Integrated Intel graphics haven't had a great track record as far as adequate OpenGL support although that's been more of a problem with Windows than Mac. Apple seems to do a better job of not breaking the drivers that Microsoft. Most Mac users seem to manage OK with Intel graphics.

At this stage, considering your application, SketchUp 2018 Pro would be the way you'd need to go so you might as well dive in.

Thanks. Assuming I can still get a free version, I think I'll just download that and see how it works. If it's OK, I'll switch to Pro. I need Pro for it to be useful for me, but not sure I want to shell out the $$ if there are going to be problems.

I am running Sketchup 2018 Pro on a MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2015), 1.6 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 6000 1536: I have no issues working on it and using numerous extensions and renderers like Ambient Occlusion and Twilight - I use it along with AutoCad for Mac 2019 and have no issues.

      Hey Chuck (or anyone else):

I've been using older versions of ketchup on my older Mac for years, and I just bought a new MacBook Pro today. In looking at downloading SU2018, it warns against using it with an Intel Graphics card. Is that a serious problem, or only a problem with complex 3-D models? I use SU to draw up architectural plans and typical do a 3-D model of the house I'm working on. Nothing crazy like fancy interiors, but exterior elevations in 3-D.

      My computer hardware is:

Processor: 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
      Memory: 16 GB 2400 MHz SSR4
Graphics: Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB

I'll be happy to download some older version if that would be better, and if it's even possible.

      Thanks in advance.

    • Wavy Tape Measure Lines

Sometimes I'll be working on a set of plans and all of a sudden tape measure lines no longer stay true when I zoom in and out. They become wavy by as much as an inch or so, wiggling back and forth as I zoom. Makes it almost impossible draw true lines with any precision.

Anyone else seeing this, or if it's been discussed before, can you refer me to the thread?

      Thanks,

Sorry if I was unclear... When I put in the older license number, I got a message that said I was eligible for the free upgrade because I had purchased a more recent license and they were sending me an email with that license info. But I never got an email.

    • SketchUp won't let me upgrade

I'm a few versions behind, and finally decided to update. I entered my license info and got a message that it was too old, but that there was another license registered to me and the info was sent to my email account. But no email was received. I did check the spam folder, and it wasn't there either.

When I cut and paste the license info from my current version (Mac OSX, SketchUp--> License) it tells me the info is invalid. But I cut and pasted it exactly from the dialog box.

Anyone know why SketchUp does not want me to upgrade to the latest version?

      Thanks!

    • RE: Sketch Model moves in Layout After being updated

I had a bet with myself that this would have something to do with scenes. I don't usually set up a scene, since what I do is mostly floor plans and elevations. I never felt that I needed different scenes, but maybe I do...

Still, it's odd how this only happen some of the time, not all the time. I don't do anything differently.

    • Sketch Model moves in Layout After being updated

This seems to happen about half the time with me and I can't find any rhyme or reason for when it does or does not:

If I change the sketch-up file and then update in Layout, the sketch-up model moves to so random location on the page. And it's a different location every time. If I have any text attached with arrows, those are dragged with the model and I can, with a little care, bring the sketch-up model back to where it's supposed top be relative to all the LayOut stuff on the page. But it's a royal PITA to do this all the time.

I couldn't find a thread on this, and I assume I'm not the only one having trouble with this, so if someone can point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.

      I'm using Version 8 on a Mac.

      Thanks!

    • RE: Colors in SketchUp Don't Transfer to LayOut

      Dave:

OK, that worked. Thanks a million!!

But all I did was create 1 scene. I'm not trying to start a debate or anything, but why do I need to use multiple scenes to go beyond "simple" models and projects. What I'm doing here is just a floor plan for a house. Why would I need different scenes for that?

Sure, I've used "scenes" lots of times when I'm creating 3-D models that I want to show evolving from one design to the next and/or from different angles. But a floor plan? There's only one angle worth viewing that from.

Anyway, I really appreciate your time and help in solving this. I've been scratching my head about this for days.

You should be creating scenes in SketchUp to use as viewports in LayOut. If you select the viewport in LO and look at the SketchUp inspector, does it show scene as [Modified]? If so, you are inducing the problem you're seeing.

Sorry if this sounds basic, but what is a "viewport" and why should I be using them? I've been using LayOut for years without creating scenes in SketchUp. Or rather, I have only the one scene that I'm working on. I just send to LO, and that's it.

      Am I doing something wrong...?

      @unknownuser said:

By clicking on the thumbnail with the circular arrows you've updated the style.

Did that and nothing changed other than the arrows going away. Saved the SU file, updated the reference in LO, and still only dark black lines.

How are you changing the color of the lines to gray? Are you using a style change to do it?

      I'm doing it this way: Window-> Styles-> Edit-> Edge Settings-> Color-> By Material

      @unknownuser said:

If so, are you creating a scene in SketchUp with that style selected? Is that style updated?(Check for circular arrows on the style's thumbnail.)

No, I'm not creating a scene. I'm creating a layer (demo) and have colored all those lines to be light grey.

Not sure how one "updates" a style. There were circular arrows on the thumbnail. When I clicked one of the icons to the right, the arrows went away. But nothing changed.

you can now use the paint bucket on a line or change its color via its model entity window

That's the way I'm doing it. I am not using Scenes.

BTW, I'm on a Mac, if that makes any difference.

I will check out the plug-in you referenced.

Pedro: Sorry, but I don't understand your suggestion. How does one select a SU layer in LayOut? Do you mean open it in SketchUp mode in LayOut?

      Thanks,

    • Colors in SketchUp Don't Transfer to LayOut

I have problems sometimes with fill-in colors transferring to LayOut, but that's not my real problem lately.

The problem I'm interesting in solving is when I color lines in SketchUp. Specifically, I would like to use a very light color to show demo walls on a floor plan so they sort of fade into the background. It's looks fine in SketchUp (I color the lines a very light grey), but everything shows up in LayOut as dark black.

I've fooled around with this for some time and can't seem to figure out how to make it work.

      Any ideas?

BTW, I wouldn't even be doing this if we could simply draw dotted lines in SketchUp. Has that changed yet?

Yes, that did it. I was in raster mode (didn't even know about that).

Both Hybrid and Vector modes fixed that problem. Also fixed another "problem" that had been bothering me, and that is that certain lines wouldn't show up on the screen unless I was in 200x or higher. They would print, so they were there, but you couldn't see them on the screen.

      Thanks!

    • Diagonal lines in SketchUp show up as zig zags in Layout

I'm currently using Version 8 on a Mac, and when I export to Layout, the diagonal lines show up as zig zags, rather than a smooth line. This is noticeable at 100%, and really looks crappy. The same thing is preserved when exporting from Layout to a PDF.

Previously, using V6 on a Windows machine, I would have to scale up to at least 400% before you could start to see the zig zag profile in a diagonal line.

Is there a way to get rid of this? Like I said, it looks really crappy, even at 100% zoom.

I would be embarrassed to submit this type of drawing to a building department for approval. It looks too amateurish.
