RE: Freelancers...
I have found it to be a great resource by being involved in the help forums, and in groups related to 3D modeling. Especially Maps.
Being involved in the Google Places help forums has gotten me quite a few clients that understand the connection of all things Google.
Being involved in using Google's Map Maker program has done a ton for creating new clients also.
Polish up your Google Profile before going in, and it creates a direct connection to what you do.
Hope that helps some.

1969 Z-28 Camaro RS Project
I'm working on a project to model in 3D, car parts of a 1969 Z-28 Camaro RS for output to a 3D printer for duplication of the parts. Everything is 1:8 scale which will make the finished model about 23" long. Development of a kit for others to build is the objective.
Here is the work done on the prototype model in which we will be getting much of the specs off of. It was developed over a 13 year period from a 1:1 car.
But we are in need of some CAD or tech drawings to do most of the modeling off of, if they are available at all.
I thought I would post this information here, just in case anyone of you had access to that type of information.
Appreciate it guys. This should be quite a challenge for a Geo modeler.

I would check out FreshBooks.
It's a great invoicing program, with plugins to track time and incorporated that information directly into a clients invoice.

RE: WTF Google?

Thanks Gaieus, but I understand that we have been there and done that as the saying goes. What does one do when a municipality has submitted imagery through those links, but still nothing gets done? There is no way to contact a human being to check and see whether GE is happy with what has been submitted, or if there is a problem. Although I appreciate you are all trying to help, bombarding me with more and more links to different websites doesn't get me any further ahead. I need someone at GE who can look into the issue and communicate with me or the Town of Cobourg GIS technician.
Don't hold your breath waiting.

I posted here, which seemed appropriate
Oh, and by the way Mike and Dermott, I do appreciate your economic woes are worse than ours, but let's not get off track.
The link I posted is where a lot of Google program directors and people that can actually get something done hang out. At least when it comes to maps and GIS data are concerned.
I think you would have a better chance on getting the right persons attention there.

Thanks Rich, but I did post a less heated version on a GE forum. It just sits there without any response. And I used WTF to mean 'Where's The Feedback?'. At least here I am sure to get some kind of response as you have just proved.
I would suggest going here.

RE: Need help making a sweet gaming chair
@da_ninja said:
Hi people.
I need masive help (IE Step by step tutorial) on how to make a sweet gaming chair in sketchup. It has to look awsome too.
The problem is that I cannot access youtube, nor many other tutorial sites, and most certainly not file sharing, and software sites. This is because I have been asked to make a chair for Design & Tech, and i have made a chair. Now I want to top the rest of the students, and make a gaming chair, in high detail. I would use youtube for tutorials, but im at school and its blocked. I dont have sketchup at home and even if i did, i couldnt get the files to school because my home computer is so corrupt it thinks a 8GB Lexar Jumpdrive is a USB Memory Bar USB (but thats something else). School even blocks things because they are educational. They may even block this website too in about a week or 2.
You mean something like this?

RE: Do you use Social Networking for promotion of your work
@dale said:
The people I was talking to, who are much younger,and connected in the social media sense, seem to have a website that they draw traffic to from Facebook and Twitter. With blogs coming in 3rd.
They were also talking about software that automatically posts to all the sites you choose at once, without the need to post individually.
My Social networking has certainly been limited to this Forum, and others that are directly involved with learning, and giving where I can. I've never really needed to try to get work, as the company I work for keeps me busy.
But I would really like to see how others are taking advantage of it. I am also a healthy skeptic, in that I'm wondering how effective this can be if people like me know that I am being essentially marketed to.Getting a lot of traffic to a site is one thing. Gaining clients and making sales is another.
The ROI, if you factor in the time it takes to build all of those so called friends, and then having to deal with all the flaming you get, because you mentioned on a social network that you have business, isn't very good.
The social network thing has a tendency to suck a lot of hours out of your day, without much to show for your effort at the end of it all.
Your time and energy would be better spent on more targeted locations. I have found getting involved in the help forums and groups specifically geared towards 3D modeling and design to be a much better use of my time.

.......I have not found this to be true doing testing on the Chrome OS pilot program, using the CR-48.....
Can you expand? Chrome OS is a replacement for WinXX OS right? What is CR-48, a cloud application? If so, how do you judge how fast it runs as a PC based application? I am a "babe in the woods" regarding all of this.
The CR-48 is the notebook, or should I say netbook that was sent to all of those involved in the pilot program for testing Google's Chrome OS. There is no hard drive, so everything you do on the CR-48 is through an app that resides on the net as far as programs used.
That's why the tag line for the Chrome OS is "Nothing but the net." I have found everything I have used and tried through apps and the OS to be quite snappy. Even though there are some beta drawbacks, I believe the OS and cloud computing in general is off to a great start.

Deep inside I like to think that somewhere between SU 9 and 11, SU will move into the webapp realm. Maybe not exclusively, but have a version that works there too so it can be used on all OS's.
Aren't apps. on the cloud slower then those PC based?
I have not found this to be true doing testing on the Chrome OS pilot program, using the CR-48.
But I would also love to see SU in the cloud for Chrome OS. I guess we will have to wait and see. WebGL is promising for GE, so that's at least a start.

RE: Logo and Design Development

When you select the inserted SU Viewport in LO, under the SketchUp model tab, on the tray (on the right) the rendering setting (and all others) become active.
If you go this route set your scenes in SU (in case of a 2d design, an ortho view and one of the standard views) then update the scene as well as the style that scene is using. and only then send it to LO.
You see! LO as a default doesn't have the "SketchUp Model" tab window up, which I find very strange.
Just bringing that window up, makes all the difference in the world.
Hope the LO developers are listing!!
Thanks guys.

RE: Logo and Design Development
@gaieus said:
IN LO, you can render your SU model in raster, hybrid or vector mode. In raster mode, everything is raster. In vector mode, everything is vector (and your raster SU textures are converted into colours like in shaded without textures in SU). Hybrid mode will display your edges in vector mode and your textures in raster mode.
Now considering that you said that you only intend to use colours, either vector or raster mode would be the same.
When you export a PDF file, it will be a vector based PDF with your custom settings (high quality means 300 dpi but of course, dpi is irrelevant when speaking of vectors). This vector PDF can be used in various 2D editing applications.If you export in png (and do not set ground and sky), it will export with a transparent background SU would not do on Windows natively (TT has a plugin though).
But as said above, since you are a pro user, you can also export in various vector based formats straight from SU, too.
Thanks for the instructions my friend.
I'm still a little confused. So I'm sending my model to Layout. Where do I go from there to make adjustments to make it raster or vector? I'm just not familiar enough with LO to know what the steps are.
What tabs do I need to look into, or where is it that I need to go to see a comparison of the two types?
This is why I was asking for a step by step workflow.
Thanks again for your time.

@gaieus said:
As I see you are on SU Pro, you could even use LayOut to produce vector based graphics (although most what's said above is valid, too).
Could you instruct me on how to convert or recognize vector in LO? I have sent graphics to LO and it seems they export out much cleaner. Is it because they are converted?

RE: Good Dynamic Component Examples
I have also found a huge lack of support for DC's. It started off very well, as an additional feature in the Pro version of the SketchUp program, but has not gotten the support for development I believe it deserves.
Some have created some good instructional videos, but most of them cost something, and others don't create enough of a fundamental understanding of how to develop DC's.
I believe the Ruby Script Language has taken first position to the development of DC's, which is great. Ruby is awesome. I would just like to see DC's get as much attention.
Just my experience.
