I think this almost makes us world famous!
Well! Maybe close.
Thanks for the mention Google!
One of our team members that has made some great contributions to our Carnegie Library Preservation Project is now going to be in charge of administrating development of the Carnegie Library 3D record in the state of Iowa.
Leedeetee, one of the members here at SCF is setting up communication and location information at our Google group site, 3D Carnegie which can be seen here.
http://groups.google.com/group/3d-carnegie
Our overall collection and project direction has moved forward due to having others that have contacted us with information they have gathered, with an interest in having their work represented in 3D models, and presented in Google Earth.
The CLIP group of the university of Iowa is one of those projects. Their work can be seen here.
Larry Nix, a library historian has shown interest in having a 3D record of Carnegie Library buildings modeled for the state of Wisconsin. His work collection can be seen here.
So if you are interested in being involved, there are places where you can plug into our project.
If you are from another state, and would like to contribute your local Carnegie Library buildings, contact us, and let us know what you have in mind.
The buildings don't have to still be libraries, they just have to be recognized as originally being Carnegie's. It might take some detective work to locate and get accurate information, of which Leedeetee is working on an outline for this type of information gathering, which should help out a lot. Thanks Lee.
This is an opportunity to be a part of history. Come join the fun.

One other note. We are coming up on the 100 year celebration of the Carnegie Foundation. 1911 - 2011 I can't think of a better tribute then to have this collection of 3D models to offer up for all to see and enjoy.
The count of Carnegie Library building models uploaded to the 3D warehouse at present is 21, but we still have a long way to go. Not to mention 49 more states and the rest of Europe.
Still hoping for more involvement from some of you outstanding modelers. Please take a moment, and have a look at our collection. Download the KMZ file that has all the locations already mapped out for you, and pick a Carnegie to model.
Become a part of history, and help us record, for all to see these amazing yet simple structures.

Jax,
I am really happy to see the success you have achieved so far and I could even say I am "proud" of you but I am a lazy butt and if ever I model something, that really needs to be modelled to meet my deadline.
But at least I am following the project with great interest!
Thank you my friend. Your interest is always appreciated.
We really could use more help in getting all 88 of the California Carnegie buildings modeled and presented.
We have come along way in a few days, but have a lot of work ahead of us. Not to mention a lot of fun also.
Take a look!
Come join the team and contribute what you can.

Well, who certifies the Cad drafters? Is there some national board of cad directors or something? Maybe they need to be the ones who make up the requirements to become fully SketchUp certified.
If nothing like that exists, feel free to start your own competency test and certificate. Create some sort of standardized test, then make a fancy diploma/certifcate you can send to people when they pass your test. And BAM!, you become the official certifying agency in the eyes of the government and everyone must pay you hundreds of dollars to take your test.
I think its a great solution
Oh great! Now were going to have certified certifiers coming out of the wood work. Thanks Chris!!
The amount of models for the state of California is growing for our project.
Here is a link to the collection on the 3D warehouse, showing models that have been completed and approved for viewing in the Google Earth 3D layer.
Come join us in modeling this great collection of unique buildings.
We just recently got 4GB of photos from a resource of all the Carnegie's in California, so for anyone who picks a building, and can't quite get the information they need from Street View, let me know and I will upload what you need to help you along.
Thanks to Lee and Patrick for being part of the modeling team. Hope your having fun!!

Do a Google Search on Andrew Carnegie. He was the Philanthropist that donated funds for all the Carnegie Library buildings to be built. Even Though today, many of the buildings are no longer libraries, they are still "Carnegie's" and worthy of being preserved as part of the historical record.
Ah right yes, I am aware of him and his works! Was more wondering about the terminology.
Makes perfect sense now.
I have started my first model anyway, and hope to get it finished today (its 9am, Sunday here!). Thoroughly enjoyable!
Haven't seen anything yet. Stop off at one of those York pub's for a cold one? LOL! Look forward to see what you come up with.
Bit behind schedule but will get Yreka finished tonight.
Few quick questions though, I believe Yreka was built in two parts (an extension was built in 1980) and so I am modeling both at the minute - is that the correct way to procced?
Also, despite my best efforts I am unable to find any perpendicular images of the sides of the library. I have enough info from angled photographs of the front to construct something resembling the real world, which is what i will do, so hope this is OK also.
Upload the SKP file to the 3D Carnegie group or Google docs and I'll take a look, and instruct where I can.
Thanks for your contribution. Hope to see more!

Hey Jax!
I'm in!
Not sure how much time I can dedicate to this but you can be sure I'll help out as and when I can!
Just one question, what's a Carnegie?! Sorry to be a bit dense but us Brits only know it as the name of the Philanthropist and as a suffix to sports teams!

Hi Jax,
A very interesting project there and some very decent results too.

It really is fun to have to hunt for just the right amount of information to complete the model.
I guess we will see if Google like them! This is the same thinking as me also, it really does sound fun, like a big jigsaw puzzle!
Thanks for the info, fodo for thought indeed.
You are very welcome Leedeetee, and you are more then welcome to be part of our project if you need some real world experience in modeling using GE and Streetview. Go ahead and model some Carnegie's. We could use the help. It's Google's approval process that will tell you if you have done things right.
Models for our project are not added to the collection until they are approved, so model away!
@leedeetee said:
Yeah, it's just to model for GE to have some fun, to take a break from modeling my own city. I have seen other models in GE with blank faces at the back of terraced houses for example (some houses in the famous Dursley project are like this) but as I said earlier, this doesn't look great, but are still on GE??
So, I guess finding buildings with 360 degree streetview (or as near as possible) in cities with a lot of photographs, good GE coverage and good birds eye views, then a reasonable model for GE could be achieved???
The project we are working on uses a combination of Street View and other resources off the web to gather as much graphical and text information.
Here is the start of what I am working on. The top six models were done using the combination mentioned above.
And here is the project itself.
http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=271&t=25539
I will be doing most of the modeling with the above mentioned method, but will also rely on others who live in the locations some of the buildings are in. It really is fun to have to hunt for just the right amount of information to complete the model.
I guess we will see if Google like them!
@gaieus said:
From a "distance", you need good images and measurements of the buildings.
That is very true. But this GE modeling, so being spot on isn't as critical, yet we want to be as accurate as possible for the historic value we are creating.
Hoping to garner enough interest so that local folks in the location of some of the Carnegie's would be willing to gather some of that information. It's part of the challenge, especially working with some of the admin folks in the cities. Some have been very helpful, some you would think are guarding their gold. They just won't release some of what they have.
My biggest issue so far has been in my own town. Go figure. Can't get my city to release any as built drawings of our Carnegie. Fear of copy rights seems to be their issue, but working through this kind of stuff is all apart of it.
Makes it kind of sweet when you land on someone who has CAD floor plans and elevations. Makes you feel like you discovered some hidden treasure of something. Kind of cool!

Hi Jax,
I have answered your PM as well as your email - but for the others' sake; a PM is listed in the "Outbox" until the recipient reads it - thenit will "move" to the "Sent messages" box. So no bug or anything just not everybody whom you wrote has read your messages yet.
BTW - are there any takers for the project yet?
It seems to be fun - too bad I am thousands of miles away (there should be another 3D BaseCamp so that we can all visit Mountain View again!)
Yes! I am very pleased to say that Patrick, Museummaker has joined in.
And we are all thousands of miles away. Remember, this is the internet. I have modeled a couple of northern California Carnegie buildings already that are thousands of miles away.
We have a great resource for this project.
The Carnegie Libraries of California web site is dedicated to preserving these treasures of history, provided by Pat & Bernie Skehan
(www.carnegie-libraries.org)
These folks are sending use all the graphics they put together for this site. Talk about someone who has traveled along ways. Think how many miles these people took to get the information they did. It's amazing!
Finding these types of sites, and hunting down other information, is all part of the fun in a project like this.
Mike has shown an interest. I guess he has discovered there are quite a few Carnegie buildings in his area and in Europe also. Once we get this test case part of the project close to completion, all those other locations should be interesting to hunt out.
So! No excuses. Come join in Gaieus. We would appreciate your contribution.

Means they've not been read yet.
Read, as in needing approval before they send?
Never had that type of issue before. Something new?

Hi Jax,
I'd suggest to edit the topic subject to something like "Need Modelers for Project - California" as I guess if there are some people interested around there, this would catch their eyes (if, say, they are browsing the "New posts" list in the forum).
And good luck, as I told, hope that some people joins and your project will launch successfully!

Thank you very much Mike. I'm hoping others will see it as you and I do.
Should be interesting!
For anyone who is interested in being involved in a historical preservation project, please visit our Google Group and site. We could use modelers and web site administration help, so come on over and join the team.
Google Approved!!
http://sketchupdate.blogspot.com/2010/03/modeling-californias-carnegie-libraries.html
See some completed models below!
We will be starting off the project by modeling all the existing Carnegie Library buildings in California.(KMZ file of locations at links below) This will be the test case for gaging interest in this type of project, for moving into a program covering the US and other countries.
Pitching this project to the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the original Andrew Carnegie Foundation is the objective. Involvement now could turn into a much longer term projects later.
If your interested in volunteering your time and abilities now we would really appreciate your help to get this off the ground.
Thanks
