If you're a shortcut guy yourself, you'll probably use both hand for fast working on Sketchup.

      I know I do...

Use shift while holding middle button and pan away. It's more stable than left click+middle button.

      You read my mind.
I just wanted to say: "Ok, scroll wheel and left mouse in the same time does the job, but it's somehow...unstable..." πŸ˜„

Middle Mouse down + left mouse down

      Thanks.
One needs to press them one after another and not in the same time. Then you hold them both.

This topic encouraged me to make one more shortcut.

So useful, in fact, that "H" without CTRL is much faster to use. Who cares for "H" as pan? That's why you have your mouse for!

How do you pan with your mouse?
What kind of mouse do you use?

With mine I can only zoom in, zoom out and orbit (scroll wheel).

Also, in my case the 'h' keyboard is reserved for "Hide". Here I made an exception - I changed an originally assigned shortcut for a SU native tool - Pan.
By the way, 'Pan' is also useful from time to time.
But I use 'Hide' more often.

      ...............................

One more thing - if you assign a shortcut to some tool that is reserved for Windows commands (Ctrl+P, Ctrl+V, Ctrl+A...), you'll be able to use it untill you restart SketchUp.

    • RE: What's the best way to learn SketchUp Shortcut Keys?

I myself leave native SU tools to the keys assigned. No much reason to change them as they are well chosen: "l" for Line, "e" for Erase etc...
Then I see if there are some free keys left for other commands I use a lot. Of course there are some so I make them shortcuts: "n" - Top View, "x" - X-ray, "g" - Group, "k" - Component...
I do this even when the commands have already more complex shortcuts such are "Ctrl+c". Simply, single key is more convinient for use than combination of keys.

Then when all are occupied I use combinations with "Ctrl" (more often) and "Alt" (very rarelly).
I don't bother to make shortcuts for commands used just occasionaly.
I let the process of work decide what I need.
What I always had on all versions of SU is:

"Ctrl+e" - Explode (funny thing - this is so used command but with no shortcut originally assigned)
"Ctrl+h" - Hide/Unhide the rest of the model (a very useful command - I recommend this to everyone)
      "Ctrl+g" - Hidden Geometry
      "Ctrl+i" - Paste in Place

Eventually if I use some plugin a lot then I just see what key combination is "free" for it.

So, if you ask me about shortcuts I can tell you two things:
      1) Let the process of work decide what you need, and
      2) Stick to some hierarchy.

Who knows, dear pilou, who knows. πŸ˜„

      Maybe the walls of:
      a) a sheik's residence
      b) an art gallery
      c) some expensive hotel or club
      d) etc...

Sometimes we have silly wishes but sometimes we get some extraordinary comission.

      skylabridges,

I hope you'll step by here to tell us your solution once you finish your work. πŸ˜„
It may widen knowledge of some of us.
      It's not everyday that someone prints a high-res 5m-sq art-work.

After all - if you don't find a printer which can print it all at once - maybe you don't need an image editor to merge partial high-res images.

Formula resolution for human eye 76 DPI for 1 meter

      So 5 meters = 15 DPI πŸ˜‰

You may be right, pilou, but skylabridges already explained he doesn't make a poster but a high quality art image.

I can imagine he has some very complex scene in which you do need to stand close to see fine details. For example, just imagine a big image of one part of New York City and you want that cars and people are recognizable enough. I would like to see his model - probably he was working on it like a slave.

I also doubdt he needs 300 dpi but probably he cannot go under 150 dpi, and maybe 200 dpi, which is also very, very fine. Indeed.

Dpi (dots per inch) is a printing term.

skylabridge, if you take JQL's advice about splitting your render into multiple regions, then first try to find out which photo editor can do the job.

High-end medium-format camera manufacturers have cameras which take photos of 60 Mp and even 80 Mp (Hasselblad H4D-60, H5D-60, PhaseOne IQ2 Digital backs etc...). It's still 5-10 less than what you need, but those cameras are used by professionals so why not to contact some of them. I'm sure they join their biiiig RAW photos in order to make some panoramic images so maybe they can give you a word of advice about possible photo editors.

      Security measures, I guess...

This may help you finding plugins in newer (SU-2014 and 2015) versions:
      http://help.sketchup.com/en/article/38583

      Thank you, Gerrit!

This is what I've been searching for.

      There it is:

      SketchUp 2014:
      C:\Users\YOUR USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\SketchUp\SketchUp 2014\SketchUp\Plugins

I don't know why it's there but at least I don't have to start the program in order to meddle with the Plugins folder. Now I can finally make a mess again with no much effort. β˜€

the Sketchucation Plugin has a plugin that adds 'Open Plugins' to its list...

      that should get you plugged...

I may give it a try.

Still that means - opening 'Plugins' from inside the SketchUp while you work on some file?

Oh, since I had TIG suggesting me not to meddle with the Tools folder - I stopped going to the SketchUp folder almost entirely. πŸ˜’

By the way, I can't get in SketchUp 2014 Plugins folder anymore in a normal way used in previous versions - I don't see it being present in the SU folder (even with 'Show hidden files and folders' checked). When I need something (to add a lang file for example or to delete a plugin) I use 'reload' leaf component from 3D Tree Maker as a passage into Plugins. But that's a roundabout. And I have to turn off and restart SketchUp many times if I have to make many corrections.

Before we proclaim it a bug it would be nice to hear someone who has a freshly installed plugin-free SketchUp.
If SketchUp behaves like that even without third-party plugin interfering than I assume it's really some minor mistake in SketchUp itself.

      Nice, bugs, Rich.

In my view, they are not encouraging.
      They are forcing.

If you want to have SU2015 first you have to abandon Windows XP.

And even if that is an encouragement - it doesn't count much if you are short on money. πŸ˜„

      john

Well, since it doesn't move them when you make your first input - I think it wasn't meant to be this way.
And also you cannot rotate an unlocked object with the SU ROTATE tool no matter how much you try. Or you can?

    • RE: Locked groups move?

      Good to know that, Box.
Still it is a great thing: 491x459px, 51 frames and only 101KB!

To stay on the topic. So far it appears that only the MOVE tool is affected with this flaw.
The ROTATE tool functions as it should. You can't cheat ROTATE here.

Just pay attention that Fredo Scale tools don't care much about your locked objects. You can edit them in so many ways: rotate them, scale them, twist them...They remain 'locked' for SketchUp tools after you finish with them with Fredo but nothing will stop Fredo to ignore their 'lock'.

So, if you have a locked object and you are lazy to unlock it before rotating, rotate it with the Fredo Scale plugin.

Thank you slbaumgartner, thank you Box.

I like what it's written about GifCam: "While recording whenever GifCam finds the previous frame is same as the new recorded one it automatically adds delays (milliseconds the frame stays on screen) instead of adding a new frame and increasing gif size."

Slbaumgartner, SketchUp moves unlocked objects on Mac as well?

Now I have no more doubts - it's not the lack of coffee. It's SketchUp behaving that way.

And it shouldn't. Locked things should be staying in place and not moving about.

Box, can you teach me to make those gif animations from SketchUp?

    • Locked groups move?

      Hi guys.

I select some groups and one of them is locked.
I move them by typing some value.
Of course, the unlocked one stays in the place.
Then I change my mind and before the completion of action I type some other value.
All groups move including the locked one.
      Locked groups shouldn't move.

Anyone else has experienced this with SU2014?

P.S. Now I checked this with SU8. The same thing. Is this a punishment cos I still use Windows XP? πŸ˜•
Or I just need another cup of coffee and the things will settle down? 😲
