Can you elaborate on what a sewing template plugin would do?
I have no idea of what that would involve... πŸ˜•

I'd like an 'Acme Widget Discombobulator Figurator' but I'm not telling you anything more about it - just go and make it [now] ! πŸ˜’

I am sure someone will be able to help you... but please give them a little help - perhaps post some links or images etc of what you are looking for - a brief outline of your requirements is vital...

I think he means a Ruby that will divide a mesh into pieces, lay them flat to make a pattern for sewing.
you'd have to have it add material round all edges to make the seam - being exact to the edge of the cut won't work.. no material to sew.

the papercraft rubies would be close (but since they don't add the needed seam material, won't be of use for this)

                Would an offset be enough?

There is a tool to add 'glue' tabs to flattened forms...
                  https://github.com/rschenk/Sketchup-Glue-Tab-Plugin
                  This might do ?

This request sounds like a stitch up to me 😎

StitchUp, pro-version comes with SewOut and Pattern Maker... πŸ˜†

Sorry, I have not the slightest clue neither about sewing nor programming, but to me it looks like if someone would get this progammed for SU, he already went half way to make a UV unwrap tool. I remember one unwrap function in 3DS Max is called pelt mapping. Isn't it kind of the same thing how sewing patterns are basically working? It could be done with a papercraft application that can edit the seams ( http://www.tamasoft.co.jp/pepakura-en/ ) but I believe it is far too complex to edit every single triangle.
It should have some intelligent presets that work out the curves and control the tension of the material like that new plugin for creating textile sructures.

                        just some thoughts...

On an aside - here's an extreme use of paper-tabs etc... http://testroete.com/index.php?location=head

Omg, without knowing you did me a great favor - I was looking for this artist all over but could not find anywhere.
                            Thanks mate!
(I helped a friend to start this project: http://www.marteria.com/index_frame.php - sure it is just a copy... customer saw Eric Testroete's work somewhere and wanted it badly.)

back to topic: I assume there must be a huge market for software to make patterns for sewing...

                              http://www.berninamylabel.com/
                              http://www.fashioncad.net/index.html
                              http://www.wildginger.com/

I bet there is a ton of standard methods you have to know before understanding the process of "fashion skinning".

Early today, Pilou posted a link to this site:

It isn't free, but has a 30 day trial. I couldn't find the price and I have no use for it, but if I sewed, it would be worth a serious look.
