      Remus,

DE is correct on this one.. and its not quite as 'grey' as you might think in terms of photographs of people anyway. If somebody is recognisable in an image and it is to be used for commercial use you must get a model release form and whatnot. πŸ˜„

I think for now i am going to keep photographs of people off the site.

p.s. Remus, i have uploaded several of the models you sent.
      Many thanks.

      DE:

It's a difficult one definitely, and we have already had a share of issues in terms of copyrighted content ending up on the site. The short answer, as with anything user contributed is that its difficult to ever be 100% sure, and we take uploads on good faith that the file is the users work and that the user has the right to grant a public domain / cc license for the work.

So, if its a big public rendering for a high profile client or something then that is where a bit of money spent on 3d models from the many sites that offer them for a fee is probably a good idea. πŸ˜„

Would it be useful to add a contact function so that you can email the model owner through the website, so you can double check this kind of thing should you want to use one of the files in a commercial environment?

      Cheers

honoluludesktop sent me a pm suggesting a Ruby script to allow searching of the site from within Sketchup. I have quickly knocked one up which adds a 'Search cadyou.com' option to the plugins menu, and it is available here:

      http://www.cadyou.com/plugins/cadyou.rb

I will add it to the site for official download soon πŸ˜„

The lowest you dare export them at, so 5 or 6 if they aren't dynamic!

You will find a lot of the models on the site are actually saved down to Sketchup 5, i guess it doesn't matter so much as it does with CAD files though as there is always a free version available..

That's a good idea! there isn't currently a batch uploader however if you would like to make a larger contribution feel free to put the models in one zip file and upload that to the correct category and i will organise it for you.. or you can email them: tom[at]cadyou.com

If you do email any models i would suggest you quickly create an account and put the username in the email so that you get proper credit!

Thanks for the compliments, really appreciated, which ads do you feel are intruding on the content?

    • Ideas and thoughts for Cadyou.

      Hi all,

I have been reluctant to make a post like this because i don't want to be seen as spamming or anything but i genuinely would like everyones input and i can't think of a friendlier place to post!

So, a tiny bit of backstory.. basically i have just graduated from an Architecture degree but have always had a strong interest in programming on various platforms... I thought while i was studying that there was a niche for essentially a moderated version of cben and 3d warehouse, these places are great but me and my fellow course mates all agreed that trauling through the rubbish was a pain, thumbnails were far too small and the search (on cben anyway) was lacking. So i spent three months developing a site from scratch which went online at the start of November as cadyou.

Anyway, the site is doing ok.. we have nearly 300 great files on their now (many contributed by members here after i have hassled them πŸ˜„) but i am wondering what i can do to make it as useful as possible?

You may not have much of a say in 3d warehouse... and cben seems to be basically abandoned nowadays, but i am actively looking for things to add, and to create value and features for the design community...

      Thanks a lot,

      Fair enough!

I still stand by my statement though, this would be great as part of the filesystem... πŸ˜„

This feature... would really be better as part of the Operating System.

Like Windows Vista has for images - not sure about OSX?

    • RE: 3d view feature on the 3d Warehouse

I was looking at doing something similar to this on our site.. There is an opensource flash library called 'Papervision 3D' which has support for collada files.. so in theory you could create a flash widget which would load a collada version of the 3d model and let you zoom and pan around it at will πŸ˜„

Obviously this would only work for smaller models, but that is the focus of our site. Maybe sometime soon! πŸ˜‰

    • RE: Mapping Textures
      1. Import the texture into your library (see Sketchup help)

      2. Ensure that the dimensions are correct under the 'Edit Texture' dialog box. For example if you have a brick texture which has 5 bricks across then the it would likely be set at 750mm (150*5).

      3. Apply the texture to your surface like any other with the paint bucket tool.

      4. Right click on the face and select 'Texture > Position'

      5. Use the four grips to position / rotate and skew your texture.

I haven't used vue but sketchup exports standard UV map information and therefore you should not need to remap in vue.

If you fancy uploading or sending the skp i can run it through maxwell render, i recon it would make a good comparison!

      Cheers Mike,

Sorry for the late reply! That one was a little too high poly for our requirements - we ended up creating one from a 3d man on Google Warehouse with his limb positions altered and a plinth added.

      Howdy all,

I am looking for a statue suitable for a civic context for a current project.. Does anyone have anything that might be suitable? A low poly person on a podium or something along those lines would be great.

I have searched the 3d warehouse but i don't really want a statue of spiderman or boromir from lord of the rings - i don't think the city council would be too impressed πŸ˜„

It should also be noted that simply exporting at a higher resolution than the default will result in the appearance of lines being thinner. Try putting your export resolution up to at least 3000px wide - this is available by clicking 'options' when you do 2d export to JPG.
