How have people been getting on with running their sketchup 2021 (or previous versions) on the Mac OS 12 Monterey public betas?

I’d like to purchase one of the new m1x/m2 MacBook Pro’s when they come out and Apple won’t say yet if they’ll be backwards compatible with Big Sur and I’m not going on to the sketchup subscription model so sketchup pro 2021 will be my last version. I’m pretty sure sketchup 2021 wont official support Monterey but it would be good to know unofficially

      Thanks

    • Install a perpetual SU licence on new computer if no m&s

      Hi

I currently have a perpetual sketchup pro 2021 licence with m&s running out this November

I need to get a new MacBook soon to replace my 10 year old one with one of the new 16” m model MacBook Pro once they become available (the m1’s are just a bit small and not powerful enough long term)

Can I activate my perpetual licence on a new computer once my m&s runs out?

      Thanks in advance

    • Running sketchup off external hard drive?

      Hi

Perhaps a bit of a weird question perhaps but my faithful MacBook Pro is starting to run a bit low on storage. It’s still running really well so I don’t want to get a new laptop but I was wondering how viable an option would it be if I bought an external ssd drive and move/run sketchup and perhaps its renderer plugins from it?

How possible is it? Does anyone on here have experience with this?

      Many thanks

    • RE: How will the switch to subscription affect you?

Perhaps I’m being a bit daft but the below quote

“Please be advised: if you purchase a Classic Perpetual License or renew your Maintenance & Support license prior to November 4, 2020, you will not be able to upgrade and access additional features on that license every year as you have in the past.”

So say I got one last perpetual licence m&s in October - would that mean I’m unable to download any of the post nov 4th - 2020 version updates or 2021 version and 2021.1, 2020.2 updates and so forth for that last year of m&s. I’m having trouble deciding the above quote

I’m still using Adobe cs6 on the Mac and Mojave is the last OS X it will work with
I know that sketchup 2020 needs high Sierra or above to work so by that logic sketchup 2021 is last version to work with Mojave so there’d be no point me updating past this next version anyway

I do question how smart this move is from Trimble esp in a post pandemic business world - many people won’t be able to afford subscription - sketchup is no adobe or autodeck

Not quite what I was looking for

The sketchup icon is that red cube - this poster had managed to change the colour of the icon different colours so sketchup 19 had a blue desktop icon, 18 a purple icon and so on and so forth

Thank you for taking the time with your suggestion though

    • Changing desktop icon colour

      Hi

Probably like a lot of you I have a lot of versions of sketchup pro on my computer where it’s individual serial/licence details means they all still work

A few days ago I came across an old post where something (using a Mac I think) has changed the colour of each of his desktop sketchup icons so he could easily tell the difference

I’d love to do this colour coding myself but for the life of me can’t find this post again

      Can anyone help

      Thanks

    • RE: Classic/perpetual licence option ending this year!

      I remember those quotes

At the time I was thinking we had at least another 3-5 before subscription only

Trimble has been a relatively good software company to us users over the years - I like to take them on their word

I’m only relaying what I’ve been told by a respectable retailer - it’s better to pre warn on something that never comes about then say nothing and it catches people by surprise with no time to plan/budget

    • RE: Classic/perpetual licence option ending this year!

I’ve had another email from my retailer

Trimble is looking to end the Classic Perpetual License model later this year

The date is not known but subscription is becoming the norm at some point this year

I imagine that sketchup would have to honour any existing m&s plans (in fact where do you buy a 3 m&s top up as that’s probably the best future proof for us classic users)

Sound like it’s happening - so those of us who are classic not intending/can’t afford to go subscription should start covering ourselves now

Tried to get more from my sketchup provider but he wasn’t giving anything else away

I guess he had already said too much (by saying the classic licence is ceasing to exist later this year/2020)

If it does happen in 2020 it would be a bit of a crappie move eliminating the perpetual option imo

    • Classic/perpetual licence option ending this year!

      Hi

I’ve just had an email from my sketchup retailer reminding me that I need to renew my classic licence 1yr support & maintenance. He mentioned that the classic/perpetual licence option was ending later this year.

I’ve emailed back to ask for more info but if so this is quicker than either adobe or autodesk going fully subscription?! and for me a disappointing move from Trimble

      Anyone know anymore about this?

    • SU Freelancer/Employee q - what do you charge/get paid?

I know that this question has been asked many times over years but looking through old threads it seems to have asked last a while back and things change over time as you know.

Basically how much do you charge (if you are freelance)/get paid (if youre employed) for your work using sketchup?

Obviously I imagine you use not just sketchup in your work but programs like cad, photoshop, 3D renderers, etc...

      Could you list:

if you are a freelancer or work for a company
if you charge/get paid per hour or per project
how much you charge or get paid
years experience you have with sketchup
      country where you are based
other software you use alongside sketchup
example of a past project, time taken to complete, what you got paid.

When doing my own research freelancers seem to be charging anywhere from £5 to £100 per hour of a job involving sketchup and job positions advertised seems to be just as varied.

One of the problems seems to be that in countries where living costs are much less they can afford to undercut those with higher living costs in other countries. Where I’m located in the uk living costs are high but everyone expects value for money so I have no clue what I should be looking to charge that is both economic and fair.

Also what software are the freelancers using? - if for example you have and maintain a licence for sketchup, photoshop, autocad, 3d max and a high end renderer (about £7k subscription fees a year) but charge £15 an hour for an average 30 hours a week (approx £22.5k a year) surely you can’t afford to use the industry standard software making yourself a harder sell?

Sorry about all the questions - not to go through all my personal circumstances in public but it’s really hard to get advice in this sort of question and I have the added hurdle of having a disability and people trying to short change you once they know as you are ‘worth less’

I’m happy to discuss/get answers via pm if you rather not post a public answer

      Many thanks all

    • Sketchup pro alternatives

For the record I have no current plans to jump off the sketchup pro ship just yet.

I’ve used sketchup since the google sketchup 6 version in uni and have invested a lot of money and time in the product. I feel I owe it to sketchup to carry on investing in the perpetual license for the time being and see how sketchup plan to go forward in the next year or 2 before making any long term decisions on how I’m personally going to go forward.

However it can’t be denied that some may start looking elsewhere for their sketchup type needs. Some may be priced out if sketchup goes 100% subscription and others on various forums feel that sketchup has stuttered in its progression and features over the last few years and risk being lagging behind other 3D modelling.

So what other programs are the rest of you looking into/keeping an eye on to fulfill 3d modelling needs if decided in the future that sketchup no longer cuts it.

Software that I know of that could fill the sketchup void include:

      • blender

      • form z

      • rhino

      • autodesk formit

      • bricscad

Do the rest of you have other software your keeping an eye on or thinking of switching onto, or any options on the software mentioned above

    • RE: SketchUp 2019 release

      I am saddened by this.

I’ve been using sketchup for about 14 years and it was the modelling software for everyone. To the extent that it took a while for some to take it seriously as a professional design tool.

Adobe and auto desk, etc were expensive to start off with so a subscription license was understandable to an extent.

However this decision really alienates the freelancers and small businesses who can’t afford to go subscription, who over the years helped sketch up to grow and become the widely used tool it is today.

I’m still waiting to hear more info on classic and a comparison of that and pro and studio. But right now I’m not a happy bunny (excuse the term)

    • RE: SketchUp 2019 release

      So I’m confused

Does that mean that sketch up has gone the adobe/AutoCAD subscription

I need to read the sketchup site but I guess that means if you get a 1 year m&s you don’t get to keep version 2019 (or other) once it runs out?

That really sucks if that is the case

    • RE: Advice needed - building on location

Thanks for all the advice so far

Can you guys expand on the photo match theory a bit more
All the examples I’m finding online is using the photo match to make the building itself from the photo
I’m having trouble finding examples of photomatch being used to position a already modelled sketchup house in the correct position on the photo before rendering on vray (or another render engine) and then post processing on photoshop to blend it into the photo

The nearest relevant example I can find so far is this one
      https://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=81&t=19245
I’m still trying figuring out the full photomatch process in this case

I understand why people try to avoid this ‘photoblend’ method of photo realistic rendering (and prefer close up renders) as it is so difficult. Probably why I’m finding so few examples online

This is one of best examples I found of it being done well but these people are experts. As a beginner there’s only so well I’m going to be able to do
      https://www.the-boundary.com/studio/services/cgis

The lack of in depth tutorials of any of this online or books (that I know of) doesn’t help

    • Advice needed - building on location

      Hi

I’m currently self teaching myself the sketchup vray plugin and post processing methods in general.

I’m working on a project where the brief is to model a 3d house from provided plans and elevations and create a photo realistic concept render set within its site and surrounding built environment.(neighbouring houses, etc)

(I’m having a bit of trouble explaining so bear with me)

The site is located in a already established suburban locations - lots of houses.

Obviously I need to start by modelling the house in sketchup.

However I don’t know what direction is the norm for the post processing and rendering stage when introducing the surrounding environment

When searching online I noticed that large concept design renders (such as offices, museums) all the surrounding buildings and environment seems to be modelled then rendered fully with very little added from photos in post processing on photoshop

Individual house models use a variety of techniques from a full rendered background to using a background photo in sketchup to using a clay model in photoshop and adding building materials on top

I just don’t know what method to use in this project and I can’t find any good examples on

As it isn’t a big project it seems a bit extreme to model the surrounding houses (and site) to high detail as well
However I don’t know if using a site photo and ‘blending in’ the house method so it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb is right either.

I’m having real trouble explaining as you can tell

Would any of the experienced renderers on sketchucation be able to advise me either via this thread or private message (I’ll be able to provide an example image via message)

      Many thanks in advance
