Wow. That is fantastic rendering. I feel like I could walk into the picture and open up a cabinet or have a seat on the furniture.

RE: Linux?
You can use WineDoors to install Ubuntu, but it's version 6, not 7. Also, I've found it difficult to get anything in the way of non-stock plugins to work. For me, I find SU in Linux not worth the trouble. That said, you can do a dual boot Ubuntu install and enjoy all the great things that Linux does for for free, and sometimes better than, Windows. Don't let SU/Linux difficulties prevent you from installing Ubuntu and enjoying it anyway.

Thanks for the link, that's actually pretty darn cool. I like the post-it notes idea.

LOL, is that someone's ashes in that Sparc unit?
Every time I see an old computer I think: Remember when that was the most bad**s hardware you could possibly own? It had a whopping 256kb of RAM expandable to 512 and a 3.5" floppy - and a 15" COLOR MONITOR!
Then I laugh at how much these things cost way back when:

Radio Shack TRS β 80 Model II (1979)
Price : $3,450 (32K RAM)
$3,899 (64 K Ram)Would you believe that the same computer price ($3899) adjusted for 1979-2009 CPI would be equivalent to you spending over $7,500.00 for that TRS-80 II today?

Makes me want to go watch that old movie "War Games" with Matthew Broderick again just to see him wreak havoc with that old computer and dial-up modem where you had to put the phone in the modem cradle.

RE: Microsoft's Secret Tablet
Looks like a good idea. I'm no Apple fanboy, I don't even own an Apple product - but - I'm willing to bet that if Apple and MS come out with similar devices, Apple's will be more stable and better thought out than MS's.
Either way, they should be very interesting devices if they ever make it to market.

Too bad it's a fake since it's not DOF but simple blurring the background...
Makes it less funny somehow...But take Pete's post for example!

Now there's something... you can't unsee
AFAICT that shot with the squirrel isn't fake - it's been on the news, along with brief interviews with the photographers (The couple in the background).

RE: Mission Boston - New York
Lived in Beantown for almost 10 years now, and there are certain places we take or suggest to all guests that visit us:
See:
The Freedom Trail - hits a lot of historical sites
The Boston Commons/Botanical Gardens
Boston Museum of Fine Arts
Science Museum
Walk around in Beacon Hill (by the Commons)
Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market
Sam Adams Brewery - tours Th/Fr/Sa, free samples!
Whale Watching tours from Boston's waterfront
Head to the observation deck of the Prudential Building for a view of Boston
Note the park that was formerly the Big DigPlaces to eat:
The Black Rose - Authentic Irish pub near Aquarium "T" stop, not some cheesy tourist trap - live music most evenings.
Mike's Pastry - In Boston's North End (old Italian section of the city), unbelievable desserts, cookies, cakes, etc...
Cafe Vittoria - Same location as above, good espresso and cannoli (next door to Mike's)
Finale or Maggiano's in the Theater District for more "high end" desserts and meals
Union Oyster House - by Faneuil
Legal Seafood
Pho Pasteur - towards Boston's China Town, excellent and inexpensive Thai foodShows - I guess see The Blue Man Group if you haven't already.
Plenty more to see than that, but these are the ones we frequent with guests. Boston's very compact and easy to get around, so all of these can be reached with no difficulty.

RE: Why is this happening?
Start > Control Panel > Display > (Gets you to "display properties") click "Settings" tab at the top. You need to select "32 Bit" in the drop down window that says "Color Quality". Should be halfway down on the right.

LMAO.

RE: Wacom Bamboo Touch
Interesting. The reviewer seems intent on using it as a way to operate a computer as one would an iPhone instead of using it was a drawing surface. Can it be drawn with? A quick web search reveals a completely different looking Bamboo Touch (artists concept?) that has a pen and looks more like a drawing tablet.
EDIT: Nevermind. There is a "Bamboo Tablet" for $79 that is meant for drawing, the "touch" is something different.

RE: Why is this happening?
For some reason I occasionally get that problem too.
The only way I've found around it is to "view hidden geometry". At that point I can usually see hidden edges that were created somehow, delete them, and then re-create the face by redoing an edge somewhere - just draw an edge segment from vertex to vertex on an existing edge. At least, that's been the source of my issues. These hidden edges also cause what should be a single planar face to have mixed front/back faces with no visible edge dividing the two.
I recreated the problem below. I don't know why it's creating the faces that way for you.

RE: Displacement maps from Fog
That's really neat. What software are you using the displacement in?

RE: Scale object question
Scaling about the center works in many situations for simple shapes, but think of creating an "S" shape, if you try to scale from the center for the type of operation I'm thinking of it still doesn't work.
The pic below is sort of what I'm trying to describe. I created an "S" curve, then duplicated and applied "loft". That gave me the original shape. I created a plane and intersected it with the original "S" curve and offset the face, which gave me a copy of the curve that was equidistant from the original. Clean up the edges so that just the curve is left, "weld" it, and duplicate/loft gives the result to the right. The one to the left was a copy scaled about the center, and you can see why it doesn't work. The trouble with the one to the right is that it doesn't maintain the relationship with the endpoints on the green axis (which is what I'm talking about when you scale in reference to something other than global), and this technique doesn't work with a compound curved shape like the bell.

Scale object question
I'm curious if there is a way to do a type of scaling operation in SU.
Currently, the only scaling operations I know of are the ones available by using this function. It does a pretty good job, but I've found more than one occasion where I'd like to scale an object relative to a certain aspect other than x, y, or z axis, say like a central axis and keep the rest of the measurements the same. Let's say you want to make a bell shape (ignore the fact you could lathe/follow me the shape for now), you have the outside made and want to create the inside. Copy the exterior and scale down a little bit, reverse faces, and there you have an interior to use - but when scaled, the surfaces are no longer equidistant, see towards the bottom of the bell in the pic. Is there any way to scale an object relative to something other than global x, y, or z? The bell isn't the best example, but if you had a complex curved surface that needed to be "solid" the ability to do relative scaling would e quite handy.

Bruce Dern: The First Eco-Terrorist

Just kidding. I actually liked that movie quite a bit, you did a great job modeling huey. Now I've got to see if I can find that movie somewhere and watch it again.
