this should be easy with draw > sandbox > from contours

are you saying that what was a polyline in autocad appears as individual lines in su? the from contours tool is ok with that as long as the lines are actually connected.

may help if you can post the .skp or at least an image

it's not really a very serious issue. i was just wondering how much i should restrain myself when it comes to new rubies πŸ˜„

excellent detective work jakob! that's exactly what happened.

i imported the model from 3ds. the model was made outside of su in mm units. even though i selected mm for the 3ds importer, the model still arrived 1000 times too small. i knew (but had forgotten) that i should actually select m for the importer. so i scaled it up.

the invalid geometry thing doesn't surprise me...i had been changing the heights of raked walls which i find often causes issues, and had deliberately switched off "check model for problems"

      thanks everyone πŸ˜„

i have to say that i have been away from sketchucation for a while, and it is so great to be back...the atmosphere here is noticeably friendly

      that's interesting because i have SU2POV installed.

thom, i like your idea of being able to load scripts as required. is your script specific to v-ray plugin or can it be generalised?

    • RE: Face won't take a texture

      thanks, remus.

i've stripped out two groups (one good and one bad) from the model. the same texture was applied to one face from each.

i've copied the bad group up Z, exploded and remade...the texture comes right

    • Su slow to open

is it true that the more rubies su has to load, the slower it will be to open?

i'm sure su used to open faster in the past...

    • Face won't take a texture

could have sworn i posted this yesterday....

i have a group which contains a bunch of walls. the group has no material assigned to it. if i open the group and try to apply a texture to any of the wall faces i don't see the texture, just a plain colour. other walls in other parts of the model will take the texture.

if i explode the group and then remake it, the behaviour is back to normal.

i am guessing someone has seen this before?

      thanks for the tips richard!

pilou, have you used that mapzone? it looks amazing for producing custom realistic textures. if i had an extra 3 hours in very day, i might give it a try πŸ˜„

    • RE: File Exporting SU7 Free

I've just used jim's obj_export_1.1 on a small building and the obj imported perfectly into blender...except of course for the scale and orientation. this is with su7 and blender 2.48. strange that it didn't work for you...i know that if your whole model is a group, the export will fail

    • RE: File Exporting SU7 Free

Brian, the script that Remus labelled "Jim's one" is an exporter that I use regularly, so it should work. Did you paste it into the Plug-ins folder in your Sketchup folder? Then close and re-open SU. You should see obj_export in the Plug-ins drop-down list when you open SU.

The importer I haven't tried, but again it should work in the same way.

      Good luck!

Maybe you scripters should set up a donation system (if you haven't already). I don't see why compensation for your efforts shouldn't come directly from the community, rather than from the community via Google.

I suspect that among the SU community, there would be enough users prepared to make a voluntary payment for a script they enjoy. I'm only guessing here...

      andrew
      many reasons i guess
doesn't it represent total freedom from the mainstream
most linux distros are free...you can always have the latest version
development is community driven and not by big business
for reasons i don't fully understand, viruses are not really an issue
really easy to use systems are growing rapidly
a lot of "equivalent" software is becoming available all the time...mostly free
      drivers usually available...good community support
many native windows applications (including SU) can run on emulators or virtual machines
      hey the list goes on

if you want to read more, check out the articles on TechRepublic. here's one for starters
      http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/window-on-windows/?p=11

it's not all a walk in the park...there can be problems
i'm a big fan. but i haven't gone all the way...my computers are xp/linux dual boot.

    • RE: SU update?

Thanks for that Andrew. I can appreciate what you are saying about incremental updates. And clearly folders containing plugins, components, materials, etc are unaffected by updates.

Thanks for the great work...always appreciated.
