The Logo Contest might be kinda fun tho. Since people would know this isn't actually going to be used by Google they could go nuts with it.

But in Google's defense, the icon has been a house since they bought the software.
"Because that's the way it's always been" isn't much of a reason. But hey, what's the point of this thread anyway, Google is going to pay no more attention to anything we come up with than they pay attention to our suggestions for ways to improve their program.

I kind of like that one. Its pleasant. What is so bad about it?
If I knew nothing about SU and looked at that logo, I would assume it's just for making houses and such. There's a lot more to SU than just making houses and furniture. Why shouldn't the logo reflect that?

I picture a promotional video with a rendered animation and walk-through, first looking at the outside of a house then it transforms into a wireframe and the camera flies around it then back to the rendered view, going on to take a look at the car in the driveway, then inside to look at a table, cell phone, vanity, kitchen, etc., each showing a wireframe fly around.
Wow, is Speilberg gonna get on board with this?

RE: Most impressive SketchUp modelling
Hey, thanks Numbthumb, I feel honored to be included in this fantastic collection!
I'm in the process of making some improvements/changes to the car (opening the doors, etc.), getting it ready for the Warehouse. Will post some pics in my WIP thread soon. -
RE: Did this SketchUp Logo come up after SU8?
I for one would like something that shows that SU isn't just for architectural projects.

Nah, just add a Flux Capacitor, why warp speed if you have time travel.
Yeah, I'd go for that, if I could install it in one of my oldies (that dang Delorean is just not my style
)

[ Warp?Sure you didn't mean a real Pratt & Whitney Wasp engine?
Nope, I'm talkin' "We need warp drive now Scotty or we're all dead"

Hmmm, are you talking about a bee? Or plane?
Hmmm....hadn't thought of the bee, now that would be interesting (although with it's undersized wings it might also need a warp engine)

RE: Biplane (not a copy of a real plane)
I'm surprised nobody has suggested tricking it out with few machine guns, missile launchers and maybe some laser cannons and a cloaking device

The bees shouldn't fly neither (because of their shape)... but they do
Actually it's because of their weight/wing size ratio

RE: Biplane (not a copy of a real plane)
I know nothing about rendering, but the model itself looks very nice

RE: Snow-Trac (WIP)
Your attention to detail is fantastic! Looking forward to seeing more of this model.

RE: Mixing hidden and softened edges
Well, I think I might have solved the problem. Not completely there yet, but I think I'll get it there eventually. A little convoluted, but what the hey, it's the end result that counts, right?

RE: Mixing hidden and softened edges
I appreciate your suggestions. Unfortunately, I've tried them all, and it looks no better. Another model bites the dust.
Thanks again. I'm going to bed

Mixing hidden and softened edges
I've got a silly little problem that is giving me ulcers. Building a Vista Bruiser that I used to own about 35 years ago, and to get the look I need for the hood I have to mix some hidden edges and some softened edges. The problem is the "shaded" look this gives me on the front of the hood. Looks fine when looking at it from straight ahead, but at an angle it looks like crap. I've indicated in the third photo which edges I need to have hidden, the others are all softened. Of course I've encountered this before but have always been able to work around it to get the look I want, but this time I just can't seem to work it out. I know that mixing edge types can give you some interesting shaded effects, but that's not what I need here. I've included a photo to show what I'm going for, and I've included the file if you want to look at it close up and personal. Thanks in advance.

RE: Revision control
Please allow me to demonstrate my ignorance --
I apparently don't understand the question. What's the difference between what you guys are saying and just saving copies of your model (with maybe a few words added to the title to help describe why you saved it) whenever you are going to make some changes to it (in addition to the 5 minute autosave feature)? Try as I might I can't figure out the difference.
Of course I'm not a "power user", but then again I might be because I also don't know what defines a "power user"
This is probably one of those questions that's going to embarass me
, but you never know 'till you ask, right?

Your work modeling is faultless
Thanks, but it's far from faultless. At least for me, because I can look at this model right now and see a half dozen things I'd like to change. And might. That's one of the big differences between modeling my usual classic cars and modeling something that exists only in my head - with a classic you pretty much know when it's done, but with a "concept" car it seems it's never really finished. This is my first experience with that, and I'm not sure if I like it or not, can be both interesting and frustrating. And this thing is just one of three designs I came up with, so triple that frustration
I think I'll just stick with my oldies, that's where my real passion lies. There are a lot of modelers making concept cars, but somebody needs to speak for the great cars of the past.
I really need to get around to making that time machine, I really don't care for today's world at all@karinagm said:
"The original contest car" was the base for this model?
Yeah, I got a little carried away. That's why I decided not to enter the contest, too far removed from the original.

The tire after modeling the treads.
I have the greatest admiration for those who did work like this before the wonderful age of Joint Push/Pull
