      Hi Dale, hi folks.

      @dale said:

      Is it the hips that are confusing?
      if it were me, Since each end of the building that will become a hip could essentially be a gable,I would start with your eave overhang, and fascia depth, and knowing that a 4/12 is 18.43 degrees create gable ends first. Then Pushpull them through to intersect. This is going to be a longhand method, and since the fascia heights will vary, and we don't know the heel heights of the truss, you will have to make some assumptions, but if you start with series of gabled roofs, their intersecting geometry will solve what seems like a complex puzzle at the ridges, if you break the house up into solveable roof areas, just one at a time.
      The hips are just 45 degree angles that can be created from the gables., and complexities at the eave is geometry that once you have started I believe it will become obvious what it will take to make it work.
      I think this approach should work for you.

      Don't forget that with SU, you don't have to use only decimal angle for slopes.

      A 4:12 slope is 18.4349° (approx). It is difficult to enter the exact value that gives 4:12. However, with SU, you can enter this angle as 4:12 in the Measurement Toolbar when using the protractor to orient a guide, for example.

      Hi folks.

      To add to Dave's post, don't forget that you can orbit, pan and zoom even in the middle of an operation.

      For example, you can click to start a line, orbit to see the target where you want it and finally click on the target to finish the line.

      Another example: you want to add a circle whose center is on an endpoint located in a maze of complex geometry and then extend it on another endpoint that is hideen inside another complex geometry. The procedure could be like this:

      1 - Pan, orbit and zoom in on the geometry to be used to attach the center of the circle.

      2 - Select the Circle Tool.

      3 - Click on the required endpoint to start the circle, making sure that its orientation is correct.

      4 - Zoom out, pan and orbit in order to bring the target point in view.

      5 - Switch to X-Ray Mode to actually see the target point inside its enclosing geometry.

      6 - Zoom in on this target point.

      7 - Click on the target point to complete the circle.

      8 - Turn X-Ray mode off.

      Steps 1 and 2 can be reversed as can steps 4 and 5 or 5 and 6.

      The best is to experiment with these facilities. After a while, you will begin to appreciate the flexibility and power of SketchUp.

      Hi CactusMatt, hi folks.

      I suggest that you take the time to view the video tutorials to get acquainted with SketchUp (SU).

      It is more capable than you think in making this very simple design.

      Believe me, the few hours taken in viewing these videos will save you a lot more hours of frustration when using SU.

      In the mean time, here is a reconstitution of your pannel, using some assumptions. Click on the scene tabs of this SU file for ideas.

      Panel-Loc extrusion profile - JL.skp
      If you save only the final extruded panel, you will see that the size of the resulting file is 20K.

    • RE: Remplir du vide !!

      Bonjour.

      Une petite précision: trois points, lorque reliés deux à deux par trois arêtes vont automatiquement former une face ... à condition que:

      1 - Aucune arête ne soit plus courte que la limite inférieure que SketchUp peut traiter.

      2 - Les trois points sont dans le même contexte.

      La limite mentionnée au point 1 est d'environ 0.03 mm lors du tracé d'une arête. Par contre, si une arrête résulte d'une opération telle que l'utilisation de l'outil Suivez-moi, par exemple, la limite est plutôt de l'ordre de 0.5 mm.

      Au point 2, s'il y a déjà deux arêtes dans un groupe, par exemple, et qu'on trace la troisième arête pour compléter le triangle mais que cette arête est en dehors du groupe, la face ne se fermera pas.

      Hi folks.

      Lets pretend that you want to help someone who uses SketchUp (SU) in an other language.

      You would like to point some help article to this person but you can only find it in your own language, for example English.

      Lets pretend that this is a French speaking person that wants to know how the Circle Tool works.

      From SU's Help Center, you can find a list of articles using the words circle tool in the search field.

      Normally, this search brings you here:

      http://support.google.com/sketchup/bin/search.py?hl=en&ctx=en%3Asearchbox&query=circle+tool&oq=circle+tool&gs_l=partner.3..0l2.2844.4500.0.4937.11.9.0.2.2.0.32.32.9.9.0.gsnos%2Cn%3D13..0.0.1625j283361j11..1ac.1.qkVum7rSMCY

      On this page a list of articles can be found with hyperlinks.

      The fourth one reads: SketchUp Circle Tool: Drawing a circle

      If I click on it I get here:

      http://support.google.com/sketchup/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=94741

      Notice the language code hl=en. You will have to click this to see it since the SketchUcation forum truncate the URL.

      en stands for English.

      If I substitute fr to replace en, I get:

      http://support.google.com/sketchup/bin/answer.py?hl=fr&answer=94741

      Its the same text but in French.

      The language codes that I was able to find are these:

      EN = English-US
      FR = French (Français)
      ES = Spanish(Español)
      IT = Italian (Italiano)
      DE = German(Deutsch)
      NL = Dutch(Nederlands)
      Pt-BR = Portuguese - Brasil (Português-Brasil)
      RU = Russian

      My example with the circle tool seems to works and I checked for English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and German.

      I am not sure that Dutch and Russian work correctly since, with these languages I get what looks like a warning text followed by help in English.

      Also, since I don't have a keyboard configured for languages not using Roman characters, I was not able to check all.

    • RE: Trucs, astuces et idées

      Bonjour.

      Supposons que vous voulez aider quelqu'un qui travaille avec SketchUp (SU) dans une autre langue.

      Vous voulez l'aiguiller vers une rubrique d'aide mais vous ne savez la trouver que dans votre langue, par exemple le Français.

      Supposons que c'est un anglophone qui se demande comment fonctionne l'outil cercle.

      À partir de l'aide de SU, vous pouvez trouver une liste de rubriques en utilisant les mots outil cercledans le champ de recherche.

      Normalement cette recherche vous amène ici:

      http://support.google.com/sketchup/bin/search.py?hl=fr&ctx=fr%3Asearchbox&query=outil+cercle

      Sur cette page se trouvent une série de rubriques d'aide.

      La première est intitulée: Outil Cercle : Dessin

      Si on clique dessus on se retrouve ici:

      http://support.google.com/sketchup/bin/answer.py?hl=fr&answer=94741

      Notez le code de langue hl=fr. Il faut cliquer sur le lien pour voir toute l'adresse car le logiciel de forum tronque cette adresse.

      fr signifie Français.

      Si on substitue en à la place de fr, on obtient donc:

      http://support.google.com/sketchup/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=94741

      C'est le même texte d'aide mais en Anglais.

      Les codes de langues que j'ai pu découvrir sont les suivants:

      EN = Anglais - États Unis (English-US)
      FR = Français
      ES = Espagnol (Español)
      IT = Italien (Italiano)
      DE = Allemand (Deutsch)
      NL = Hollandais (Nederlands)
      Pt-BR = Portugais - Brésil (Português-Brasil)
      RU = Russe

      Mon exemple avec l'outil cercle semble fonctionner et j'ai vérifié pour le Français, l'Anglais, l'Espagnol, l'Italien, le Portuguais et l'Allemand.

      Je ne suis pas certain que le Hollandais et le Russe fonctionnent correctement car j'obtiens un texte dans ces langues, qui ressemble à un texte d'avertissement et ensuite l'aide est en Anglais.

      De plus, comme je n'ai pas un clavier configuré pour le Russe ni pour les langues utilisant des caractères autre que les caractères Romains, je n'ai pas tout vérifié.

      Au passage, est-ce qu'il existe une astuce pour effacer tous les textes mis sur un schéma, ou pour les faire réapparaitre rapidement. On doit pouvoir faire en mettant tous les textes sur un calque particulier, mais existe t'il une autre astuce, dans les menus déroulants ou avec une case à cocher ?

      Utiliser Menu Fenêtre --> Infos sur le modèle --> Texte.

      Dans la fenêtre de dialogue qui apparait, il y a deux boutons, l'un permettant de sélectionner tout le texte d'écran et l'autre permettant de sélectionner tout le texte des légendes.

      Pour sélectionner tous les textes des deux catégories, il faut procéder en deux temps car ces deux sélections sont mutuellement exclusives.

      Après chaque sélection, assigner l'ensemble de la sélection à un calque. Par la suite, il est possible de contrôler la visibilité de ce calque pour faire apparaître et disparaître tous les textes avec une seule manipulation.

      Voir cette page de l'aide:

      http://support.google.com/sketchup/bin/answer.py?hl=fr&answer=114975

      Défiler la page, les paragraphes pour les textes sont vers la fin.

      En passant, si on utilise Menu Fenêtre --> Infos sur le modèle --> Cotation, un bouton du même genre permet de sélectionner toutes les cotes en une seule manipulation. C'est pratique si on veut les associer également à un calque pour en contrôler la visibilité.

      Voir le texte sur la cotation sur la même page d'aide.

    • RE: Workflow efficiency..... got any tips?

      Hi Hamlet G, hi folks.

      In SketchUp (SU), layers are used only to control the visibility of objects.

      Normally, you keep base geometry on Layer 0 and assign groups or components to other layers.

      This is what you seem to be doing so, everything looks fine so far.

      The easiest way that comes to my mind to manage various combinations of layers visibility or invisibility is to use scenes.

      For example, suppose that you have a component called A. This components has two sub-components called A1 and A2. Now suppose that you want to show two options, one with only subcomponent A1 showing and the other with only subcomponent A2 showing. You create 2 layers that you can call whatever you want. Lets call then A1 and A2. You assign sub-component A1 to layer A1 and, of course, sub-component A2 to layer A2. Then you create 2 scenes that you can call whatever you want. Lets call one Option 1 and the other Option 2. On layer Option 1, you show layer A1 and you hide Layer A2. On the other scene, you show layer A2 and you hide Layer A1. Don't forget to update the scenes after changing the visibility of the layers. Maybe you can uncheck the box that tells the layer manager to remember the camera position. That way, if you orbit, pan or zoom between views, you wont loose that view when you switch option.

      Once this is done, a click on the relevant scene tab will make visible the required layer and hide the non required one and thus, will only show one of the two sub-component, even if they are occupying the same location in space.

      Just ideas.

    • RE: HI! IM New and I need help! (desperate)

      Hi Oscar, hi folks.

      For your problem number 1, for a face to closes it must meet these requirements:

      • there must be no gaps between edges;

      • there must be no edges protruding inside the face;

      • all endpoints must be coplanar;

      • no edge shall be smaller than about 1/16 inch or 1 mm (approx).

      If you can post the model, or at least the problematic part, someone may be able to show you where is the problem or where are the problems.

    • RE: Measure Tool - Scaling question?

      Hi folks.

      Try this trick instead of doing calculations that will never be exact, expecially with 1/300.

      Add a line of 300 units anywhere in you model. Lets say you work in meters with a precision of one decimal, draw a line of 300 meters.

      Then, select the Tape measure Tooland measure this new edge. Of course SU will show 300.0m in the Measurement Toolbar.

      Type 1 and then press the Return key. No need to type a m for meters since SU will use that 1 with your default unit which happens to be meters.

      When asked if you want to resize the whole model, click Yes. The added edges will now measure 1 meter and the whole model will have been reduced by the same factor.

      Delete this extra edge when done.

      By the way, if you want to resize for printing purpose, you don't really need to do that since it is possible to print to scale with SU. Read the help about printing to scale.

      See this YouTube video on how to dismantle a Rubik's cube.

      Don't worry, I dismantled mine quite a few times and never had any problem in reassembling it. You have to be carefull otherwise, if you misplace a part or rotate it in a bad orientation, then mix the cube, it will be unsolvable. They do a lot of projections on buildings, beside many other multimedia production.

      Maybe someday a plugin (or an advanced version of SU) will allow the projection of images and movies on models.
