One possible way:
- create cpoints for all vertices from the top face (FredoTools)
- drape them with the raytracer plugin (Thomthom)
- Create triangualted mesh (TIGs triangulate points) or with Toposhaper (Fredo6)

Since it's not a general problem, why do you think it will be changed with a maintainance release? Can you produce a short screencast to show the problem?
(I think the new/expanded inference system is a great improvement of SU16, you shouldn't miss it because of small starting problems!)

Newer verions allow to use a double click in the near of a corner to repeat the last rounding...
