So you're saying that you have never had a multiple face on any of your models? 😲

I get this from time to time as well. I suspect it's when I base geometry on imported CAD data which some times have some tiny inaccuracy that triggers some precision bug in SketchUp. PITA! X_x

Well, I know this is not the problem, at least in my case, because I don't use imported CAD data. I can't even spell CAD πŸ˜†
It might not be so frustrating if it only added one extra face, at least then I would know that I could just delete the extra face and move on. But up to seven faces? What on earth could cause that? All I'm doing is either adding a face or subdividing an existing face, nothing complicated or mysterious about that. And I'm not talking about one particular model that's causing the problem, it happens, randomly, with no particular rhyme or reason, on whatever model I happen to be working on. And I know it's not a problem with a particular installation of SU, I have SU on several computers and it happens with each of them. Right now, because I never know how many extra faces there are, I just keep deleting them until there is no face, then undo the last deletion. Not the ideal solution.
It's not an earth-shattering problem, I know that I can fix it when it happens, it's just so dang annoying, it's a pothole in the road when I'm otherwise just cruising along creating another masterpiece (in my dreams). What I was really hoping was that it was a problem that other SU users had solved long ago and in my noobie ignorance had just not puzzled out the solution for myself.
Maybe somebody could write a plugin that makes extra faces a different color, at least that way I could just keep deleting them until the color was right πŸ˜‰ .
Anyhow, thanks for all your input. I guess I'll just add it to my ever-growing list of SU peculiarities, and live with it. It's getting to the point that sometimes I wish I had never stumbled across SU. I certainly would have more free time to grow old.

    • Multiple faces driving me crazy!

Is there some sort of trick to avoiding multiple faces being created when adding a face or subdividing a face? By multiple faces I mean faces on top of faces. Seems to be random as far as the the number of faces created, I think my record is seven. It's just a real pain when you go to paint the object, the multiple faces won't paint or smooth and you have to keep deleting the extra faces until you finally reach the "real" face. What the heck causes them? Is it my bad attitude?

A few early shots of my '56 Sunliner, my first scratch-built model. Still a lot of work to be done, thinking about making a Crown Victoria version also. Building from scratch is a whole new ball game, but much more rewarding than fixing up somebody else's work.

At least one of the interiors has a Pontiac emblem on the steering wheel hub and the radio nearby says Pontiac.
Edit post to remove incorrect observation regarding model styles.

Not sure what this means, the bottom two photos are of the 67 GTO I did.

By the way, nice chrome trim work. Are these textures available for use in Sketchup?

Thanks. I took all of my textures from photos of actual cars, and other things. A lot of searching to find the right photos, and very tricky to project these just right, a lot of piecing and patching and editing and trial and error. But I'm getting better at it.

    • RE: My first models

Thanks for the compliments. As far as rendering them, if I upload the Chevy maybe someone else can do it, but rendering doesn't really interest me, for these models anyway. Since I tried to make them as stock as possible, like they just came off the showroom floor (I even turned back the odometer to zero), rendering them would only make them look like any other photo of a '57 Chevy, and there are plenty of them out there. Now, if I could render them and they could still be viewed as a SU model, that would be different (maybe in ten or fifteen years when computers are so powerful that it could handle the task with ease). I can see the value of rendering if someone creates an original model, something that doesn't exist in the real world, like a robot or house or spaceship or something. That would be interesting. One thing I'm thinking about doing, there are a lot of classic cars that I like but there are some changes I would make to them. Like the '57 Chrysler 300C, I love the lines but the grill area is butt ugly.
Was hoping to get more feedback on these, you know how it is, you spend so much time on a model it's difficult to step back and look at it objectively. Ah twell.
      Anyhow, I appreciate your comments.

Well, I'm not sure the cars are smooth enough for rendering. No way for me to tell, of course. I did try to look at Chipp's videos, kept freezing on me, and now whenever I open a web page the music from his videos plays in the background. It's playing right now. Driving me nuts. πŸ˜†

Thanks Solo. Yeah, I just fixed up some models I found on the warehouse. Took me awhile, my methods are crude and figuring out how to use the plugins I should be using is very difficult. But it turned out to be a pretty good way to learn SU.
As far as rendering them, I don't know anything about rendering but wouldn't it be difficult because of all the textures?

    • My first models

These are my first attempts at modeling in SU, and I thought I would put them here to see if anyone has any opinions or suggestions. They aren't original, I just fixed up a couple of models I found in the warehouse. The GTO was by Marian, nobody seems to agree who originally made the Chevy. The GTO was my first, I had downloaded it and thought "I don't like those tires" and it sort of progressed from there. I've been playing with projecting textures to add some realism, and have had a lot of help and suggestions along the way via the forum. Thanks to everyone who held my hand during those noobie days when I made a pest of myself asking such things as "how do you make a dome?", "why are some of my faces blue instead of white?", and "How do you spell SU?" πŸ˜† .
I've started building my own models from scratch now, I'm working on a '55 Ford Sunliner convertible, a '40 Ford Coupe and a '55 Buick Roadmaster (my first car way back in '67). I love the oldies. Maybe because I are one.
I'm making several versions of the Chevy, a convertible, a sports coupe, and a mild hot rod. I'm trying to figure out a good way to put flames on the hot rod. I uploaded the GTO to the warehouse, nobody seems to be interested in it. Don't think I'll bother uploading the Chevy.
One thing that's driving me nuts is the limitations on painting the cars, so many colors just don't look right with flat colors. Paint a car black and it looks like an ink blot.
I know they aren't perfect, and I'll never be as good as some of the people who have uploaded models to the warehouse, but I'm having a LOT of fun, and would really appreciate any opinions.
      Thanks for looking.

    • RE: Which methods to use

Sorry, had to go to Ohio for a few days.

Numbthumb, if by "hand-stitching" you mean do I draw each individual line and polygon, yes, that's what I do. I can do that in such a way that they are neat and orderly, but by the time I finish shaping the object, by moving each individual poly this way and that (thank God for Smustard's "Nudge" plugin) they take on the "throw-up" look I mentioned. It's not that I care that they end up looking that way, it's just that by looking at other people's models I can tell they are using methods that are obviously much more time-efficient than mine. I've attached an example. Looks almost organic. I would kill to be able to model like that.

humpmetwice, thanks for the tip about the videos, but I've downloaded and watched every video I could find about building cars in SU, some are helpful but for the most part they don't explain how they are doing what they are doing, they just seem to want to amaze people with their abilities. They frustrate more than they help, for the most part.

I do appreciate your input. Somewhat disappointed that out of the many talented and knowledgeable people on this forum no one else seemed to think my question deserved a response. Just wanted a little help.

Thanks again, I'll get it done, one way or another.

    • Which methods to use

I'm about to start work on a 40 Ford model, and I need some advice on how to go about building the fenders. Up to now I have concentrated on learning SU by building cars from the 50's and 60's, much easier to build, but what I really like are the ones from the 30's and 40's, with their beautiful shapes. But this means building a lot of rounded shapes, like the fenders, and I'm not sure how to best go about this. I can get it done and the final result looks ok, but it's a painstaking process and it ends up looking like someone threw-up a bunch of polygons into a fender-shaped mold, no rhyme or reason like some of the models I've seen on the Warehouse, where the polys are minimal, neat and orderly and it looks like someone actually knew what they were doing. With the wealth of plugins available, I need some advice on which ones would best lend themselves to this task, and if possible maybe some suggestions on how to get started. I can't keep wasting my time using my crude methods, so any help would be very much appreciated.

    • Need some help with complex curves

I've run into something that is beyond my meager capabilities. I want to smoothly join the steering wheel column with the speedometer housing like in the photos. It's a lot of angles and curves and whatnot, and my efforts have been less than acceptable. I don't want somebody to do it for me, I just want some advice on how to best get it done right. I can provide more reference photos if needed, and I've attached the model file in case that would help. Any help would be much appreciated.
