life is different for him now than it was when he originally wrote the plugins?

I haven't seen him being active for a long time. It's something that often happen to freeware developers - as they usually spend their little extra time for these types of projects.

I suggested this to you before. Maybe if you offer to pay him for some of his time, he'd fix up the plugins you want. He's probably got things going on that are more important than fixing up some old Ruby scripts.
-
Or he could share unscrambled versions of his plugins so that other authors can fix them. (It's usually minor issues easily fixed)

all of the ones I use aren't scrambled, they're binary...
you can convert and edit them, but only for yourself without the authors consent...

Oh ok. I looked only at UCS Manager, Compo Spray, and Layer Manager. These three are scrambled.

This is my current list of plugins that don't work in 2014. Obviously, the list is limited to what I've been using, so it's by no means comprehensive.
-
And most if not all of that list simply means you haven't installed the newest versions that work with 2014.

Moving files over from an earlier version is a recipe for errors...
If you get the latest versions of Plugins [from the PluginStore/EWH], then most of the ones you list should be v2014 friendly.
For example Fredo's tools are all compliant as far as I know, so the far superior RoundCorner would replace the ancient BZRoundEdge ?
Fredo's ToolsOnSurface covers many of the others you listed, as does his newer JointPushPull...
I also know that TT's Cleanup is also made v2014 compliant.
Remember also to get the latest Lib's for TT & Fredo's tools...
Shapes.rb was also updated by the su_ team and is available from the EWH.
The only one which I don't know of regarding v2014 compatibility/updates is CADspan's
