3ds/obj import into SU 2015
-
All, I have a file the is a native 3ds/obj that I would like to import into sketchup. It is a large file and it has 219 JPEG textures that use uv mapping. I can get the geometry to import correctly, but the materials are not coming in correctly. They are misaligned. Does anyone have experience with 3ds imports and how to resolve the texture mapping issues?

triangulate the file before importing if you can.
-
I believe it is all triangulated after importing. Are you saying I should open in max and triangulate first?
-
yes, if you let SU do it it can cause probs in some instances.
-
I'll give that a shot, thanks

It appears the file is already an editable mesh, unless I'm missing something. Would love it if anyone could take a look to see if I'm missing something. Use the link below to download the .obj and corresponding texture maps.

That's a hefty file you're looking to import.
regardless, the obj file was missing the textures so i can't tell if i get the issue or not?
i imported into SU alright. ~170mb in size

another thing is the number of verts floating at the same location.
removing doubles kill 3 millions vertices for the buildings.
-
sorry it was 365k of vertices killed for the buildings...

this will take time to load but it shows the .skp without the textures

Thanks for checking it out. The textures need to be extracted in the same folder as the obj, and then they come in. I got the model in just fine, like how you show. I've tried multiple file formats now, and still have the same problems with textures misaligned. I know it works fine in 3ds max, so I'm puzzled why it's not working for SU.

sorry, i missed the separate texture download.
i'll give it another go and see what i get.

FYI, I got it sorted out. I think it has something to do with the z and y axis being flipped. My solution, was to download a trial of Atlantis, imported the obj with textures, then exported it again as an obj to a different folder. Then imported the obj using sim lab into sketchup and it worked like a charm. Hefty file indeed, it is the city of Seattle after all. Thanks for your help.
