To extend the topic, does anyone know how much photorealistic are all theses tools?

I mean is there a way with one of them to know light levels and so verify the IEQ credits 8.x of LEED?

      Thanks
      Serge

If this is what you want, there are packages designed specifically for this... such as Ecotect - i believe it was recently bought by Autodesk?

    • RE: Which Photorealistic Renderer?

I have always used Maxwell, for an unbiased renderer the interface is fairly intuitive and there is a wide library of free (and excellent) materials available. It probably costs a fair bit however, i'm not sure as i am not in charge of licensing at our place!

Solo, i had no idea KT was free.. I just assumed any decent renderer costs money. I will definitely be looking into learning that! πŸ˜„

    • RE: How do you use sketchup for architectural presentations?

We tend to start by using for volume modelling.. however thats kind of over in a few minutes the software is that fast!

It is almost too easy to keep adding detail, so you have to be very aware of what the final image is to be used for and the impression you want to give. Having said that we produce everything from simple white blocks to very complex interior and exterior renderings that are detailed down to the millimeter in some cases.

It has got to the point where you could quite easily produce an entire planning application from one sketchup model.

The 'PurgeAll' ruby is really handy for this, it sits in your top menu and you just get in the habit of hitting it before saving.. It purges components, materials, layers and styles at the same time and works a treat:

    • "Scanr" Sketchup Plugin Release

      [floatr:1h5xtz3e]skan.jpg[/floatr:1h5xtz3e]
We have an exciting announcement to make on Cadyou today. Three months in development alongside the main website we are releasing our first Sketchup Plugin, "Scanr".

This free plugin turns any optical mouse into a small 3d scanner which can be used to directly import physical objects into Sketchup! By accessing the data directly from the optical sensor we are able to use patterns of light and shade to accurately produce 3d geometry simply by slowly moving your mouse around an object.

      all

I was getting dangerously close to my bandwidth limits this month, which is great.. it means the site is growing however it meant sorting out improved file storage. Since my last post i have put a system in place for support of Amazon S3, this means even better speeds both on the website (because other users downloads happen from Amazon's servers and don't bog ours down) and on the downloads themselves as Amazon have datacenters around the world - which you should find are VERY FAST.

At the moment just the most popular files have been transfered, but the rest will be over the next week and any new files will be automatically πŸ˜„

      Cheers!

    • RE: Ideas and thoughts for Cadyou.

      Anyway,

Just to revive this thread before it dies forever. Thanks for everyones input so far, i have done some work on improving the search experience the last few days and wanted to throw up here the list of things i am thinking of adding over the next few months and get some feedback as to whether they are worthwhile or not..

      • Move file storage to Amazon S3 (speed and cost)
      • Bulk upload of files like flickr
      • Community features like top uploaders, most popular user etc
      • The ability to subscribe to a user (RSS) and get notified when they upload
      • The ability to send users messages from their profile page
      • The ability for users to have icons/avatars
      • ...or scrap the three above and use facebook connect/google friend connect
      • More file formats (collada /3ds/ dwg) for every download

Any thoughts on the above features appreciated, i will judge which ones to work on by the response here πŸ˜„

      Cheers.
