Hi Dave Thanks you a lot for taking time explaining this...

I am glad I asked, I now got my head around this way of thinking and tried out cut & pasting Layer0 geometry from (different coloured) group to group and they now automatically take on the respective group's CBL colour without having to change any layer settings... big time saver. Amazing that I have done it wrong for so looooooooooooong!

• RE: Moving nested geometry from Layer0... what's the trick?

Thanks Dave

I have always drawn directly on of following three layers: Existing, Proposed and Demolish... with individual colours associated to them, and then group entities on other layers as required (wall, windows, roof etc....)and never had any issues so far.

This enables me to toggle between Texture view vs. Existing/proposed view, See image below...

However I am interested to learn why it is important to draw everything on Layer0... can you explain?

I am not sure that using Outliner to edit the layer association of groups and their inherent sub group's will make it easier to toggle between the 'Coloured by layer' and Textured material style. I need both styles for my council application drawings.

The way I understand Sketchup's logic is that it adopts the layer colour of the primary entities regardless of the layer colours of the group they are wrapped into... so correct me if I am wrong but a group's layer colours cannot override the layer colours of entities inside the group!?! I guess this would get quiet messy once you have multiple tiers of sub groups.

Hmm, thanks ColorEdge looks like great tool... although it is manual drawing tool (i.e. not automatically generated by the section cut) it will still tie me over for a little while. I have just learned from the guys from Skalp that they are planning to include the projected line feature that I was talking about into their upcoming Skalp release. See image supplied by Skalp.

Thanks for sharing πŸ‘

This Skalp version will go in beta very soon.

• How to create dashed projection lines behind section plane?

Hi there
I use Skalp these days to create section cuts but am still missing a great feature that the old RichSection plugin (which seems to not be supported for SU2016) used to have.

The feature creates dotted or dashed projection lines of elements that are behind or in front of the section plane... is there another way of doing this i.e. sketchup native settings or another plugin? I would like to use this to indicate roof lines over a floor plan...

Thank you

• Moving nested geometry from Layer0... what's the trick?

I have a large library of doors and window components.
I created all basic geometry on layer0, and from there grouped the entities on layers with more descriptive names i.e. window frame, glazing etc...

I have recently started taking advantage of the 'color by layer' feature to distinguish between existing an proposed building components. I would therefore like to select and move all geometry (of my entire library)that is located on layer0 including the entities nested within groups and components to another layer of my choice so that they show up in the correct colour (by layer).

Can this be done?

I usually just delete the layer of the entities(in this case layer0) and then select in the pop-up menu the option "move content to current layer" But as Layer0 generally cannot be deleted... I cannot apply this routine. πŸ˜•

Any help greatly appreciated

Cheers

Hi Pilou & driven

I have found the files now... they were under a different path in the user / roaming section

I never really worked out why there are to storage paths for Sketchup extensions i.e. roaming or within Sketchup... hence my inconsistency with installing every extension in the same place.

Thanks for your patience guys. πŸ‘

Cheers

Thanks Pilou, I double checked that hidden files are shown. Searched the whole system. I am having the same issue with one other program plugin called LumenRT. Can't put my finger on it...

Thanks anyway

Sorry I can't say more than my previous image! (I am on Windoows 8.1)
You have not this ProgramData folder? (Different than user/Appdata/ folder)
and this Plugins folder is also different than the normal Plugins folder!!!
Have you enable Show hidden files in your WIndows system ?

• RE: Visualizer for SketchUp

Hi Pilou & everybody

I am just in the process of upgrading from SU2015 to SU2016 and stumbled across your work around for migrating the now unsupported Visualizer over. Visualizer is working fine on (Win7) SU2015 however I cannot find the folder you have mentioned ImaginationVisualizer nor the ruby file ImaginationVisualizer.rb in my SU2015 file structure.

There is nothing other than a folder called 1.3.13 which I believe was the last and final Version of Visualizer. It is located (Sketchup2015 > Plugins > 1.3.13) and has some further sub folders (Bin/Doc/System)that each have some Visualizer files in them, but no visualizer.rb file to be found anywhere on the system...yet Visualizer works a charm on my SU2015. Tried to copy the 1.3.13 folder into the SU2016 setup but no luck... Is this a Windows 7 thing? 😲

Any help to get it to work appreciated

For SU 2016 (Visualizer yet installed on SU 2015)
Installation don't work directly ! 😲
(I suppose that is working directly if Visualizer don't yet installed!)

A little trick! (For Windows 8.1 - I don't know Mac's world! )
Make this new folder Plugins (don't existing because 2016 is new and empty)
and copy past from the ProgramData / SU 2015:
Folder ImaginationVisualizer and file ImaginationVisualizer.rb
That's all! πŸ€“

You must have that! πŸ˜„

[attachment=1:uwdo1rw4]<!-- ia1 -->Viz2016.jpg<!-- ia1 -->[/attachment:uwdo1rw4]

Works like a charm! 😎 And works in duplication 2015 2016 ! πŸ€“

• Integrated spell checker for Layout 2016 please!

My typical documentation pack for a residential project contains up to 40 A3 Pages these days. More and more specification text required, when you have to check your on work it is so easy to overlook your own spelling mistakes... I would therefor love to see a spell check function inside Layout... most other softwares include this as a basic standard.

I realize there are probably still another 2-3 years of windows 7 support available

Win 7 support runs out in 4.5 years http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/lifecycle

So there is plenty of time to decide what to install next - many things can change in four years...
.

That is very re-assuring... I agree 4 and 1/2 years can be a total game changer in computer years for the better or worse.

I guess it's best to stick to what I got and know best whilst following how the computing world develops. Interesting thought about software (incl.Sketchup)might becoming cloud based which really means that internet would have to be available at all times.
Will also keep an eye on Ubuntu...

Hmm interesting, I am not convinced that Windows will be free...I reckon it is just a maraketing spin... as you say the payment format will simply change. I read this article around privacy of Windows 10 it seems our personal data will be really the new currency that we are going to pay with... does not sit right with me.

Read the headlines here:

• Planning divorce from Windows...worth dating Linux & Ubuntu?

Hi there

I am a Windows 7 & Vista user. After the release of Windows 8 and now Windows 10 it has become very clear to me that I want to file for devorce from Microsoft as soon assupport for Windows 7 runs out.

I realize there are probably still another 2-3 years of windows 7 support available but I would like to plan ahead and see what alternatives are out there. Sketchup compatibilty is top priority for me as this is the software that I am earning my living with.

Problem is that getting back together with the Apple is not an option either, it would be like "jumping out of the fire into the frying pan".

Call me old fashioned but I just don't like the idea of having to re-buy and re-install and re-learn the operating system every couple years and having to put up with changes that I have never asked for in the first place. I am not to keen on the every worsening hidden privacy issues and unwanted data collection side of things either.

Can anybody share their experience with using Sketchup on Linux? Any other worthwhile operating systems out there that I may be overlooking?

Cheers Guys
