Hi - you could do a lot worse than Tom's Desk 2.5 D trees.

      Have a look here - http://solosplace.com/Tomsdesk.aspx

You are very right John. Tomsdesk is doing some great work, and I have contacted him, and have asked if he would be interested in being a part of our Carnegie Library team. We have a lot of landscape rendering needs for every Carnegie historic record we will be creating.

I would like to ask the same of you. Leedeetee, a member here at SkecthUcation is working on our Carnegie historic record in the UK, and I'm sure he would love your professional advise. He is in York.

He is now working on the first Carnegie for the UK collection with pulling up the Carnegie that is in Hull.

At our group page, http://groups.google.com/group/3d-carnegie you can see a KMZ file of the Carnegie in Hull, and contact Lee, if you would be interested.

Thanks again for the tip on Tomsdesk.

      Cheers!

    • Has anyone modeled Oak Trees?

Needing a few full sized 100 year old oak trees for a rendering scene. Would like 3D full models, but will look at 2D always facing camera types.

You can go to this album for a look at the setting we are working on, and get a good feel for what we are looking for.

Theyre' just normal PDFs, so just setting them up. I've actually been on my sickbed for most of the week with awful flu/cold so Carnegies have been slow. Was starting to feel a bit better though, hence my post, although, saying that, think I need to go back to bed. 🀒

Is this how you'd do it?

You have the right idea. Just pull the elevations back from the floor plan a bit, to give yourself some working room. And if you have grouped each view, and placed them on their own layer, you can turn them on or off as you wish.

Looks like a great challenge you have there Lee. What a unique looking building. Should be fun.

Cheers Jack, it's for Hull Carnegie. πŸ˜„

Did they send you CAD drawings or PDF vector? They are much easier to work with.

I had a feeling that might have been why you asked the question.

How are the UK Carnegie's going?

      Hi,

Just after a bit of advice to see how you experts would set uyp your drawing when you have a floor plans and elevations available to you.

Would you have your modell on the floor and then your elevations in the corresppnding sides you can you use parallel projection and your front/back views etc? Or is there a better way to do this?

I'm by no means an expert, but I can share what has worked well for me.

I use each drawing, be it a floor plan or elevations as a reference only. I make each drawing a group, and put each group on it's own layer so that I can turn it on or off as I need to reference it. That way I can draw right on top of the original, and not have anything stick to it.

I position the floor plan to pull up perimeter walls, and reference elevations for wall hight and window and door locations. Positioning elevations in correspondence to floor plan reference.

If it's a CAD drawing, I can snap to points and lines. If it's a JPG or PDF image, I size things as close as the clarity of the lines will allow me. Oversize walls in rectangles, pull them up to hight, and then push/pull them to wall thickness.

      Hope that helps Lee.

    • RE: Business Question relating to SketchUp and the web

There is a marketing aspect to modeling that maybe even your client isn't aware of. Placing a model of ones business or building in GE is not about the model, and making it so that people can do a walk through, which would not be possible without making a much more accurate model for that to happen, which you have already alluded to.

The marketing aspect of a simple model, uploaded to the 3D Warehouse and placed in Google Earth is that it gets premium indexing priority from the Google web crawlers. SEO is the benefit of having a model present in GE, and now if the business has a "Google Local Business Listing," that information is now tied to the models description.

All of that can be present on a web page also using the GE API, so there are some business benefits to pulling up a simple model for GE.

I have another question though, Uploading the saved KMZ file I created in GE. Could you explain how that is done to connect it to the model in the 3D warehouse?

Thanks for asking this because I have the same question, yesterday I noticed that there is a GE app. to embed GE to websites and one part of the process ask to upload he kmz file. where do I upload this? and FTP a webserver?

      Thanks.

P.S. I'm also reading what gaeius said He's full of knowledge

I found out if you go to the 3d warehouse home page, there is an upload button up in the top right hand corner. I believe that is what he is talking about.

OK! I downloaded the model example, and then I right clicked on the 3D layer model to hide it, and then clicked on the visibility for the model I downloaded from the warehouse, but I could not see any information attached to that model.

I can right click on the properties of the downloaded model to see the HTML code, but how do I get that information to come up so I can see it off of the model?

OH1 I just clicked on the Name of the model in the left column to see the information, but it's not attached to the viewable model in GE. Will it be eventually?

I guess I needed to read the first part of your post closer, because that is what you said.

I have another question though, Uploading the saved KMZ file I created in GE. Could you explain how that is done to connect it to the model in the 3D warehouse?

      Hi Alejandro,

There are a couple of ways you can "tweak" things. Those labels you see there are of course not submitted via the 3D WareHouse (or anything 3D related) but via the Google Earth Community at bbs.keyhole.com (the "original" GE forum before Google acquired what is now GE) OR via Google Map Maker (IF Mexico is in the programme - interesting that my country is not so there's no way I could use it) as the info/data is transferable between maps and earth. You can even simply add these things in your Google Maps application and once they will be included.

Some basic knowledge of html coding (or at least copy/pasting existing code) is not bad when editing these "bubbles" as they can have pretty rich content (unfortunately this is not the case with the GE 3D Layer bubbles - I have an old feature request at google to allow us code those bubbles)

Also, you can add a link to the description of your 3D model and that could take the visitor to a website where you can create individual pages for these hotels displaying images, interactive content, different links whatnot. If you are going to meet with these guys, you could even "offer" his as an "extra service" IMO. It is not that damn difficult to create something like this with the help of any easy to use content management systems.

      Hey Gaieus,

I would love to be able to add content and/or links to more information to each model in our Carnegie Library collection. I would like to be able to show off of the model in GE, more accurate renders of exterior and interior shots of each Carnegie, and schematic floor plans and elevations.

It's what we are trying to put together in making our project a more accurate historic record of the Carnegie collection.

Is there a step by step instruction method for being able to add that kind of content to GE models?

I see it developing in this simple manner.

GE models residing in GE are like icons on a web page, linking to more interactive and rich information about each location.

Can you help me pull this off, or send me to someone who can instruct us on how we could accomplish this?

      Sure would appreciate the help.

      Thanks

I had just posted this information on our group page for this project, and thought I would mention it here also.

Sometimes, Street View really doesn't give you real clear information to model the way you would like to.

If you have checked out the KMZ file of the Carnegie library building project and found the above mentioned to be true, please contact me at the group page located here.

      http://groups.google.com/group/3d-carnegie

I can upload some good clean graphics of the Carnegie you have chosen to model in California.

Hope this helps some of you get excited about being involved in our project.
