving. If you want to try, softwoods are easier than hardwoods. http://kottke.org/13/02/competitive-wood-planing
