Hook Model will not form a solid. SI says OK
-
This hook model will not form a solid, but Solid Inspector shows no problem.
Could someone please tell me what's wrong?
-
OK, I opened the file, made a group and have 14.421 cu/in. Looks solid to me.
Not sure what the problem is on your end.

In v8... Select all by treble-click [2968 entities], then Group, then Entity Info says 'Solid Group' - so it is 'solid' ?
Solid Inspector won't find anything wrong as there is nothing to find ?
There are several very small facets near the hook's tip - I expect you modeled larger and scaled down ? BUT these don't seem to mess with it being 'solid'
If you Select the hook 'by fence' you get 2969 entities, which when grouped is not a solid-group .
I suspected there was a small piece of something inside it.
Select the 2968 entities and group as a solid - move it to the side.
Select in the seemingly empty space where it used to be and you get Entity Info showing 1 Group. It's so small you can't see the thing! Using Outliner to open [edit] the already selected group reveals 1 edge only 0.002" long.
Erasing the edge OR the group makes only 2968 entities that are then group-able into a solid...
So that stray bit was what was messing you up IF you grouped everything including the tiny stray group - where'd it come from -
Yep, I just triple clicked and made it into a Group, Entity Info reports solid. I attached the grouped model if you want it...

Same here although I made a component. Entity Info calls it "solid".

I can confirm Ken's detective work. It's solid

See my edited post http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?p=354251#p354251 - there's a tiny stray group inside the hook's raw geometry, it contains a single line 0.002" long - and depending on how you select 'everything' it can be added to the new group and then it's not a 'solid' any more!
-
I triple clicked on a face on the outside which must have omitted the little group inside. Interesting thought about how you go about selecting all the stuff you want included as part of a component or group.

I'm puzzled why SI can't find any errors when SU says it is not a solid...

I'm puzzled why SI can't find any errors when SU says it is not a solid...Thanks all for the fast and insightful replies.
Well just before I read all this, I copied the surface to the clipboard, brought it back and made a comp of it and it was a solid. So problem solved. Now, TIG, I thought SU needed 2 or more entities to make a group/comp, regardless of size.
And TT, I had this exact same problem a while ago, with a merged group inside my SI clean solid. But in that case I saw the extra group and ignored it. In this case SU did not even show me that spurious group, or I would have deleted it right then.
Being in the hook tip makes sense as I modified it to remove some very tiny entities caused when I did a taper, but how a group formed is a mystery.
Mind you SU has been acting strange today.... Bugsplat deleting a circle (lucky just after a manual save, nothing lost), move/copies just vanish, I assigned a layer to a part and everything on that layer vanished (UNDO got it back), sometimes my CTRL or arrow keys need a hard hit or 2, Panning sometimes loses orientation after the arrow key was pressed.....
Let me tell you UNDO has been my best friend today.

I just discovered how that errant group may have formed within my hook tip.
Curviloft; when it fails to form a surface, even though it shows a black pre-form surface, still generates an empty, or perhaps an almost empty group that SU interprets to be as a non solid. SI will correctly say it finds no errors, but SU will not see it as a solid.
The only way out, is if you know you do have a valid solid after a Curviloft fail, but SU says not, then edit the solid and do a sweeping left select to select everything. Using TT's selection tools, select only groups, and there it is. Just hit the <delete> key to get rid of it. You cannot select just that empty group. If you have other valid groups in that selection, then deselect them first.
I'm posting an edited version of this in the Curviloft thread.
