      Peter

yeah, that's my take on the topic as well... i don't think i've ever had that jump zoom occur as seen in the video..
possibly one of those problems that just disappears eventually 😄 (or do you see this behavior in all files other than this particular cad import?)

working as expected in another file with PDF, CAD, and JPG imports... so might just be that drawing.
will have to go in there and clean it up and strip it down, maybe copy / paste into another file and see what happens.

fwiw, i've been going on about this for years now.. i've pretty much given up on them ever fixing it so by default when i launch sketchup, i always give it a cmmdW -> cmmdN (close window -> open new window)..

(and that only works if you don't have one of those pesky plugins which alters a new window prior to you doing anything to it.. if you have one of those plugins, you'll have to close the window -> answer the 'would you like to save?' prompt -> open new window)

i see, pretty much what i've noticed after testing a few things.
      frustrating, for sure.
i think i got rid of the plugin i had hanging around that would ask the 'save' question.
      that was annoying as well.

    • Plugin Toolbar Icons Disappear MAC

Customizing my toolbar on a MacBook Pro and each time I close and restart SketchUp I lose my icons.
SketchUp native icons stay put... but I lose 'mirror', 'selection toys', the Fredo tools I have loaded... etc.

      Something I'm doing wrong?
I've tried hitting 'Save current window size' or similar, but that doesn't seem to do anything.

a magic track pad for left hand with the programmable number pad

Where do you get that? Always thought I should get one (left hand number pad) to speed up my work.

      Peter

I'm so tempted to try this... I went out and bought a full size keyboard so I had a numpad (got used to it on my Dell 'mobile' (ha ha ha) workstation. But my one gripe was always taking my hand off the mouse...

      http://www.mobeetechnology.com/images/stories/products_images/Numpad/magicnumpad_02.jpg

Depending which template you use, there are options for programmable keys... which I would set as 'M', 'Option', etc...
I need to read up and see if activating and deactivating is automatic or can maybe set up with a script - I'd want this on in SketchUp and maybe Excel when I'm doing material take offs - but as I've come to love the trackpad on my new toy, I'd want to be able to zoom and pinch and swipe when I was web browsing or doing other tasks.

I used to use the older version of this:

      http://www.belkin.com/images/product/F8GFPC100au/FUL1_F8GFPC100au.jpg

At the time I had 3 profiles setup - AutoCAD, SketchUp, and a CNC visual machine simulator for transferring timber components out of AutoCAD.

For AutoCAD and SketchUp I had the throttle wheel set for fast zoom - this would be for quick in and out of models, mouse wheel was for close in work. I then had move, copy, paste, UCS, undo, redo, etc. etc. programmed to the function keys.

Made cad work very efficient... might have to see if I can get it working on the Mac.

Edson, that's a good point. I made the assumption that BMike was aware of that and keeping the cursor on the geometry. In the case of an imported CAD file with no faces, it would be easy to have the cursor slip off the geometry.

      Thoughts, Mike?

Agreed, but on the PC, when I slip off the geometry the zoom slows to a crawl.
Now that I've switched over to Mac... I get the warp drive zoom.
Something to get used to I guess, especially when zooming with imported CAD lines.

That seems strange. I don't have that problem when zooming with my cheap wireless Logitech mouse on my MBP.

      yeah... weird.
i have a m525 and a programmable m705. the m705 has the ratcheting wheel, which i now find annoying.
(really want a magic track pad for left hand with the programmable number pad... more $$)

that model has imported DWG plans and elevations.
when hovering over a line, it zooms as expected.
as soon as i get off the geometry it goes a bit wonky.

will try it in another model without the imported linework and see what happens.

Don't you (or your mouse erroneously) double click with the MMB by any chance? I used to have weird zooms and jumps until it turned out that my mouse is double clicking.

using the scroll wheel, on a cheap 2 button logitech mouse.
      no clicking required.

for now i pasted in a large rectangle as a ground plane.

Mac Zooming... is this the correct behavior?
It is almost opposite that on my Dell. On the PC, when I would point to empty space, the zoom would slow to a crawl.
On the Mac, it flies all over.

      Enjoy.

It's a little weird at first but after awhile you'll get used to it. Remember. Where you used to use Ctrl, you'll use Option and Command instead of Alt. Shift is still the same. What are you using for a mouse? I bought the most inexpensive Logitech wireless mouse I could find, just plugged in the receiver, put in the battery and started drawing.

      Logitech M705 or something.
Downloaded SketchUp and LayOut but have to transfer my license.

Its familiar and different. Used to teach Photoshop and Illustrator way back in versions... 3? 5?
Had a Powerbook 1400 maxed out in grad school. Tiny screen. Awesome keyboard. Typed lots of papers on that thing. And did lots of Photoshop work.

Carried around an Iomega Zip drive to and from studio. Was modeling in FormZ at the time. Would setup a simple scene and let it render overnight. Those were the days. Had to take the keyboard off to swap out RAM. Back when Apple stock was like $10 share and I thought about taking $3k - $5k of my student loan money and buying in... should have...

I teach several SketchUp classes a year, so I always had to know my way around enough to get everyone's screen looking somewhat the same. The Command and Option button will take a bit to remember. And I don't have a keypad anymore. Hmmm. Hadn't thought of that. Might have to pick up a Bluetooth or USB version for when I'm at home.

I use SU and LO on my MacBook Pro with no problems. The only issue I have is when I go back and forth between the PC and the Mac, the text tends to get screwed up even when I have the same font installed on both machines it displays differently on both. Other than that, though, it is fine.

      Thanks.
Are you able to run the same license so long as you are only running one at a time? I seem to remember reading that you can transfer a Pro license from PC to Mac, but they were separate systems.

Time for a new machine... and I'm down to needing AutoCAD for only 10-20% of my workload, so I plan on moving back to a Mac. My 'mobile' Dell workstation will get wiped with a clean Windows install and then I'll save that for AutoCAD duty.

Looking at a 15" or 17" MacBook Pro, upping the RAM.

Anyone using one with LayOut for CD / Permit / Drawing work (see some of my examples in the Construction Document thread)?

I'm hoping to get a local store to let me load up SketchUp and LayOut and then bring a thumbdrive with a few samples, but wanted to hear first hand if there are any issues...

just tested it and it will come in handy for my timber to steel connections.

i did notice that if bolt 2 components together, it will update all components in the model with the holes, regardless of if those components were part of the bolt assembly. small niggle, and something i can work around, for sure.

      Wow, that's remarkably accurate!

I'm directly above the "T" in Time. In the HDR hole for a little, in the flickr, photoshop world, just past gearfaggotry (though I'm too poor to really enter into that), and I'm currently wishing I could get to the one exposure per motive. It really is accurate.

yeah, my budget (mainly because i spend too much on bicycles and camping gear) keeps me out of the gearfaggotry camp -
although i'm saving my pennies for something a bit more versatile than my wee canon g12.

i do miss my old nikon film slr (and a few lenses) from grad school. not sure where it ended up - parents, brothers place, donation bin... but the immediacy of digital will keep me from digging out a film camera. (and also the lack of wanting to setup a darkroom in my basement - i can still smell the room from the only photo class i took).

i'm interested in the hdr stuff simply to take better architectural photos of projects i work on. i'm trying to keep them from getting overdone, but have a lot to learn.

(i have another version of both with a bit more PP done... that bridge scene would have helped to shoot multiple exposures, but these were done with a 4 year old running around...)

i have tried a few sterogrpahic projections, but the subject matter caused me trouble (on a bridge...).
      here's a good flickr tutorial:

    • RE: LayOut Document References-aka Big Mess

unless you explode the view in layout, any changes you make in sketchup to a particular scene will (and should) change in layout, when you update your references or re-open that drawing.

i wouldn't want it any other way, as this greatly simplifies workflow when making changes.
i often have both SU and LO open, and can tweak and adjust to my hearts content in my model, and then just update the references in LO to see the changes.

if you move geometry, yes, it will move in LO.
if you add geometry, cut planes, etc. - those will also show in LO.
if you add layers, turn them on or off, etc. - that will update in LO.
if you delete scenes, section cuts, layers, etc. - expect your LO file to get wonky.

      my workflow:

      for overall model / building:
client approves schematic design (either via sketchup, 3d pdf, or 11x17 pdfs).
i 'save-as' my model for LO. i name this 'client-project-date-LO'
i set up my section cuts, views, layers, etc.
typically i have anywhere from 10-25 layers and 10-30 scenes.
i've had upwards of 25 section cuts in a model.

      for details:
i usually create a separate SU model for details (like red shows above).
i can do a 'save-as' and reference this (or multiples) alternate drawing into my LO file.
this allows me to delete geometry, scenes, etc., and focus only on the details.
this also allows me not to mess with the overall building / references.
i often do not model the finer details in my main SU file, but only do it in the detail file.

i've linked 3-5 drawings into 1 LO file with good success.
